Shopify is moving its mobile apps toward native Swift and Kotlin, but that is not evidence that every team should leave React Native. Shopify says coding agents changed the economics of building and maintaining separate platform implementations for its own products; the company also acknowledges that native still means supporting two platforms. Before changing your stack, answer four questions about the assumptions and costs on your team.

Why is Shopify moving from React Native to native?

Shopify chose React Native in 2020 to share implementation across platforms, let more developers contribute, and reduce the work of keeping iOS and Android behavior aligned. In its September 10, 2026 announcement, Shopify said coding agents had improved enough to reduce the cost of implementing, testing, and reviewing features in Swift and Kotlin. Native development also keeps its apps closer to platform capabilities and first-party tooling.

Shopify framed the change as a reassessment, not proof that its earlier decision was mistaken. The company said its January 2025 view that React Native had a bright future was accurate for the information and circumstances at the time. It also says its React Native apps can be fast. As Shopify puts it, “Native still means building and maintaining software on two platforms, that cost has not disappeared.” Shopify’s announcement describes why the balance shifted for its team, not a universal rule for mobile development.

What is migrating, and what is still a plan?

Shopify said the Shop app had already shipped as native, migration of the Shopify app was underway, and its other mobile apps would follow. The Shopify app was described as having more than 300 screens, plus platform features such as widgets, Apple Watch functionality, and Siri Shortcuts. Those were the status and plans Shopify reported on September 10, 2026; the announcement does not establish that every migration is complete.

What did Shopify report about the Shop rebuild?

Shopify’s account describes a short proof of concept followed by a larger production migration. One engineer used coding agents for a week to demonstrate a close feature-for-feature port, but Shopify says that result was not ready to ship. A six-person core team then built native foundations and key journeys; feature teams joined during the migration to validate their areas and handle edge cases. Shopify reports that the Shop app went from proof of concept to publication in 12 weeks. That is the company’s account of its own project, not a delivery estimate for another team.

Shopify also reported these results for the native Shop app compared with its React Native version. All figures and characterizations below are self-reported by Shopify in its September 10, 2026 migration article; the cited account is not an independent benchmark. Shopify’s migration report explains its measurement context.

Measure Shopify-reported comparison What the figure means
iOS cold start 2,466 ms native vs. 3,200 ms React Native; Shopify reports a 23% reduction Time from tapping the app icon until initial home-feed content appeared.
Android cold start 2,233 ms native vs. 4,433 ms React Native; Shopify reports a 50% reduction Time from tapping the app icon until initial home-feed content appeared.
Session stability 99.95%+ native vs. historical 99.5%+ Shopify characterizes the change as a tenfold reduction in sessions that crash.
iOS release app size 68 MB native vs. 67 MB React Native; an increase of 1 MB, or 1.5% Release app size in Shopify’s comparison.
Android release app size 184 MB native vs. 293 MB React Native; a decrease of 109 MB, or 37.2% Release app size in Shopify’s comparison.
Android release build time Approximately 75% faster for the native version Shopify did not give an absolute build-time baseline in the reported comparison.
Android scrolling and navigation 120 FPS Shopify cites a recording on a Pixel device; this is not a guarantee for other devices or workloads.

These figures describe one company’s app and measurement context. They do not establish that coding agents caused the results, that they have been independently replicated, or that another app will see the same changes. In particular, the iOS size comparison was nearly unchanged even as the Android binary became smaller.

What did coding agents change, and why was a one-shot port not enough?

Shopify’s explanation is that agents reduced selected costs of implementing, translating, testing, and reviewing native features. It did not describe engineering as dispensable. Its migration workflow retained human ownership of architecture, parity checks, and release approval.

