In a common RJ-21/RJ21X telephone wiring arrangement, its 50 contacts carry 25 tip-and-ring pairs: ring contacts are numbered 1–25, and the matching tip contacts are 26–50. That pinout is common in the cited telephone examples, not guaranteed for every device with 50 contacts.
What “50-pin Telco” means
“50-pin Telco” commonly refers to a miniature 50-contact ribbon connector used in telephone and PBX wiring. Sources also call this connector RJ-21 or RJ21X, and may use “Amphenol-type” or “Telco” terminology. These names describe a connector commonly found in multi-circuit telephone applications; check the equipment documentation rather than assuming every product using one of these labels has the same wiring.
It is different from the familiar modular telephone plug: instead of a single small plug for one line, the 50-contact connector can bring many circuits together at one interface. Legrand AV/C2G’s specialty connector guide also distinguishes 50-pin Telco connectors from 50-pin Centronics connectors. A matching contact count alone does not establish that two connectors are mechanically or electrically interchangeable.
How the common 25-pair pinout works
In the cited telephone arrangement, each telephone circuit uses a ring contact and a tip contact. The pair numbers align as follows:

Leviton’s catalog identifies pins 1 and 26 as the ring and tip for pair 1, pins 2 and 27 for pair 2, and continues this sequence through 25 pairs. Cisco’s VG310/VG320 guide gives the same pattern for a specific RJ-21 50-pin Amphenol cable. These references support the arrangement for those telephone applications, not a universal pinout for every 50-pin product. What the ISO standard does—and does not—cover
ISO/IEC 13575:1995 covers a specific 50-pole connector for a data terminal equipment (DTE) to data circuit-terminating equipment (DCE) interface. Its abstract says it “specifies a 50-pole connector, including the necessary mateability dimensions and the assignment of contact numbers, for use at the interface between data terminal equipment (DTE) and data circuit terminating equipment (DCE).” The standard’s stated functional and electrical characteristics follow CCITT Recommendation V.24 and ITU-T Recommendation V.12.

ISO lists the standard as published in March 1995, last reviewed and confirmed in 2001, and current. Its scope is that particular data interface; it should not be read as a specification for every RJ-21X PBX pinout or every cable sold as a 50-pin Telco cable. Before connecting or buying a cable, verify the complete connection—not just the number of contacts. The Cisco and Leviton references show particular wiring examples rather than a universal configuration.

- Connector and gender: Confirm the mating form and whether the equipment requires a male or female connector.
- Pinout: Check the equipment’s documentation for contact assignments. Do not assume the common 25-pair tip/ring arrangement applies to your device.
- Purpose and far-end termination: Confirm which circuits the cable carries and how its other end is terminated.
- Installation needs: For installations distributing multiple voice circuits, a compatible patch panel or termination assembly may be part of the setup; verify its pinout and mating form against the equipment.
- Length and construction: Choose a cable length and construction suitable for the installation once electrical and mechanical compatibility are established.
