The Apple iPhone 17 and Samsung Galaxy S26 are the clearest conventional compact-phone comparison in the available evidence: both have 6.3-inch displays and stand 149.6 mm tall. The Galaxy S26 is slightly wider but thinner and lighter; the iPhone 17’s display supports adaptive refresh rates up to 120 Hz. Neither is a tiny phone, and a screen diagonal alone does not tell you how easy a handset is to grip or pocket.
There is no single industry definition of “small.” Tom’s Guide uses a screen under 6.5 inches as its editorial cutoff, but body width, height, thickness and weight are more useful for judging fit. This guide separates manufacturer specifications from editorial recommendations and does not assign a “best tested” award without verified hands-on results.
What counts as a small phone in 2026?
Small is a relative buying category, not a standard size class. A 6.3-inch screen can sit in a body that is still wide for your hand, while a foldable can have a large display when open and a much shorter footprint when closed. Tom’s Guide’s under-6.5-inch cutoff is one editorial definition, not an industry rule.
For a conventional phone, compare body height and width first if reach and grip matter. Thickness and weight help predict pocket feel. Then assess the display, cameras, battery performance, software support, platform and local price. Those latter buying factors need current model-specific evidence; screen size alone cannot settle them.

What the measurements mean in hand
The two phones have the same listed height and nearly the same width, so their external dimensions do not indicate a dramatic difference in reach. The Galaxy S26 is 0.75 mm thinner and 10 g lighter according to the listed figures. Whether that difference feels significant depends on your grip, case and pocket; specifications do not substitute for handling both devices.

Choosing between the two
Choose based on the operating system and ecosystem you prefer, then compare camera results, battery testing, software-support commitments and prices where you live. The available specifications establish the iPhone 17’s OLED display and adaptive refresh rates up to 120 Hz, but do not provide equivalent current battery tests, local pricing or support-duration figures for either phone. They are not enough to declare an overall winner.
Other compact-phone candidates to investigate
Editorial buying guides published in 2026 name several additional candidates. Those mentions are useful as a shortlist, not proof that every model is currently sold in your region, remains supported, or has been tested under comparable conditions.

- Google Pixel 10 Pro: Tom’s Guide’s June 2026 roundup identifies it as a small Android option. Its review coverage gives dimensions of 152.8 × 72 × 8.6 mm, a weight of 207 g and a 6.3-inch OLED screen. These are editorial-review figures rather than manufacturer specifications in the available evidence; check Google’s current regional specification listing before relying on them.
- iPhone 17e: named as a candidate by PhoneArena. The available information does not establish its dimensions, current regional availability, price or comparative test results.
- Pixel 10a: named by Android Central. The available information does not establish its dimensions, current regional availability, price or comparative test results.
- Galaxy Z Flip 8: Android Central includes it among small-phone choices and describes the folded form as pocketable. It is a different kind of compact: assess its closed footprint for carrying and its unfolded screen for use rather than comparing only display diagonal.
- Older possibilities in a T3 search result: Pixel 8a, iPhone 16e, Galaxy S25 and Asus Zenfone 10 appear in a title-matching result snippet. A snippet does not establish that they are current recommendations, available in your market or part of a complete tested lineup; confirm the full guide and linked reviews before considering them.
How to choose a compact phone that fits your daily use
- Measure the kind of “small” you need. If one-handed reach is the problem, compare height and width. If carrying comfort matters most, compare thickness and weight. For a foldable, note both the closed dimensions and the open display.
- Set your platform before comparing features. Decide whether you want iOS or Android and whether the phone needs to fit into devices and services you already use. The Galaxy S26’s listed platform is Android 16 with One UI 8.5 in Samsung’s 2026 first-quarter interim report.
- Check display qualities beyond diagonal. Compare panel type, refresh-rate behavior, brightness and readability using current manufacturer specifications and review testing. The iPhone 17’s listed OLED and adaptive refresh rates up to 120 Hz are established; do not assume an unreported rival specification is equivalent.
- Look for comparable camera and battery tests. Prefer reviews that explain test conditions and compare the specific models you are considering. No comparable current battery-test results are established here, so a battery winner cannot be named from these specifications.
- Verify software support and purchase details locally. Check the manufacturer’s current support commitment, the exact model and storage, carrier compatibility, warranty and price in your country. Availability and pricing can vary by region and date, and the information here does not establish current local prices or inventory.
- Try the actual phone if grip is decisive. A case changes width and thickness, and hand size affects reach. If possible, hold the phone with the case you expect to use and test the controls and one-handed tasks that matter to you.
Why this guide does not name a “best tested” winner
A manufacturer specification can verify a phone’s listed dimensions or screen features; it cannot establish camera quality, battery endurance or day-to-day comfort. The available T3 search result matches the topic title but does not show its full lineup, test protocol or last-updated date. Without the publisher’s methodology and the linked model reviews, it would be misleading to repeat a specific hands-on ranking or claim that one phone was tested and found best.
For a defensible shortlist from the information available, begin with the iPhone 17 and Galaxy S26: their manufacturer-backed size figures make a direct physical comparison possible. Treat the Pixel 10 Pro and other guide-named models as candidates to verify, not as proven winners. Your final choice should turn on the dimensions you can comfortably use and the current, comparable evidence for cameras, battery life, support and price.
