For storage you can keep attached while playing, a microSD card is the clearest supported option for both devices: Valve documents microSD expansion on all Steam Deck models, and ASUS specifies a UHS-II microSD slot on the 2023 ROG Ally. An external SSD is more suited to a docked or desk setup, but compatibility and setup depend on the device and operating system. Available official information does not establish that an external SSD loads games faster than a microSD card.
Which should you choose?
- Choose microSD for portable expansion. It fits the built-in card slot, so you do not need to carry or connect a separate drive during play. Valve documents expansion by microSD across Steam Deck models, while ASUS lists a dedicated UHS-II slot for the 2023 ROG Ally. Valve’s Steam Deck hardware page and ASUS’s 2023 ROG Ally specifications describe those supported paths.
- Consider an external SSD for a stationary setup. It may suit a handheld connected to a dock or hub, but you will need to confirm that your device’s operating system and game-library setup support the drive in the way you intend. Steam Deck documentation covers USB-C docks, hubs and peripherals; it does not establish a universal game-library workflow for both handhelds.
- Do not choose based on an assumed loading-time advantage. The official material available here does not provide a controlled, like-for-like game-loading comparison between microSD and external SSD storage.
What is officially supported on each handheld?
Steam Deck
Valve says all Steam Deck models support storage expansion through microSD. The built-in storage options include eMMC or NVMe SSD configurations, so a card can add space without replacing the internal drive. Model availability can change by market and over time; consult Valve’s current hardware page for the model you are considering.
For a docked setup, Steam Support’s docking guidance describes using USB-C docks or hubs for displays, networking, USB peripherals and power. This supports the general idea of connecting USB devices through a dock, but it does not guarantee that every drive, enclosure, file system or game-library configuration will work as desired.
ROG Ally
ASUS’s product page for the 2023 ROG Ally specifies a UHS-II microSD slot. That is a model-specific specification; do not assume it applies to a later ROG Ally model without checking that model’s official page.

The official information cited here does not detail a shared external-SSD game-library workflow for ROG Ally and Steam Deck. Check the instructions and settings for your particular device and operating system before relying on an external drive for installed games.

Does an external SSD load games faster?
The official specifications identify interfaces and supported expansion options, not real-world game load times. The available material does not include a controlled test that runs the same games on the same handheld from a microSD card and an external SSD under comparable conditions. It therefore cannot support a claim that one option is faster by a particular number of seconds or percentage.

When comparing independent tests, look for results from the same device, games, settings and storage setup. Interface labels or theoretical transfer rates alone do not tell you how a particular game will load.

What to check before choosing a card or drive
- Confirm the exact handheld model. The ASUS UHS-II detail cited here is for the 2023 ROG Ally; specifications for other models may differ.
- Check capacity and compatibility on the manufacturer’s current page. Do not assume every card or drive is supported simply because it connects physically. A Lexar compatibility list dated in its filename 2026 Q1 includes Steam Deck and ROG Ally in its gaming-device listing. This is the manufacturer’s compatibility information, not an independent performance test.
- For an external SSD, verify the complete setup. Check the operating system, connection or hub, drive format, and whether your game launcher can use the intended location. Steam’s dock guidance establishes USB-C hub and peripheral use for Deck, not universal support for all storage combinations.
- For Steam Deck formatting details, consult Valve directly. The Steam Deck FAQ addresses microSD file-system format, but the information cited here does not establish every current formatting step.
