The right real-time AI avatar platform depends on whether you need a live, interactive stream and whether your team already has a conversational agent. HeyGen LiveAvatar and Synthesia Interactive Avatars have the clearest current first-party details in the available material; Tavus CVI, D-ID Agents, Simli, and Liforma are candidates to evaluate, but their capabilities and terms are less fully established here. This is a use-case comparison, not a hands-on performance ranking.
What counts as a real-time AI avatar platform?
A real-time avatar streams a visual character during an interaction: a user speaks or sends input, an agent responds, and the avatar renders that response in a live session. That is different from generating a video in advance and delivering the finished file. A prerecorded video tool may create an avatar clip, but that alone does not make it a video-agent platform.
There are also two different product roles. Some services provide much of the conversational experience; others render an avatar while your application supplies the agent logic, such as the language model and speech recognition. Confirm the split before comparing products: it determines what you must build, operate, and pay for.
How the six platforms compare
The table summarizes what can be established from vendor materials and identifies the gaps to resolve. It does not imply that all six offer equivalent products or that their live performance has been measured on the same basis.

| Platform | Evidence-supported view | What to verify for your use case |
|---|---|---|
| HeyGen LiveAvatar | HeyGen describes a real-time WebRTC streaming platform that can connect to a customer’s LLM. Its Help Center documents separate LiveAvatar credits and plans. | Confirm the current plan, credit conversion for your integration mode, session-duration limit, and whether the offer is available to new subscribers. |
| Synthesia Interactive Avatars | Synthesia documents a customer-managed agent integration: the customer provides the LLM and speech-to-text, while Synthesia renders the avatar; built-in text-to-speech is optional. The documented session integration uses LiveKit. | Confirm the billed rate, supported avatar and framing options, transport requirements, and operational features your application needs. |
| Tavus CVI | An official pricing page is available, but the current feature boundaries and terms could not be established from the available official detail. A secondary comparison describes it as a conversational platform, which is not sufficient to verify its present capabilities. | Check the current official CVI documentation for architecture, pricing, usage limits, and which parts of the conversation stack are included. |
| D-ID Agents | D-ID’s API reference supports agent creation. The available official material does not settle the current live-streaming behavior or commercial limits. | Verify streaming, session and billing models, and which agent components D-ID supplies. |
| Simli | Simli has official developer documentation, but the available material does not establish detailed capabilities, limits, or pricing. | Confirm its input and output contract, supported integrations, concurrency terms, and billing. Community comments raise questions but are anecdotal, not product specifications. |
| Liforma | Liforma appears in a vendor-authored 2026 overview, but product documentation sufficient to verify its positioning was not available in the material reviewed. | Seek current first-party documentation and validate the product’s live-agent workflow before treating it as a direct alternative. |
What the documented plans and usage terms say
Headline subscription prices are not directly comparable when vendors meter active avatar time differently. The following are vendor-stated terms retrieved in 2026, not independent price checks; confirm current billing before committing.
| Platform or plan | Published term | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| HeyGen LiveAvatar credits | US$0.10 per credit; one credit covers 30 seconds in Full mode or one minute in Lite mode. | Credit-to-time conversion depends on mode, so the effective cost per active minute differs. HeyGen Help Center terms accessed in 2026. |
| HeyGen Essential | US$99 per month and 1,100 credits; sessions up to 20 minutes. | HeyGen Help Center listing accessed in 2026; verify current availability and terms. |
| HeyGen Business | US$475 per month and 6,000 credits; sessions up to 60 minutes. | HeyGen Help Center listing accessed in 2026; verify current availability and terms. |
| HeyGen Starter | US$19 per month. | The Help Center said this plan was unavailable to new customers beginning September 25, 2026; it was listed for existing subscribers only. |
| Synthesia Interactive Avatars | The operational documentation states US$0.10 per avatar-use minute and a 100 concurrent-session limit on paid plans. The product page displays US$0.12 per minute. | These Synthesia pages accessed in 2026 conflict on price. Do not assume either is your billed rate; ask Synthesia or verify in-account billing. |
| Tavus CVI, D-ID Agents, Simli, and Liforma | Current comparable prices and usage limits: not stated in the available official material. | Obtain current vendor terms; do not treat third-party estimates or community reports as official pricing. |
For any quote, calculate expected cost using your likely active minutes, plan minimums, credit conversion, overages, and concurrent sessions. A low monthly entry price can be misleading if your interaction mode consumes usage faster or if your peak traffic exceeds the included capacity.

How to choose based on your agent stack
Choose a bundled conversational experience if you want fewer components to assemble
Determine whether the vendor actually supplies the conversational loop you need, rather than just an avatar renderer. Ask which functions are included—LLM access, speech recognition, speech generation, orchestration, and session management—and which remain your responsibility. The six platforms should not be presumed to bundle the same pieces.
Choose a renderer for an existing agent when integration control matters
If you already operate an agent, assess how the avatar service connects to it: what input it accepts, what output it returns, how speech is synchronized, and whether your chosen transport and SDK are supported. Synthesia’s API documentation explicitly places the LLM and speech-to-text with the customer and offers optional built-in TTS; its documented session path uses LiveKit. HeyGen says LiveAvatar can connect to a customer’s LLM. For the other candidates, confirm the exact division of responsibility in current vendor documentation.

Check operations, not only the demo
- Transport and implementation: verify browser support, SDK requirements, network behavior, and whether you can use the transport your application already runs.
- Capacity and session rules: ask about simultaneous sessions, maximum duration, queues, reconnection behavior, and what happens when limits are reached.
- Avatar control: establish whether you can use stock or custom avatars, what consent or identity checks apply, and whether framing, gestures, or full-body output are supported.
- Production records: check availability of transcripts, recordings, webhooks, analytics, and controls for retaining or deleting session data.
- Support and security: review the vendor’s current security terms, support channel, and escalation process against your deployment requirements.
Important Synthesia implementation limits
Synthesia’s operational documentation describes a technical, customer-managed integration rather than a no-code embed. It lists LiveKit as the only transport, supports synthetic and personal avatars, and describes bust-only framing without gesture, hand, or full-body controls. It also says Synthesia does not provide a vendor session list, transcript, recording, or webhook system. These constraints may be decisive if your project depends on alternate transports, turnkey embedding, or built-in session records.
How to evaluate quality before choosing
There is no consistent independent benchmark in the available material that establishes which named service has the lowest latency, best lip sync, or most reliable interruption handling. Compare vendors in the browser, device, network, and speech stack you intend to deploy rather than relying on a polished sample.

- Use the same scenario: test equivalent prompts, voice settings, avatar framing, and network conditions across candidates.
- Measure the whole interaction: record the delay from the end of user speech to the first audible and visible response, not just a vendor’s isolated rendering time.
- Test turn-taking: interrupt the avatar, pause mid-sentence, ask a follow-up, and see whether speech and facial movement recover naturally.
- Check continuity: observe what the avatar displays while the agent thinks or between turns, including whether the stream freezes or drops.
- Exercise realistic load: test the expected number of concurrent users and session duration, then compare actual usage against the vendor’s billing unit.
- Repeat on target devices: include the browsers, mobile devices, and network conditions your audience will use.
Keep the test conditions and results so the team can compare reliability and cost on a like-for-like basis. A single showcase session is not evidence of production performance.
