A fully modular PSU has detachable cables throughout; a semi-modular PSU has a mix of fixed and detachable cables; and a non-modular PSU has fixed cables. The practical difference is how much choice you have when connecting and routing cables—not a direct measure of performance or efficiency.
What “modular” means in a power supply
A power supply unit (PSU) delivers power to a PC’s components through cables. Modularity describes whether those cables can be unplugged from the PSU itself. It does not describe whether the PSU is efficient, powerful enough for a build, or electrically better.
With detachable cables, you can leave leads the build does not need disconnected at the PSU. With fixed cables, unused leads remain attached and must be routed or tucked away inside the case. CORSAIR describes the modular approach as allowing builders to “connect only the cables you need” in its fully modular versus regular PSU explanation.
Fully modular, semi-modular, and non-modular PSUs
| Design | Cable arrangement | What it means when building |
|---|---|---|
| Fully modular | All PSU cables can be detached. | Connect the leads the build needs and leave other cables out of the case. |
| Semi-modular | Some cables are fixed; others detach. | Unused detachable leads can be omitted, but fixed leads still need routing. Which cables are fixed depends on the model. |
| Non-modular | All cables are fixed to the PSU. | Every cable remains attached, including any leads the build does not use. |
Fully modular
Every cable can be unplugged from the PSU. This gives the builder the most flexibility to connect only the cables required by the PC.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Semi-modular
A semi-modular unit combines fixed and detachable leads. For example, CORSAIR says its CX-M semi-modular units retain at least the ATX 24-pin and EPS12V 8-pin cables, while other fixed leads can vary by model. That is an example for this product series, not a rule for every semi-modular PSU. Check the specific model’s documentation to see which cables are fixed.
Non-modular
All cables are permanently attached to the PSU. You cannot unplug unused leads at the power supply, so you may need to route or tuck them out of the way.

What modularity changes in a PC build
Cable routing and case space
The main difference is cable selection. A modular PSU lets you leave unused detachable leads out of the case, which may make cable management simpler. That can be useful when space behind the motherboard tray or elsewhere in the case is limited; how much it helps depends on the case, the build, and your routing preferences. Thermaltake discusses this space consideration in its modular versus non-modular PSU comparison.
Cost
Modularity can affect a PSU’s price, but it is not a reliable price formula. CORSAIR says fully modular models cost more than semi-modular and regular options in its comparison, and Thermaltake also notes possible added cost. Neither source establishes a current, market-wide price difference. Compare the specific models and local prices you are considering.

What modularity does not tell you
A modularity label only tells you about cable attachment. It does not establish the PSU’s wattage suitability, efficiency, electrical quality, noise, physical fit, or connector compatibility with a particular PC.
Efficiency certification is a separate consideration. MSI lists full, semi, and unmodular cable designs separately from 80 PLUS certification in its power-supply selection guidance. A fully modular PSU is not automatically more efficient or better-performing than a non-modular model.

How to choose between the three designs
- Check the PC’s requirements. Confirm the PSU’s wattage, required connectors, and physical dimensions against the build and case; cable design alone cannot establish compatibility.
- Look at the exact cable set. For a semi-modular PSU, check which cables are fixed. For a fully modular model, confirm that the cables you need are included and supported by its documentation.
- Consider cable-routing space. If your case has limited room to route or store excess leads, being able to omit unused cables may be helpful. If routing is not a concern, fixed cables may be acceptable.
- Compare complete models and prices. Choose based on the PSU’s documented requirements and features as well as its cable layout; do not treat modularity as a stand-in for quality or efficiency.
These categories describe real products: Seasonic presents CORE GX models as fully modular and CORE GM models as semi-modular, while CORSAIR’s VS500 is an example of a fixed-cable PSU. Those product examples illustrate cable arrangements; they are not performance rankings or endorsements.
