They still render graphics, but their ability to perform many calculations at once also makes them useful for AI and high-performance computing (HPC). They have not replaced CPUs: modern systems combine different processor types, with the right architecture depending on the workload.
How have GPUs changed computing?
The key change is not that GPUs stopped being graphics processors. It is that their parallel hardware became useful beyond graphics. NVIDIA describes its GPU technologies as serving graphics, gaming and creative work as well as AI and accelerated computing; Intel likewise discusses heterogeneous systems that use CPUs, GPUs and other accelerators together.
This change is best understood across three connected layers: the compute units that do the work, the memory and interconnect that move data, and the software that lets applications use the hardware. A powerful chip alone does not guarantee an effective system if the data cannot reach it efficiently or the application cannot target its capabilities.
What makes a GPU architecture different?
Parallel compute and workload-specific features
GPUs are designed to execute many operations in parallel. That pattern suits graphics workloads such as rendering, and can also suit parts of AI and scientific computing. The details matter: applications must be able to use the GPU’s parallel design and any specialized units or numeric formats available.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For example, NVIDIA’s Hopper architecture includes Tensor Cores and a Transformer Engine. NVIDIA says Hopper Tensor Cores support mixed FP8 and FP16 precision for transformer calculations. This is a capability intended for relevant calculations, not a guarantee that every AI application will benefit equally. Hopper also includes features NVIDIA positions for HPC, underscoring that one architecture can target multiple workload types with different requirements.
Memory and communication
Processors need data as well as arithmetic capacity. A GPU’s local memory, memory bandwidth and connections to other GPUs can shape how well a workload scales, especially when a task spans several accelerators. In its Hopper materials, NVIDIA specifies fourth-generation NVLink multi-GPU I/O bandwidth of 900 GB/s bidirectional per GPU. That figure applies to NVIDIA’s described Hopper-generation system context; it is not a general specification for GPUs.

Programming software
Software determines whether developers can expose parallel work and use architecture-specific features. NVIDIA associates CUDA with GPU-accelerated applications. Intel describes oneAPI as a unified programming approach intended to target CPUs, GPUs and other accelerators across architectures. These are different approaches to programming heterogeneous hardware; neither means that every application runs unchanged or equally well on every processor.
What is a GPU used for besides gaming?
- AI: GPU parallelism and specialized units can support model training and inference when the software and workload can use them.
- HPC and scientific computing: GPU compute architectures can accelerate suitable calculations alongside CPUs in heterogeneous systems.
- Creative applications: GPUs continue to support graphics-intensive work and creative software, not only games.
These uses do not make every GPU interchangeable. Consumer graphics cards, workstation GPUs and data-center accelerators serve different system and workload needs. A device suited to rendering on a desktop may not be the best fit for a large multi-GPU AI system, and vice versa.

How do GPU architecture examples differ?
| Example | What the source describes | What the detail means |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA Hopper / H100 | NVIDIA’s 2022 Hopper launch described H100 as built with more than 80 billion transistors using a TSMC 4N process. | A launch-context specification for H100, not a count that applies to GPUs generally. |
| NVIDIA Hopper Tensor Cores | NVIDIA describes mixed FP8 and FP16 support for transformer calculations. | A workload-specific capability; realized benefit depends on whether software and calculations can use it. |
| NVIDIA fourth-generation NVLink | NVIDIA specifies 900 GB/s bidirectional multi-GPU I/O bandwidth per GPU in its Hopper materials. | A generation-specific interconnect specification, not a universal GPU bandwidth figure. |
| AMD CDNA | AMD describes CDNA as a dedicated GPU compute architecture intended for GPU-based compute. | A compute-focused architecture family; product and roadmap details can change over time. |
| Intel oneAPI | Intel presents oneAPI as a cross-architecture programming approach spanning CPUs, GPUs and other accelerators. | A software approach for heterogeneous systems, not a claim that hardware or application performance is identical across architectures. |
How should you compare GPUs?
Start with the workload rather than a headline specification. A meaningful comparison depends on what the application does and what the complete system can support.
- Workload fit: distinguish graphics rendering and creative applications from AI training or inference and HPC calculations.
- Compute design: check whether the application can use specialized units and supported numeric formats.
- Memory and communication: consider local memory capacity and bandwidth, and the interconnect requirements of multi-GPU work.
- Software support: verify support for the programming platform, libraries and frameworks the workload needs, including any portability requirements.
- System fit: account for power, cooling, host platform, availability and total system constraints.
Vendor architecture pages and specifications establish advertised capabilities, not a controlled cross-vendor ranking. The available material does not establish an independent, comparable benchmark or universal winner across graphics, AI and HPC.

Why the GPU revolution is about systems, not just chips
GPU computing took shape through the combination of parallel hardware, ways to move data among processors and software that exposes those processors to applications. A compute-focused design such as AMD’s CDNA illustrates that a GPU architecture can be aimed specifically at GPU-based compute, while Intel’s oneAPI illustrates a software strategy for programming across processor types. NVIDIA’s Hopper examples show how specialized compute features and a fast interconnect are presented as parts of one architecture generation.
Even the language used to describe the shift reflects a vendor’s perspective. At the 2018 Turing launch, NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang called Turing “NVIDIA’s most important innovation in computer graphics in more than a decade.” That is NVIDIA’s own assessment of its architecture, not an independent judgment of the broader GPU industry’s impact.
