If Midnight says your contract “can’t be found on chain,” first check which network it was deployed to. An address returned by a local undeployed network is not publicly visible; a public deployment must be checked on the matching network’s explorer. Then confirm the deployment transaction completed and that your network ID, RPC, indexer, and explorer all point to the same environment.
Why an address does not prove a public deployment
A Midnight contract address identifies a contract for DApps and wallets to locate and interact with. The address is derived from the deployment transaction and remains fixed for that contract’s lifetime, but seeing an address in your application output does not establish that the contract was deployed to the public network you are checking. Midnight’s glossary explains the address; its deployment guide distinguishes local undeployed from the public preprod, preview, and mainnet networks.
A local deployment can return an address that is usable in the local environment but not discoverable on a public explorer. The key question is therefore not only “What is the address?” but “Which network produced it?”
Diagnose the missing contract in this order

Check the selected network ID
Confirm the network ID configured in your Midnight.js app. The deployment guide lists

Match the RPC, indexer, and explorer
All three should correspond to the same environment. An app pointed at Preprod cannot be diagnosed reliably by searching Preview, and an explorer for one network will not show deployments made to another. The official environments and endpoints reference lists separate services by network. It also matters if a project still has legacy configuration: a June 2026 community troubleshooting article reports an older project targeting the retired
testnet-02. Treat that as an attributed example, and verify old settings against the current official list rather than assuming the legacy network remains available. -
Verify that deployment finalized
Keep both the address and the deployment transaction details. Midnight’s deployment guide describes
deployContractreturning an address and the transaction resolving once finalized. Check the transaction and address on an explorer for the network used; the guide’s example is a Preprod deployment checked on a Preprod explorer. Check wallet fee preparation if submission failed
For Preprod, the official wallet funding guide says a wallet needs tNIGHT and DUST registration. Without DUST, submission fails with
Wallet.InsufficientFunds. If you have that error, address the wallet’s funding and DUST setup before treating the problem as an explorer lookup issue. -
Investigate proof generation and provider configuration if deployment hangs
Midnight.js generates a zero-knowledge proof, balances the transaction with DUST, and submits it; state reads use the indexer. The June 2026 community article identifies the proof server and network configuration as initial suspects when deployment or DUST registration hangs. Those are troubleshooting leads, not proof of a particular failure: use transaction and service evidence to identify where your own process stopped.

Allow for first-time wallet sync
The deployment guide notes that a fresh Preprod wallet’s initial sync traverses chain history and takes substantially longer than a local network. Slow sync alone does not show that a deployment failed.

Mainnet configuration changed recently. The official environment reference says the Midnight-hosted Mainnet RPC and indexer endpoints were retired at 22:00 UTC on September 30, 2026. It identifies Blockfrost as the primary public Mainnet indexer and node RPC provider as of October 1, 2026, and says requests require a Blockfrost Midnight Mainnet project token. Because endpoint arrangements can change, consult the current official environment reference for the presently documented Blockfrost endpoints and token requirements before changing a production configuration.

A deployment transaction and an explorer search answer related but different questions. First establish that the transaction completed on the intended network. Then use an explorer for that same network to locate it and inspect subsequent calls. If the transaction is confirmed but a lookup does not return the contract, compare the explorer and indexer environment with the transaction’s network before drawing conclusions. The available documentation does not establish a general indexing delay or explain every case of a confirmed transaction missing from a search result, so do not assume a delay without transaction or service evidence.

For the original question—“Why can’t my Midnight contract be found on chain?”—the useful evidence to gather is the configured network ID, the RPC and indexer URLs, the deployment transaction result, and the matching network’s explorer lookup. Those details distinguish a local-only address, a wrong-network search, a submission failure, and an unresolved lookup problem.
