ChatGPT for macOS can use context from supported coding apps and, in compatible IDEs, propose edits to open files through a diff you can review and apply. You can also choose automatic application, so “seamless” does not mean edits happen invisibly or without your control. The feature is called Work with Apps; app support and setup vary.
What “seamless code editing” means
Work with Apps lets ChatGPT for macOS use content from a supported app as context for a conversation. With an IDE, it can also edit open files and present the change as a diff. OpenAI describes this as editing open files directly, without copy-pasting. You can inspect and apply the diff yourself or choose automatic application; the latter changes how the edit is applied, not whether the feature is an IDE integration.
This is a macOS app feature, not a general capability of ChatGPT in a browser or every ChatGPT app. OpenAI’s help page says the macOS app must be running and lists version 1.2025.057 or later for Work with Apps. See OpenAI’s Work with Apps on macOS guide for current setup and compatibility details.
Which coding apps does ChatGPT for macOS support?
OpenAI’s current compatibility list names these IDEs and editors. Editing is available only when working with IDEs; support for app context does not mean every supported app can receive code edits.

| IDE or editor group | Named apps |
|---|---|
| Xcode | Xcode |
| Visual Studio Code family | VS Code, Code, Code Insiders, VSCodium, Cursor, and Windsurf |
| JetBrains IDEs | Android Studio, IntelliJ, PyCharm, WebStorm, PHPStorm, CLion, Rider, RubyMine, AppCode, GoLand, and DataGrip |
Compatibility and requirements can vary by local app and setup. To check your installation, open ChatGPT’s Settings > Work with Apps > Manage Apps. The list there is the practical check for whether ChatGPT recognizes your app and whether it requires additional setup.
How to get ChatGPT to edit code in Xcode, VS Code, or JetBrains
- Install and launch ChatGPT for macOS. Work with Apps requires the macOS app to be running.
- Open the IDE and the file you want to work on. The workflow uses open-app context; it is not a request to edit an arbitrary file path that is closed in the IDE.
- Open the Chat Bar. Use Option+Space or select the ChatGPT menu bar icon.
- Connect the IDE. Use Work with Apps to connect the target app. If prompted, grant the required macOS Accessibility permission or install the app-specific extension.
- Check the recognized context. Inspect the banner in ChatGPT to see what it recognizes, then describe the change you want in your prompt.
- Review the proposed edit. ChatGPT returns a diff for an IDE code edit. Review it and apply it, or choose automatic application if that suits your workflow.
For VS Code, OpenAI says you must install the ChatGPT – Work with Code on macOS extension. Most other compatible apps use the macOS Accessibility API and require Accessibility permission. Because requirements differ, use Manage Apps rather than assuming setup is identical across editors.

What does ChatGPT see when Work with Apps is on?
OpenAI says ChatGPT includes the last 200 lines of open panes. If you select text, that selection receives focus and ChatGPT can also include nearby content, subject to a truncation limit. The recognized-content banner and the resulting chat let you inspect what context was used.
Content included from an app becomes part of the chat history. OpenAI’s help article explains controls for model improvement and Temporary Chat, as well as separate treatment for content sent to Team and Enterprise offerings. Review those controls and your organization’s policies before sharing sensitive source code. Enterprise and Edu administrators can disable Work with Apps or code edits, so availability may depend on workspace settings.
Can you review or undo ChatGPT’s code edits?
Yes. The standard workflow provides a diff for you to inspect and apply. OpenAI also offers automatic application as an option. If you need to reverse a change, OpenAI says you can revert diffs in ChatGPT or use Command-Z in the editor. As with any code change, inspect the result and test it in your project; a diff is a review mechanism, not a guarantee that a proposed change is correct.

When was direct IDE editing introduced?
OpenAI’s release notes date direct IDE code editing to March 6, 2025, with the announcement: “ChatGPT can now edit code directly in your IDE.” The notes say Work with Apps could read content from coding apps in an early beta on November 14, 2024, and document app changes through July 9, 2026. These dates describe the rollout history, not a promise that every app or workspace has identical capabilities today. See ChatGPT macOS app release notes.
