You can get a TLS certificate for your website at no charge from Let’s Encrypt. Certbot can request that certificate and, with a supported web-server plugin, install it for you. First check your hosting provider: many hosts issue and renew certificates automatically, so you may not need to install Certbot at all.
“SSL certificate” remains a common search term, but modern HTTPS uses TLS. A free certificate does not make your website free to run: domain registration, hosting, and server administration may still cost money.
First check whether your host already manages HTTPS
Sign in to your hosting control panel and look for an HTTPS, SSL, or security setting. Ask your provider whether it obtains and renews Let’s Encrypt certificates for your domain, and whether you need to enable HTTPS or redirect visitors from HTTP. If the host manages certificates, follow its setup instructions; a separate Certbot installation is unnecessary.
If your host does not offer managed HTTPS, determine whether you can administer the web server. Certbot generally needs command-line access and the permissions required to configure the site. Shared-hosting customers may not have those privileges. In that case, ask the host about its HTTPS options or consider a hosting service that manages certificates. Choose a validation method that fits your server
Let’s Encrypt must verify that you control the domain before issuing a certificate. The right Certbot method depends on your web server, your access, and whether inbound traffic can reach it. Use Certbot’s interactive instructions to select your operating system and web server before following installation commands; there is no single install command that applies to every system.

HTTP-01 validation requires the domain to be publicly reachable on port 80. DNS-01 avoids the need for an inbound connection to the server and is the option that supports wildcard certificates. See Let’s Encrypt’s challenge types documentation for the validation requirements.

Install the certificate with Certbot
After selecting the matching Certbot instructions, decide whether Certbot should configure the web server or only obtain the certificate. With a supported Apache or Nginx installer, Certbot can request the certificate and apply it to the server configuration. If you want to control configuration yourself, use Certbot’s certonly mode to obtain the certificate without installing it, then configure your web server according to its documentation.
On standard Unix-like deployments, Certbot’s managed certificate files are commonly under /etc/letsencrypt/live/. The exact location can differ by installation, so use the paths Certbot reports for your system. Configure the web server to use those managed paths rather than copying certificate files elsewhere; Certbot can update the files during renewal.

Once installation is complete, open the site using its HTTPS address and check that the browser reports a secure connection. If it does not, review the web-server configuration and the host’s instructions. Installing a certificate does not necessarily configure every application, subdomain, or HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect automatically.
Set up and test renewal
Certificate issuance is only a one-time part of the setup. Your site also needs a working renewal process. Many Certbot installations create a scheduled task or timer, but the mechanism depends on how Certbot was installed. Check the instructions for your package and confirm that a scheduler is present and enabled.

- Run Certbot’s renewal test, typically
certbot renew --dry-run, using the command and permissions appropriate to your installation. A successful dry run indicates that the renewal process can complete under test conditions; it does not replace checking the real scheduled task or timer. - Verify that the scheduled renewal mechanism for your installation is active. Use the operating-system or package instructions selected on the Certbot instructions page rather than assuming every installation schedules renewal the same way.
- If you use manual DNS or HTTP validation, arrange authentication hooks that can perform the challenge automatically. Without hooks, someone must repeat the manual validation when renewal is due.
Certbot’s renewal documentation describes how renewal works and how to test it. Avoid changing renewal configuration by hand unless you understand the effect and have a backup.

When testing an initial configuration, use Certbot’s staging environment or a renewal dry run before making production changes. Staging is intended for testing and does not provide a production certificate browsers will trust. A dry run checks the renewal workflow without replacing the live certificate. Certbot documents the relevant options in its testing instructions.

What “free HTTPS” does—and does not—cover
Let’s Encrypt is a certificate authority that provides TLS certificates at no charge, and Certbot is one ACME client for requesting and managing them. The certificate and client do not eliminate other website expenses: hosting, domain registration, and administration may still have costs. If your host already handles certificate issuance and renewal, that is usually the simplest route; use Certbot when you have the access and responsibility to manage the server yourself.
