Starfish described a custom electrophysiology chip developed in partnership with imec. The company-reported specifications and features in the 2025 announcement are:
- Size and package: 2 × 4 mm, in a 0.3 mm-pitch BGA package.
- Power: 1.1 mW total consumption during normal recording.
- Recording: 32 electrode sites and 16 simultaneous recording channels at 18.75 kHz; the chip is designed to record spikes and local field potentials.
- Stimulation: biphasic pulse stimulation, with one current source that can stimulate arbitrary pairs of electrodes.
- Fabrication: a TSMC 55 nm process.
- Additional functions: onboard impedance monitoring, stimulation-voltage transient measurement, digital processing and spike detection. Starfish says channels can be omitted, data filtered or downsampled, and amplifiers disabled to adapt the design to power or bandwidth constraints.

Is this a complete brain implant people can use?
No complete implant system, consumer product or public purchase route was disclosed in the chip announcement. Starfish described a component for integration into future neural interfaces. The company’s longer-term design goal is a wireless, battery-free implant, but that goal should not be confused with an available or demonstrated complete system.
Starfish’s research page describes its wider work as developmental and says distributed neural interfaces of the multi-region kind it envisions do not yet exist clinically. The announcement does not establish human implantation, regulatory status or therapeutic outcomes.

What happens next?
Starfish invited potential collaborators in wireless power delivery, communications and custom implanted neural interfaces. That is a category-level invitation for technical collaboration, not a stated retail or consumer-access program. The company team page identifies Gabe Newell as a co-founder and Nate Cermak as a neuroengineer; it does not make the chip a Valve product.
