They do not show that those cases reflect the real world. In a 2026 essay, software author Remus Lazar describes how a test suite for a charging-station deduplication job passed while the product still showed duplicate map pins—a failure he traces to unrealistic test data.
How identical test records hid the problem
Lazar says his job combined charging-station listings from sources including Germany’s federal register, roaming networks and Tesla. After running for fourteen months, it was refactored in May and given a new test suite. Every test passed.
The test fixtures represented duplicate records for the same site with identical operator names. In production, Lazar found, duplicate pairs often carried operator labels from different organizations, so their names did not match as strings. The tests validated a pattern present in the fixtures, not the variation present in the records users encountered.
In Lazar’s account, just 1 of 9,269 duplicate pairs had matching operator names. He also reports that a third of the register listings being shown had a duplicate from another source within 100 metres. These are his reported measurements, not independently audited figures.

What the tests established—and what they did not
The suite established that the implementation handled the examples it contained. Because those examples shared the same operator-name pattern, passing tests could not establish that the job would identify records for the same place when their labels differed.
This is the gap between testing an implementation and testing its model of the world. A test can be technically correct and still encode a false assumption about how real records look. For software that processes outside-world data, a test suite made only of hand-created fixtures may confirm internal consistency without checking whether the underlying cases are representative.

How Lazar says he changed the fix
Lazar says the first approach was framed around preserving prior behavior. He changed the prompt for the replacement to focus on measuring the user-visible result against a production snapshot. The resulting agent-written fix matched records using distance and street name and did not depend on processing order.
He reports that the change took four days and needed two further corrections, which surfaced during dry runs against real data. In contrast, he says the May refactor was merged 78 minutes after it was opened and without review; he takes responsibility for that failure. His account does not establish that agents uniquely cause this kind of mistake. Rather, he argues that agent assistance can remove some of the slower work through which a developer might otherwise encounter real examples and question assumptions.

Review the assumptions as well as the code
Lazar recommends treating code review as two related checks: whether the implementation is sound and whether the assumptions behind it match the product’s real conditions. His suggestions are practices drawn from his account, not a guarantee that any particular review process will catch every defect.
Check the implementation
- Read the implementation rather than relying only on an agent’s summary.
- Examine edge cases, and ask whether each test would fail if the intended behavior broke.
- Keep changes small enough to inspect, and remove code you cannot explain or justify.
Check the model of the world
- When software models external data, include at least one fixture taken from a real-world case.
- Measure an outcome users can see, not only whether an algorithm ran or a test passed.
- Pay attention to comments that signal design friction, and inspect the product itself.
The central question is not just whether the code passes its tests, but whether the tests represent the cases the software is meant to handle. As Lazar puts it: “Test data that nobody took from reality does not test the concept.”
