Your refactor may still be on disk even if the AI session has stopped. A dead session does not, by itself, tell you whether files changed, whether a shell command finished, or whether the conversation can be resumed. Check the working tree before restarting the agent, asking it to repeat work, or reverting anything.

First, check what changed on disk

In the repository, run:

git status
 git diff
 git diff --cached

git status reports tracked and untracked changes; git diff shows unstaged edits, while git diff --cached shows staged edits. Review the output and the affected files before taking action. Untracked files may be hidden by Git configuration, so check the status output carefully and inspect the project directory if expected new files are missing.

This is the most reliable first step because the conversation, the agent process, and the working tree are different kinds of state. A transcript may be recoverable while the environment has changed, or files may contain useful edits even when no conversation can be resumed.

What “resume” means depends on the tool

Claude Code CLI

Claude Code documents claude -c to continue the most recent conversation in the current directory, and claude -r "<session>" to resume a session by ID or name. Its help article says, “Sessions are stored locally per project directory.” That means the project context matters when looking for a prior session. The commands restore a conversation; their documentation does not promise that an in-flight tool call finished, that files were rolled back, or that commands will replay. Claude Code also documents Ctrl+C as a way to cancel the current generation and redirect the conversation.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Claude Managed Agents

Managed Agents have distinct session and runtime rules. Its documentation says conversation history is preserved unless the session is explicitly deleted, while the sandbox is checkpointed when idle. The sandbox state expires 30 days after sandbox creation; after that, resuming starts with a fresh sandbox. An interrupt stops an in-progress model response immediately, but if tool calls are underway, the interrupt can take longer to apply and the session remains running until it does. A session budget cap pauses work before its next model request; increasing or removing the cap resumes paused work automatically.

These Managed Agents rules do not describe Claude Code CLI or other coding tools. Do not assume their retention periods or interruption behavior apply elsewhere.

Cursor and VS Code

A Cursor search result describes Agent checkpoints as automatic snapshots of code changes that can be restored, but the destination redirected to a general documentation index. That is not enough to give reliable current click-by-click recovery instructions.

VS Code documents discovery of supported local sessions created in Copilot CLI, the GitHub Copilot app, Claude Code, and Codex. Discovering a session in VS Code does not establish how the underlying agent handles a crash or restores an active tool call. VS Code also warns that separate conversations using the same folder or worktree can edit the same files; a distinct conversation is not necessarily an isolated workspace.

Conversation history is not an execution log

When a session ends during a refactor, the model response, a shell or editor tool call, and the file changes may each be in a different state. A saved conversation can show what the agent intended to do without proving that a command completed. Conversely, edits may already be present in the working tree even if the transcript is unavailable.

Unless the specific product documents what happened to an active operation, treat its outcome as unknown until you inspect the files and any relevant command output. Do not assume that a tool call automatically completed, stopped cleanly, or will run again when you resume.

Preserve useful partial work before continuing

  1. Inspect the current tree. Run git status, git diff, and git diff --cached. Read the changed files and identify partial edits, generated files, and anything that looks incomplete.
  2. Choose what to preserve. If the changes are coherent and ready to record, stage the intended files and commit them. A Git commit records staged content. If you need to set the work aside without committing, git stash saves work in progress for later restoration. Review exactly what will be committed or stashed, then verify the resulting status.
  3. Resume only after you know the starting point. Use the product’s documented recovery method, if available, and tell the agent to inspect the current files and diff before continuing. Ask it to describe what remains incomplete rather than repeating the whole refactor.
  4. Discard changes only deliberately. Restore and reset operations can remove work. Do not use them as generic session cleanup unless you have identified which changes you intend to discard.

Git can expose and preserve repository state; it cannot recover hidden model reasoning, lost terminal output, or an in-flight process.

Reduce the risk during long or concurrent refactors

  • Break large changes into reviewable steps and make intentional commits as useful milestones.
  • Use a stash when you need to pause uncommitted work and return to it later.
  • For parallel conversations that must not interfere, use separate Git worktrees where supported. Multiple chats pointed at the same folder can touch the same files.
  • Keep a short task note with the goal, key decisions, files changed, and next step if preserving context matters. A transcript is not a substitute for a durable description of the work.

Why there is no universal recovery promise

Recovery depends on the product and version, whether execution is local or managed in the cloud, what was saved, and whether a tool call was active. Claude Code CLI documents conversation continuation and resumption; Claude Managed Agents documents separate interruption and sandbox-retention semantics. Those specifics cannot be generalized to every coding agent. Exact mid-refactor recovery behavior for Codex CLI, GitHub Copilot CLI, and other tools is not established here.