Shopify’s Helix process uses the existing React Native implementation and running app as references. Work is broken into ordered, small checkpoints for a screen or subscreen. A checkpoint must demonstrate behavior with tests, pass visual comparison against the reference, receive two adversarial code reviews, and get engineer approval before it is committed and work moves on. Shopify says review feedback is retained so the process can become more autonomous over time. Its principle is: “An attempt is allowed to be wrong. It is not allowed to ship until it isn’t.” Shopify’s Helix account presents this as a controlled feedback loop, not permission to ship unchecked generated code.

For the Shop migration, Shopify also built Tardis to give agents structured access to app events, logs, and state, as well as commands and comparisons between native and React Native runs. Comparisons considered event names, counts, and payload fields while allowing run-specific values such as timestamps and page UUIDs to differ. Shopify says native expertise remained essential: generated code could meet feature requirements while still adding duplication, architectural drift, or performance problems.

Four questions to ask before following Shopify

The following decision aid comes from Kiell Tampubolon’s article, not from an official Shopify checklist. Use it to revisit your own architecture; it is not a prescribed migration sequence from Shopify. Tampubolon’s article lays out the four questions.

  1. What assumption does your current stack decision rest on?

Write the rationale in one sentence. For example: “We chose React Native because sharing implementation lets our team deliver equivalent iOS and Android features with less total engineering effort.” If that sentence actually bundles multiple claims—about staffing, parity, speed, or cost—separate them. You cannot test an assumption clearly if it is hidden inside a broad statement such as “cross-platform is cheaper.”

  2. What would prove that assumption wrong, and has that happened?

Identify observable evidence that would change your decision, then compare it with the conditions that led you to choose the stack. Relevant changes might include new product requirements, platform-specific features, a shift in available expertise, framework or tooling changes, or a different development workload. A changed landscape is a reason to investigate; it is not by itself proof that a rewrite is worthwhile.

    • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  3. What does the abstraction cost your team now?

Measure local costs rather than borrowing Shopify’s figures. Pick measures that connect to your app and workflow, such as startup time, release binary size, build and test latency, platform-parity work, issue reproduction time, review effort, or accessibility and release quality. Use representative devices, workloads, and builds, and compare like with like. Record a baseline before deciding whether a new approach improves it.

  4. When will you review the decision again?

Put a date or a concrete trigger on the decision—for example, a major platform requirement, a change in team capacity, or sustained evidence that a measured cost has crossed a threshold you set. A review point makes the decision revisitable without turning every new tool or announcement into an emergency migration.

How should your team compare React Native with native development?

Start with your own requirements and baseline. A useful comparison accounts for both the work saved by sharing implementation and the work added by platform-specific development. These are local questions to evaluate, not advantages that can be assumed from Shopify’s result.

  • Team capacity: Check whether you can staff and review iOS and Android work, maintain native expertise, and absorb the organizational overhead of parallel platform development.
  • App quality: Evaluate startup, stability, size, responsiveness, accessibility, and release quality against your product’s needs on representative devices and workloads.
  • Development feedback loop: Measure build and test delays, simulator and device automation, review throughput, and how quickly the team can reproduce issues.
  • Migration risk: Plan for feature parity, account and session continuity, analytics events, accessibility, rollout, and the work required to maintain the existing app while the migration proceeds.
  • Tooling and framework changes: Investigate upgrade, dependency-support, and platform-integration costs in your environment instead of assuming Shopify’s experience generalizes.

Does Shopify’s move mean React Native is obsolete?

No. Shopify’s announcement is a company-specific decision, and the sources do not establish that its resources, agent infrastructure, native expertise, or workload match those of a smaller team. Shopify explicitly says its React Native apps can be fast, while acknowledging that native means maintaining two platforms. The reported migration shows what Shopify says worked for its Shop app under its process; it does not show that agent tooling has made native development cheaper than React Native across the industry.

For a team whose existing app meets its product needs and whose original cost assumptions still hold, Shopify’s move alone is not a reason to rewrite. Reconsider the choice when measurable local costs, team conditions, or product requirements have changed enough to challenge those assumptions.
