Use them together: process uptime describes the age of the current Node.js process; readiness and liveness drive distinct Kubernetes actions; an outside monitor can detect failures the process cannot report; and diagnostic artifacts need deployment context to support a rollback investigation. None of these signals alone defines a rollback policy.
What each uptime and health signal tells you
A useful monitoring design starts by separating what a signal observes from what happens when it changes. A process-age metric is context, a probe can affect traffic or restarts, and an external monitor can test a path beyond the process itself.

Node.js documents process.uptime() as the number of seconds the current process has been running. It is not a service-availability measurement: a process can have a high uptime while clients cannot reach it, or a low uptime while it is healthy and serving traffic. How to design health endpoints and Kubernetes probes
Keep liveness focused on restart-worthy failures
A liveness check should answer whether the container is in a state where a restart is an appropriate recovery action. It is not a general-purpose dependency monitor. If a shared database or other dependency is unavailable, restarting every application container may not repair the dependency and can add load during an incident. Kubernetes warns that poorly designed liveness probes can cause cascading failures under load.

Use readiness for traffic eligibility
Readiness represents whether an instance should currently receive traffic. In Kubernetes, a Pod that fails its readiness probe is removed from matching Service endpoints. Decide which dependencies affect readiness according to whether the service can still fulfill its traffic-serving contract. The Node.js Reference Architecture notes that in some designs it may be preferable to return a dependency problem in an HTTP response rather than fail readiness: Node.js Reference Architecture: health checks.
Use startup probes for slow initialization
A startup probe gives a slow-starting container time to initialize before Kubernetes begins applying liveness and readiness checks. In the current Kubernetes probe documentation, the defaults are periodSeconds: 10, timeoutSeconds: 1, and failureThreshold: 3. These are configurable platform defaults, not universal alert thresholds or a recommended service policy. See Kubernetes liveness, readiness, and startup probes.

In short, the probe types are not interchangeable: startup gates the others, readiness controls traffic eligibility, and liveness can trigger restart. Configure each endpoint and threshold around the action it is meant to support.
Why failure alerts should come from outside the process
An endpoint served by the Node.js process can report the application’s current condition only while that process and its relevant network path can answer. If the process has crashed or the path to it is broken, it cannot reliably send its own failure alert.

Node.js recommends an external monitor in a separate process to detect application failures and recover or restart as needed. That monitor might page an operator, route traffic away, or initiate recovery, depending on the hosting platform and policy; the documentation does not prescribe a universal threshold, paging schedule, or recovery action. Choose an external check that exercises the user-visible path you care about. A successful local health response and a successful request from outside the application are different observations; decide which should alert, and what action that alert authorizes, explicitly.

What Kubernetes probe metrics add
Kubernetes exposes prober_probe_total, a cumulative counter with labels including container, namespace, pod, pod UID, probe type, and result. It helps show probe outcomes at the platform level, such as whether readiness or liveness checks are failing. It does not replace application-level request, latency, or failure metrics, which describe what users and application handlers experience. The metric is documented in the Kubernetes metrics reference.
When comparing a release with its predecessor, retain this platform telemetry alongside request and application metrics. Probe results can show that Kubernetes observed a condition and took its configured action; they do not, by themselves, explain the user impact or identify which deployment introduced a regression.

Preserve evidence for a rollback investigation
Capture runtime state
Node.js diagnostic reports are JSON summaries that can include stack traces, heap information, libuv handles, platform information, and resource usage. The Node.js documentation describes triggering reports for uncaught exceptions, fatal errors, signals, or programmatically, and presents them as tools for problem determination. Associate artifacts with the incident and release
A diagnostic report does not automatically contain every fact needed to justify a rollback. For an investigation, correlate it with the time, service or instance identity, deployment or revision identifier, alert state, and relevant health and request metrics. Keep the surrounding information in a system appropriate to your deployment; neither diagnostic reports nor probes establish a universal rollback policy.
- Record when the report or alert occurred and which service instance it concerns.
- Associate the event with the deployed revision so that symptoms can be compared across releases.
- Retain relevant probe outcomes alongside request and failure metrics.
- Document separately which alert conditions trigger paging, traffic changes, or rollback decisions.
These links between runtime artifacts and release history make an incident easier to reconstruct. The operational decision to roll back still belongs to your deployment policy, not to a health endpoint by default.
Make the alert and recovery policy explicit
A monitoring signal and its consequence are separate design choices. For each check, specify what it observes, who or what consumes a failure, and whether that failure should page, change traffic, restart a container, or merely add diagnostic context.
