An old educational game may need an update, a supported conversion, or retirement—not a new computer by default. First identify the exact title and version, its publisher, the devices it must run on, and any browser or runtime it depends on. Then check current support and test the actual school setup before deciding.

Identify what “legacy” means for this game

“Legacy” describes age, not a specific fault. A game may fail because its operating-system requirements are outdated, a browser no longer supports its plug-in, a required runtime is missing, or a school network blocks part of its delivery. A game that still launches may nevertheless be unsupported on current devices.

Before troubleshooting or buying hardware, collect these details:

  • Title and version: Record the exact product name and version shown in the app, installer, or account.
  • Publisher and support status: Find the publisher’s documentation for that title, including supported operating systems, known end-of-life notices, and available successors.
  • Device and operating system: Note the model and current OS version for student and teacher devices. Check whether the publisher explicitly supports them.
  • Delivery method: Establish whether the game runs in a browser, as an installed app, from a CD or other media, or through a learning platform.
  • Runtime or browser dependency: Look for requirements such as Flash, Java, a browser extension, or a particular browser version.
  • Work, licensing, and classroom needs: Check where saved work and learner records live, how the license is managed, and whether the class depends on offline access, accessibility features, or a school network connection.

Keep any error message, too. “Won’t run” is less useful to a publisher or IT team than the exact device, OS, launch method, and point of failure.

Separate an update from a workaround or replacement

These terms describe different outcomes. Check what the publisher supports rather than assuming that software which once launched is safe or reliable to keep using.

Option What it means What to verify
Update A newer release of the same product, or a supported fix for it. Whether it supports the school’s current devices, retains needed activities and saved work, and remains maintained.
Compatibility workaround A way to run the existing software in an environment it was not designed for today. Whether the publisher supports it, what features fail or are missing, and whether security and school policies permit it.
Conversion or migration A newer product or format that carries over some combination of the original content, gameplay, records, or teaching workflow. Exactly what transfers. A migration may preserve learning objectives without preserving the original game mechanics or progression.
Replacement A different title or activity selected to meet the same classroom need. Whether it serves the curriculum goal and meets device, accessibility, licensing, privacy, and support requirements.

Vendor examples show why “migration” needs scrutiny. EdAlive says its last installable school-software update for listed titles was in 2010, for Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.6, and that it could no longer provide technical support to school license holders for those titles from August 1, 2020. Its migration listings distinguish products where only educational outcomes carried over from those where content and gameplay migrated, sometimes with improvements. Those dates and terms apply to EdAlive’s listed products, not to educational games generally. See EdAlive’s Cloud Migration Pathways.

Support can also be time-limited even when software remains available. LEGO Education says SPIKE App support and current curriculum availability continue until June 30, 2031. Its notice says the app may remain online after support ends but will no longer receive updates or bug fixes, and compatibility with later operating systems may change. That is a product-specific commitment, not a universal support schedule. LEGO Education’s SPIKE support notice explains the scope.

Handle Flash and other runtime dependencies carefully

If the game relies on Flash, do not assume an old browser plug-in is still available or appropriate to restore. PhET Interactive Simulations at the University of Colorado Boulder says its Flash simulations could no longer run in modern web browsers starting January 1, 2021. That statement concerns PhET’s simulations; check the publisher’s own status for another title. PhET’s “Running Sims — General” help page describes its HTML5, Java, and Flash content separately.

Look for a publisher-supported HTML5 conversion, updated app, or successor. A conversion may not reproduce every interaction. For example, PhET notes that some legacy Java simulations can run in a browser using CheerpJ through its partnership, but some features are unsupported in that version. This is not a general fix for Java games. Articulate also says Flash-only courses will not load after Microsoft’s Flash-removal update is installed; its guidance applies to legacy Articulate apps and courses. See Articulate’s Flash-removal support page.

Do not disable security protections or revive an unsupported runtime as a general classroom workaround. If the publisher has no supported path, treat continued access as a separate decision involving school IT and the people responsible for security and accessibility.

Check whether a Chromebook, new Mac, or other current device is supported

There is no reliable yes-or-no answer based only on the device brand. A Chromebook may be supported by a web version but not by an old installer. A new Mac may not run software built for an older operating system. Confirm the exact model or OS version, browser, app version, and runtime against the publisher’s requirements.

Requirements pages can also expose delivery problems beyond the operating system. OpenSesame’s requirements page, updated July 13, 2026, says legacy desktop software may still work on older systems but cannot be guaranteed compatible because its developers no longer maintain it. It advises testing content before delivery and notes that learning-platform frames can hide interactive elements and restricted networks can block course delivery. These are OpenSesame-specific requirements and cautions, not specifications for an unrelated game. OpenSesame’s system requirements provide its current details.

Test the real classroom setup before rollout

A successful demo on one device does not prove that a school fleet, account setup, or network will work. Ask school IT to help test representative student and teacher devices and the actual delivery route.

  1. Choose representative devices: Include the current models and OS versions students and teachers will use, plus any school-managed browser or learning-platform setup.
  2. Test access: Sign in with the intended learner and teacher accounts, then launch the game from the route the class will use.
  3. Exercise the lesson: Check audio, keyboard or touch input, interactive elements, progress saving, and whether saved work is still present after closing and restarting.
  4. Check access needs: Try the accessibility features learners rely on, such as keyboard navigation or text alternatives, rather than assuming an update retains them.
  5. Test the network conditions: Confirm that required pages, media, and interactive content load on the school network, including any filters, firewall rules, or learning-platform frames.
  6. Record failures: Note the device, OS, browser or app version, account type, network, exact steps, and error message. Ask the publisher or IT staff about a supported alternative when a test fails.

Run the test with the lesson’s expected class workflow, not just a quick launch. A game that opens but cannot save progress, play its audio, or load through the school platform may not be usable for instruction.

Choose update, migration, or retirement against classroom needs

Compare the current game and each supported alternative on what the class actually needs. Do not equate matching curriculum outcomes with preserving the original experience.

Decision factor Questions to answer
Curriculum and gameplay Are the original activities, mechanics, and progression retained, or only the learning outcomes? Will the change alter how a teacher introduces or assesses the activity?
Learner records and licensing Can accounts, saved work, or progress records move? Does the existing license cover the new version or successor?
Devices and accessibility Does it work on the school’s actual operating systems and browsers? Are the needed accessibility features present and usable?
Delivery and offline use Does it require internet access, particular network permissions, or a platform integration? Can the class work offline if needed?
Support horizon Does the publisher state when updates, bug fixes, technical support, and curriculum resources end?
Migration effort What setup, data transfer, teacher preparation, and student retraining will be needed?

Retire the title if it cannot meet essential learning, security, accessibility, or reliability needs and no supported alternative can close the gap. Before discontinuing it, identify any learner work or records that must be exported and confirm the school’s license and data-retention obligations.

Make the decision from evidence, not age alone

Use a publisher-maintained update when one supports the school’s devices and preserves the classroom capabilities that matter. If no such update exists, assess a clearly supported conversion or successor by what it actually retains, then test it on the intended devices and network. Retire the game when reliable and appropriate classroom delivery cannot be achieved—not merely because it is old, and not on the assumption that a hardware upgrade will make unsupported software compatible.
