An operating system (OS) is system software that manages a device’s hardware and provides the services and interfaces applications need to run. It coordinates programs, memory, files, storage, connected devices, and networking so apps can use the device without each one having to control its hardware directly.

How an operating system works

An OS sits between applications and a device’s hardware. When an app needs to read a file, use memory, display something on screen, or send data over a network, it generally asks the OS for that service rather than managing the hardware itself. The OS coordinates the request and shares resources among the programs using the device.

The kernel is the central part of an OS: it provides core services and manages access to resources. In everyday use, however, “operating system” can mean more than the kernel. It may also include system programs and user-facing components that make the device usable. OpenStax explains this relationship in its operating system overview.

What does an operating system do?

Most of an OS’s work is coordination: it decides how programs share limited hardware resources and gives them consistent ways to use common services.

Manages programs and CPU time

A program is a set of instructions; a process is an instance of a program that is running. The OS starts and schedules processes, switches the CPU among them, and helps keep one process from interfering with another. A thread is an execution path within a process. This scheduling is why a device can appear to perform multiple tasks at once, even when those tasks must share CPU time.

Allocates memory

The OS tracks memory use and allocates memory to processes. It also provides virtual address spaces, which give programs an organized view of memory without requiring each one to manage the physical memory directly.

Organizes files and storage

The OS provides file and storage services, allowing applications and users to work with named files and folders instead of handling the underlying storage hardware themselves. It coordinates access to storage so programs can read and write data through common system interfaces.

Coordinates devices and input/output

Keyboards, printers, disks, screens, and network hardware all communicate with software in different ways. The OS coordinates input and output (I/O), often using device drivers and other system mechanisms to let applications work with those devices through consistent interfaces.

Provides networking services

Operating systems provide services applications can use to communicate over networks. For example, a program can use a socket interface to send or receive data without directly controlling the network hardware.

Enforces protections between programs and users

Operating systems use process separation and privilege levels to limit access and reduce interference. These protections are an important part of security, but they do not guarantee that a device is safe from malware, vulnerabilities, or unsafe user actions.

Examples of operating systems

Common desktop and laptop operating systems include Windows, macOS, and Linux. On phones and tablets, common examples include iOS and Android. The device matters: operating systems are designed for different hardware and ways of interacting, so a mobile OS is not simply a desktop OS with a smaller screen.

What are the types of operating systems?

“Types of OS” can refer to more than one classification. A device-oriented category describes where an OS is used; an operating approach describes how it serves users or handles work; kernel architecture describes how its internal components are organized. These are different lenses, not one mutually exclusive list.

By device or use

  • Desktop and laptop systems: Windows, macOS, and Linux are examples used on personal computers.
  • Mobile systems: iOS and Android are examples used on phones and tablets.

By operating approach

Batch and network operating systems are examples of categories based on how an OS handles work or supports connected systems. This classification answers a different question from whether the OS is mobile or desktop.

By kernel architecture

Monolithic, layered, and microkernel designs describe ways of organizing OS components. They involve trade-offs: keeping more services close together can make communication efficient, while more modular boundaries can improve separation and organization but add communication overhead. A commercial OS may combine ideas, so it is misleading to assume every product fits neatly into one simple label.

How to recognize an operating-system problem

Because the OS coordinates many parts of a device, symptoms such as an app failing to open, a peripheral not being recognized, or files becoming inaccessible can have several possible causes. The OS may be involved, but the symptom alone does not prove that the OS is at fault.

  • Check whether the issue affects one app or multiple apps. A problem limited to one app may be specific to that application.
  • Check whether a connected device is recognized and whether its connection is secure. A cable, peripheral, or driver issue can resemble an OS problem.
  • Note whether the problem began after a change, such as installing an app or connecting hardware. This can help narrow down what changed without assuming a cause.
  • Look for an error message and record when the issue occurs. Specific details are more useful for troubleshooting than a general report that the device is “slow” or “broken.”

Why the operating system matters to applications

The OS gives applications a shared way to request services from hardware and other system resources. Without that layer, every application would need to handle many hardware details on its own. By coordinating access and isolating processes, the OS lets multiple programs use one device while reducing the risk that they interfere with one another.
