A website is a group of related web pages and other resources—such as images or documents—made available together, typically under one domain name. A web page is an individual document shown in a browser; a website may contain many pages, or work as a single-page app that updates its visible content without loading a traditional new page.
What is a website?
A website is a collection of linked web pages and associated resources that browsers can retrieve from a web server. The pages and resources are generally grouped under a shared domain name, such as example.com. A site may contain articles, images, videos, downloadable files, interactive features, or a mix of these.
A web page is one document displayed by a browser, generally an HTML document. In everyday use, people may say “website” when they mean one particular page, but the terms describe different levels: the page is one document; the website is the larger collection of related resources.
That distinction has a modern wrinkle. A single-page app can change what appears on screen as a user interacts, without the browser loading a separate page in the traditional way. So a website does not have to present every view as a separate document or require a full page reload for each change.

What is the difference between the Internet and the Web?
The Internet is the underlying network that connects computers and other devices. The World Wide Web, or Web, is a system of interconnected web pages and resources accessed over that network. The Web uses the Internet, but the two terms are not interchangeable: the Web is one of the services that runs on the Internet.
What are the types of websites?
Website types are practical labels based on what a site is mainly for, not a formal or exhaustive standards taxonomy. Many sites combine purposes—for example, a business website might publish articles, display a product catalog, and provide account tools.

These categories can overlap. A portfolio may include a blog, a store may offer account features, and a web application may also contain informational pages.
What are the main components of a website?
A website works through several connected parts: a browser requests resources, a server responds, and web technologies help the browser render and operate the result.

- Browser or client: Software on a user’s device that requests website resources and displays them.
- Web server and hosting: The server stores or serves a site’s files and sends requested resources to browsers. Hosting is the service or infrastructure that makes those files available.
- Domain name and URL: A domain is the readable name used in a web address. A URL identifies a particular resource and can include a protocol such as HTTPS, a domain, and a path to a page or file.
- DNS: The Domain Name System helps resolve a domain name to an IP address so the browser can contact the relevant server.
- HTTP and HTTPS: These are protocols used for communication between clients and servers. HTTPS protects data in transit between the browser and the site.
- HTML: Defines the structure and content of a page.
- CSS: Controls presentation, including layout and appearance.
- JavaScript: Adds interactive behavior, such as responding to user actions or updating content.
- Assets: Images, video, audio, PDFs, and other files a site uses or makes available.
- Links and navigation: Connect pages and resources and give visitors ways to move through a site.
What happens when you open a website?
At a high level, opening a website involves locating the server, requesting resources, and displaying them in the browser. The exact process can involve additional systems, but this simplified sequence shows how the main components fit together.
- You enter a URL or follow a link. The browser identifies the requested web address, including the domain and, where specified, a path to a resource.
- DNS helps locate the server. The browser uses the domain name to find the IP address associated with the relevant server.
- The browser sends a request. It communicates with the server using HTTP or HTTPS to request the page or other resources.
- The server returns resources. Depending on the site, the response can include HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and assets such as images.
- The browser renders the page. It interprets the returned resources to display the content and, where applicable, enable styling and interactive behavior.
This is a simplified account. Caching, content delivery networks, application servers, and other infrastructure can also participate in loading a real website.

How the formal definition of a web page differs
For the specific purpose of understanding WCAG 2.2 conformance, the W3C defines a web page as “a non-embedded resource obtained from a single URI using HTTP plus any other resources that are used in the rendering or intended to be rendered together with it by a user agent”. This is a standards-context definition of a web page, not a replacement for the everyday explanation of a website as a collection of related pages and resources.
