To prepare your business for AI, build the ability to identify useful problems, test suitable tools, develop staff skills, and manage risks as the technology changes. No single product can future-proof a company. The more durable investment is an organization that can evaluate AI against real work, learn from evidence, and adapt its processes responsibly.
What does future-proofing with AI mean?
Future-proofing does not mean predicting which model or vendor will dominate, or buying a tool that promises to solve every problem. It means developing the business capabilities to make good AI decisions repeatedly: find work where AI might help, determine whether the organization is ready, run a bounded test, assess results, and decide whether to change, expand, or stop the use.
This distinction matters because AI capabilities and products change, while the underlying business needs—such as serving customers, processing information, or supporting employees—are more stable. A company that starts with a clearly defined need and can reassess its approach is less dependent on any one tool.
Where should a business start?
Define the business problem before choosing a tool
Start with a specific task, the people affected, and the outcome the business wants to improve. “Use AI” is not an implementation plan. A more useful starting point is a question such as whether a defined process could be made faster, more consistent, or easier for employees without weakening accuracy, service, or control.

The OECD/BCG/INSEAD report The Adoption of Artificial Intelligence in Firms: New Evidence for Policymaking, published 2 May 2025, describes technology extension services that help firms scope problems and develop proofs of concept. That is a useful pattern for businesses too: clarify the job, then test whether AI is a reasonable way to address it.
Choose work that can be evaluated
Before a pilot, decide what evidence would count as success and what would make you stop. Depending on the task, measures might include time spent, error rates, completion quality, employee effort, or customer outcomes. Set a baseline or comparison method where feasible, and include review of the output by the people responsible for the work.
For example, a business might test whether an AI assistant helps staff draft a particular type of internal document. The test should define which documents are in scope, who checks drafts, what errors matter, and how the team will compare the process with its existing method. This is an illustrative approach, not a claim that AI will improve that task in every business.

Is the business ready to adopt AI?
Readiness is more than access to a model. The OECD’s 9 December 2025 discussion paper on small and medium-sized enterprises identifies four prerequisites: connectivity; data, algorithms, and compute; skills; and finance. It also describes different adoption pathways based on a firm’s maturity, the complexity of the use, and its scope. A small, contained use may call for different preparation from a complex use affecting several functions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Readiness area | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Connectivity | Can employees reliably access the systems and services required for the intended use? |
| Data, algorithms, and compute | Is relevant data accessible and fit for the task? Are the necessary technical resources and connections available? |
| Skills | Can the people who select, use, review, and oversee the system do those jobs competently? |
| Finance | Can the business support implementation and ongoing needs, not just an initial trial? |
These are prompts for assessing a particular use, not a pass-or-fail certification. The OECD paper reports that SME adoption remains lower than adoption of other digital technologies and lower than adoption among larger firms; that finding does not by itself explain the position of any individual business. Use the four areas to identify practical gaps and match the scale of the initiative to the organization’s maturity and resources.
How should a business choose and test an AI approach?
Compare possible approaches on business fit and the work required to put them into practice. A compelling model headline or benchmark is not proof that a system will perform well on a company’s actual tasks. The OECD’s 2025 AI Capability Indicators framework encourages systematic, cautious measurement of AI capabilities against human abilities and notes that advanced-level benchmarks remain incomplete. Evaluate the specific work, context, and consequences rather than relying on a general score.

| Decision area | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Problem and expected outcome | Which task is in scope, who benefits, and what observable result would justify adoption? |
| Data and infrastructure | What data and systems are needed, who can access them, and whether they are suitable for the intended use. |
| Skills and workflow | Who will use and review the system, what training they need, and how responsibilities or handoffs may change. |
| Implementation and ongoing resources | What work, technical support, and financial resources are required to start and maintain the use. |
| Evidence | What the pilot or comparable evidence shows for the relevant task, including failures and limitations. |
| Risk and oversight | How privacy, security, reliability, and human review will be addressed for the use case. |
| Evaluation | How success, unacceptable results, and the decision to stop or expand will be defined. |
Keep a pilot bounded enough that the business can inspect its outputs and learn from problems. Record the task, data involved, expected benefit, review process, and results. If performance is inconsistent or oversight is impractical, revise the use or stop it rather than treating deployment as inevitable.
How can employees build the skills AI adoption requires?
Training is part of implementation, not an optional extra after a tool is selected. The OECD/BCG/INSEAD 2025 firm-adoption report says businesses value human-capital development and often want clearer ways to identify and use the right AI skills. It points to training designed with industry, tailored to business needs, and grounded in real-world projects using relevant AI systems and datasets.

That suggests role-based learning rather than a single generic course for everyone. People who use AI in daily work need practice applying it and checking its output. People who select, integrate, or oversee systems need the skills appropriate to those responsibilities. The OECD.AI policy navigator entry for the AI Skills for Business Competency Framework, added 9 July 2025, offers a high-level reference for thinking about employee competencies; consult the framework itself before using it to define detailed requirements.

Use training exercises based on representative work, with suitable safeguards for business data. Give employees clear instructions about when AI may be used, what must be checked, and how to raise concerns. A pilot can also reveal whether existing roles, review steps, or procedures need to change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should a business manage AI risks?
Risk management belongs alongside the business case. Consider what could go wrong in the particular use, how likely the organization is to notice, and what would happen if an output were wrong, incomplete, or mishandled. Set controls proportionate to the task, including an appropriate human review process where needed.
NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework is voluntary guidance, not a legal requirement or certification. NIST released its Generative AI Profile, NIST-AI-600-1, on 26 July 2024, as a resource for identifying and managing risks associated with generative AI. These materials can inform an organization’s approach; legal obligations depend on jurisdiction and use case and should be checked separately.

The OECD’s 2025 trustworthy AI framework is directed at governments, not a private-sector compliance standard. Its organization around enablers, guardrails, and engagement can still prompt useful general questions about governance, data, infrastructure, skills, investment, procurement, and partnerships. Treat it as an organizational-thinking resource rather than a substitute for rules that apply to your business.
How can a business learn and adapt over time?
Use each trial to improve the organization’s ability to make the next decision. Keep track of what was tested, what happened, which controls were needed, what staff learned, and whether the use should continue. Revisit those decisions when the task, available technology, data, or applicable requirements change.
Businesses do not have to build every capability alone. The OECD/BCG/INSEAD report describes seven mechanisms used by institutions to support business AI adoption, drawing on 19 institutions in G7 countries plus Singapore: technology extension services for problem scoping and proofs of concept; grants for business research and development; business advisory; grants for applied public research; networking and collaboration; on-the-job training; and information services and open-source code. These are examples of possible support, not a checklist every firm must use. Availability and terms depend on the relevant institution and location.
The same report’s core survey covered 840 enterprises in G7 countries and another 167 in Brazil. Its fieldwork took place in 2022–23, before the broad post-2022 surge in generative AI use, so it is evidence about firm adoption and barriers from that period—not a current census of generative AI use or proof that a particular product increases productivity.

What should a business do first?
- Name one business problem. Define the task, the people affected, and the result that would matter.
- Check readiness. Review connectivity; data, algorithms, and compute; skills; and finance against the proposed use.
- Set boundaries and safeguards. Decide what data and work are in scope, who can use the system, how outputs will be checked, and what risks require controls.
- Train the people involved. Use practical exercises tied to the work and the systems employees are expected to use.
- Run and evaluate a bounded pilot. Compare outcomes against pre-set measures, capture limitations, and include employee or customer impact where relevant.
- Decide deliberately. Expand only when the evidence and operating controls justify it; otherwise revise the approach or stop.
