I avoid Mockito’s generated-mock workflow when I want tests without another code-generation step. Mockito documents a setup that uses annotations, build_runner, and generated .mocks.dart files; Mocktail offers a similar Mockito-style API without generating those files. That is a workflow preference, not evidence that Mockito or build_runner is broken—or that one approach is measurably faster.
What “the build_runner tax” means here
For this article, “tax” means the extra setup and generated-file friction I choose to avoid when writing mocks. The available documentation establishes the steps involved, but does not quantify their time or maintenance cost. I’m describing a preference, not a benchmark.
In Mockito’s documented generated-mock path, you identify classes with an annotation, import the generated mock library, and run dart run build_runner build. The generated mock classes extend Mockito’s Mock class and implement the real classes. See the Mockito package documentation.
How the documented workflows differ
| Choice | Mock creation and files | Stubbing and verification | Build tooling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mockito generated mocks | Annotate the classes to mock and generate a library, commonly a .mocks.dart file. |
Examples use calls such as when(mock.sound()) and verify(mock.sound()). |
Uses build_runner for mock generation. |
| Mocktail | Write a small mock class extending Mock and implementing the type; no generated mock file is needed. |
Wrap stubbing and verification calls in closures, such as when(() => mock.sound()). Its documentation describes unified matchers such as any() and any(named: 'value'). |
Avoids build_runner for mock generation, but not for other generators in the project. |
Mocktail describes itself as a familiar Mockito-like API without code generation. Its migration guidance specifically says to remove @GenerateMocks, build_runner, and generated .mocks.dart files when migrating that workflow. Read the Mocktail documentation for its API and migration details.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why I choose Mocktail for this case
When a test only needs a mock and the project has no other reason to generate files, I prefer Mocktail’s handwritten mock approach. It lets me avoid the annotation-and-generation cycle while keeping a familiar stubbing style. The trade-off is that calls to when and verification are closure-based, and the mock class is written by hand.
This is not a blanket rejection of Mockito. Its package page points to a non-generated API alternative, so generated mocks are not the only route within Mockito. The details of that API can change; consult the current Mockito package guidance rather than relying on older examples.

When build_runner is already in the project
build_runner is a general-purpose Dart file-generation tool, not a Mockito-only utility. Dart documents both one-time builds and watch-mode builds, and other builders in a project may depend on it. If your project already runs it for other generated code, skipping Mockito’s generator will not remove that underlying tooling. See Dart’s build_runner documentation.
That makes the decision narrower: do you want generated mocks as part of your existing workflow, or would you rather write a small mock by hand? If another generator already requires build_runner, the setup distinction may matter less; if not, Mocktail avoids adding it solely for mock generation.

Choose based on the test boundary, not the package name
Mocking is one implementation choice within a testing strategy. Dart’s testing guide discusses unit, component, and end-to-end tests and notes that platform context matters. A dependency mock may suit a unit test that isolates a collaborator; it does not automatically make sense for every component or end-to-end test. Consider what boundary the test is meant to exercise and what generators the project already uses. See the Dart testing guide.
Flutter’s official unit-testing recipe illustrates Mockito as an option, not a requirement for Flutter unit tests. The recipe is at Flutter’s unit-testing documentation.

A practical decision
- Prefer Mocktail if you want Mockito-like mocking without generated mock files and are comfortable writing the mock class and using closure-based stubbing.
- Prefer Mockito’s generated workflow if its annotation-and-generation process fits your project and you want generated implementations for the classes you mock.
- Keep the context in view if
build_runneralready serves other builders: choosing Mocktail for mocks does not eliminate the project’s need for that tool.
The package docs establish these workflow differences, not a comparative performance result. No numerical time or maintenance saving follows from them.
