A smart contract bug is an error or flaw in a contract’s code or behavior that makes it produce an incorrect or unintended result. If the flaw can be exploited to cause harm to confidentiality, integrity, or availability, it is a security vulnerability.

How a bug differs from a weakness and a vulnerability

People often use “bug” and “vulnerability” interchangeably, but the distinction matters. A bug is a broad defect: the contract behaves differently from what its designers intended. A weakness is a condition that could contribute to a vulnerability. A vulnerability is an exploitable flaw that can cause a negative security impact.

Ethereum’s EIP-1470 describes a weakness as a software error or mistake that, under the right conditions, can lead to a vulnerability, alone or with other weaknesses. It defines a vulnerability as one or more weaknesses that lead directly or indirectly to an undesirable state in a smart contract system. OWASP likewise cautions that a weakness is not itself necessarily a vulnerability: exploitability and negative impact matter. EIP-1470 terminology · OWASP Smart Contract Weakness Enumeration (SCWE)

So an unexpected result is a bug even if nobody can exploit it. A vulnerability requires an exploitable path and an adverse effect. Not every bug steals funds: some affect availability, performance, or correctness instead.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Common examples of smart contract bugs

Smart contract bugs are not limited to typos or syntax errors. They can arise in contract logic, permissions, external data, or the constraints of execution.

  • Reentrancy: An external call lets control return to the contract before the original operation is complete, potentially allowing the operation to be repeated in an unsafe state.
  • Access-control error: A function that should be restricted permits an unauthorized account to act, or blocks an authorized one.
  • Oracle manipulation: A contract makes a decision using external data that an attacker can distort, causing the contract to act on a false input.
  • Insecure randomness: A contract’s method for generating random-looking values is predictable or manipulable, undermining outcomes that depend on chance.
  • Denial of service or gas-limit problem: A transaction or required operation cannot complete—for example, because execution consumes too many resources or a blocking condition prevents progress.
  • Business-logic error: The code runs as written, but its rules do not match the intended rules, such as calculating a payment or enforcing a condition incorrectly.

These categories appear in Ethereum security guidance and OWASP’s 2025 Smart Contract Top 10. OWASP says its 2025 analysis drew on three named incident and loss reports documenting 149 security incidents and more than $1.42 billion in losses across decentralized ecosystems. That is the scope of those reports and OWASP’s analysis, not a complete estimate of all losses caused by smart contract bugs. Why bugs matter after a contract is deployed

A bug’s impact depends on what it affects and how it can be triggered. For a reported issue, useful questions include whether it is merely a behavioral defect or an exploitable vulnerability; whether it affects funds, authorization, availability, or correctness; what actor and conditions are needed to trigger it; and whether the cause lies in contract logic, an external dependency, or execution limits.

Deployment can make correction difficult. Ethereum.org notes that deployed contract code usually cannot be changed to patch security flaws, and assets stolen from contracts are difficult to track and mostly irrecoverable. “Usually” matters: some systems include upgrade mechanisms or other controls, but those options must be designed into the system rather than assumed after deployment. How teams reduce the risk of smart contract bugs

Test, but do not treat passing tests as proof

Tests can check expected behavior and help expose defects, but they cannot establish that every flaw is absent. Ethereum.org says testing will not uncover every flaw and that independent review increases the possibility of spotting vulnerabilities. Ethereum.org smart contract security

OWASP’s Smart Contract Security Verification Standard (SCSVS) is a set of requirements and tests aimed primarily at Solidity contracts on EVM-based chains. The surfaced stable version is 0.0.1, dated September 2024; the project may also contain newer in-progress material. OWASP’s SCWE provides a weakness enumeration and testing guide; its stable version is 1.0 and is marked as in active development. A useful report should describe the observed behavior, the intended behavior, the conditions needed to trigger the issue, the affected property, and whether an upgrade or mitigation is available. That makes it clearer whether the finding is a functional bug, a weakness to investigate, or an exploitable vulnerability.
