To find an earlier Claude Code conversation, run claude --resume (or claude -r) and choose a session in the picker. You can also give it a session ID or name. To reopen the most recent conversation in the current directory, use claude --continue (or claude -c). These commands find and reopen sessions; Anthropic’s current CLI reference does not document a built-in command for searching the words inside old messages.
Choose the right way to find a conversation

Start in the relevant project directory when using the picker or choosing the latest conversation. The Claude Code CLI reference documents both session selection and resumption.
Resume a specific session

Open a terminal in the relevant project directory.

claude --resumeor its shorter form,claude -r, to open the session picker. -
Select the conversation you want to reopen. If you know its session ID or name, pass it instead:

The current CLI reference says ID lookup checks the current project and its Git worktrees, then searches other projects on the machine. The picker and name search also include sessions that added the current directory with /add-dir. This lookup scope is version-sensitive: before Claude Code v2.1.223, ID lookup was limited to the current project and its Git worktrees.
Continue the latest conversation in this directory
Run claude --continue or claude -c when you want to resume the most recent conversation in the current directory rather than select a particular session.

There are session-type exceptions. In standard interactive use, --continue skips sessions started with claude -p, sessions created with the Agent SDK, and sessions whose first prompt was /loop. The CLI reference says claude -p --continue includes print-mode, SDK, and /loop sessions. Handling of finished background sessions also depends on the CLI version, so check the reference for the behavior applicable to your installation.
Find a phrase inside old messages
Resuming a session and searching its message text are different tasks. The documented commands above select conversations by session, name, or transcript path. Anthropic’s current CLI reference does not establish a built-in full-text search command for phrases in old messages, nor does it establish a default transcript directory. That means there is no supported file-search command or transcript path to give here; do not assume the session picker searches message contents.

Check your Claude Code version if a session is missing
Run claude --version to see which version is installed. The Claude Code getting-started guide documents this version check. Version matters because the CLI reference identifies v2.1.223 as the point after which session ID lookup expanded beyond the current project and its Git worktrees. If you need to find a phrase rather than reopen a session, the sources cited here do not establish a supported message-search method or storage location.
