The Windows logo key is the keyboard key marked with the Windows symbol. Press it by itself to open or close Start; press it with another key to use a Windows shortcut, such as Windows + E to open File Explorer.
What does the Windows logo key do?
In Windows, pressing the key on its own opens or closes the Start menu. Holding it while pressing another key activates a shortcut for a common task. Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcut reference documents both standalone and combined actions.
Where is the Windows key on a keyboard?
Look for the key bearing the Windows logo. Its position depends on the keyboard layout, so there is no single location that applies to every keyboard. If you are unsure, identify it by the symbol rather than by a fixed position.

- Windows + R: open the Run dialog.
- Windows + D: display or hide the desktop.
Shortcut behavior can depend on the Windows version, settings, supported hardware, or the app in use. Microsoft notes that some keyboard shortcuts vary by application; check the relevant shortcut entry if a combination does not work in your situation.
Is the Windows logo key the same as a Windows product key?
No. The Windows logo key is a physical keyboard key used to open Start and invoke shortcuts. A Windows product key is a separate 25-character code used for activation, as explained in Microsoft’s product key guidance.
