The right virtual CISO (vCISO) depends on how much security leadership and execution your organization needs. SideChannel, CBIZ Pivot Point Security, Kroll, Atlant Security, and vCISO.com offer different delivery models, from a named leader backed by specialists to tiered advisory and embedded services. This is a fit-based shortlist, not a verified ranking: available comparisons do not establish an independently audited universal winner.

What a virtual CISO does—and what it may not do

A virtual CISO provides outsourced security leadership on a fractional, part-time, or contract basis. Depending on the agreement, the work may include security strategy and governance, risk assessments, compliance guidance, policy development, executive reporting, direction for an internal security team, and incident coordination.

The title alone does not define the scope. Strategic leadership is not the same as 24/7 log monitoring; an organization that needs continuous monitoring may also need a managed security service provider (MSSP) or another technical service. Confirm whether hands-on remediation, incident response, and operational tasks are included or separately contracted.

Five virtual CISO providers to consider

These providers are presented by delivery model and plausible buyer fit, not in rank order. Their descriptions and pricing are provider-published, and should be checked against a proposed statement of work.

1. SideChannel: named security leadership with specialist support

SideChannel describes a named security leader supported by specialists in areas including compliance, risk, engineering, cloud security, and incident response. That combination may suit a buyer seeking continuing executive-level guidance with access to broader technical capabilities.

The company says engagements typically cost $3,000–$12,000 per month and often start within two weeks. These are SideChannel’s published figures and claims, not independently audited pricing or service outcomes. Ask which specialists would be available to your account, how much time is included, and what work the quoted fee covers.

2. CBIZ Pivot Point Security: leadership plus virtual security-team support

CBIZ Pivot Point Security presents its service as a combination of leadership, guidance, and operational support. Its service description refers to policies aligned with ISO/IEC 27001 and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework. It may be worth considering if you want security-team support as well as executive guidance.

Before signing, establish who will lead the engagement, which staff will perform operational work, and what deliverables and time commitments are written into the proposal. The published description alone does not establish those details for a particular client.

3. Kroll: former-CISO advisory within a broader cyber-risk practice

Kroll describes vCISO advisory delivered by former CISOs. Its listed work spans security strategy, assessments, policies, security-team management, executive engagement, threat intelligence, and crisis management. Kroll also describes an approach based on NIST 800-53 that can be mapped to multiple regulatory regimes.

This model may suit an organization that wants security leadership connected to a wider cyber-risk practice. Validate the proposed team’s experience in your geography, sector, and regulatory environment, and agree on the precise scope of advisory and operational support.

4. Atlant Security: team-backed vCISO service

Atlant says it pairs each client with a team rather than relying on a single consultant. That approach may appeal to a small or midsize organization seeking continuity and access to a range of expertise.

Atlant also publishes a provider comparison that includes its own services. Treat that page as a market overview, not independent confirmation of its own or competitors’ quality. Ask for named team members, backup arrangements, relevant client references, and examples of deliverables.

5. vCISO.com: tiers from advisory to embedded ownership

vCISO.com separates its published offerings into advisory, managed, and embedded tiers. The distinction can help a buyer think through how much ongoing program responsibility it wants to delegate, but the tier names do not replace a detailed scope of work.

Its published starting prices are $3,000 per month for advisory and $5,000 per month for managed work; it says embedded engagements typically cost $10,000 or more per month. These are the provider’s own prices and positioning, not a market benchmark. Confirm what practitioner time, program ownership, technical execution, and response coverage each proposed tier includes.

How to compare proposals

Use the same questions with each provider so you can compare the service you would actually receive—not just the label or sales presentation.

  • Accountability and continuity: Who is the named practitioner responsible for your account? Will that person do the work, and who covers absences?
  • Engagement model and access: Is delivery by one advisor, a team, or a platform-supported service? Confirm hours, meeting cadence, access between meetings, and response times.
  • Relevant experience: Ask for experience with organizations of similar size and sector, and with the frameworks and regulatory requirements that matter to you.
  • Scope and execution: Specify whether the engagement includes a roadmap, risk register, policies, audit coordination, vendor reviews, remediation, board reporting, and incident support. Record exclusions and separately priced work.
  • Independence: Ask whether recommendations are tied to the provider’s monitoring platform, tools, or implementation services, and how alternatives are handled.
  • Evidence of fit: Request references from comparable organizations and concrete examples of deliverables or outcomes. Certifications and provider-written case claims are not substitutes for checking references and scope.
  • Commercial terms: Compare total fees, included retainer hours, contract term, renewal and exit provisions, overage rates, and response commitments.

If SOC 2 is a goal, distinguish readiness help and audit coordination from the audit itself: an independent CPA firm issues the SOC 2 report.

Published pricing: compare scope, not just monthly figures

The figures below were published by the providers and reviewed on October 5, 2026. They are not independently verified, may change, and are not evidence of a market-wide average. The figures are not directly comparable until you know what each engagement includes.

Provider Published monthly price How to interpret it
SideChannel $3,000–$12,000 SideChannel’s reported typical range; confirm the time, specialist access, execution, and response coverage in your proposal.
vCISO.com Advisory: from $3,000; managed: from $5,000; embedded: typically $10,000 or more vCISO.com’s tier-specific published prices; verify the included ownership, practitioner time, and services for the tier offered.
CBIZ Pivot Point Security Not stated in the reviewed provider description Request a proposal that specifies the leadership and operational support included.
Kroll Not stated in the reviewed provider description Request pricing against a defined scope, team, and response commitment.
Atlant Security Not stated in the reviewed provider description Request a proposal and verify current staffing, scope, and terms.

For any quote, compare practitioner time, program ownership, implementation work, number of frameworks, incident availability, and response service-level agreement (SLA). A low monthly figure may cover a narrower advisory role than a higher figure that includes execution or embedded ownership.

Choose based on the responsibility you need to delegate

Start by writing down the outcomes you expect: for example, a security roadmap, help with a specific framework, board reporting, or incident coordination. Then ask each candidate to map those outcomes to named people, scheduled time, deliverables, exclusions, and measurable acceptance criteria in the contract.

Before deciding, verify current availability, pricing, staffing, geographic and regulatory expertise, and references directly with the provider. The available comparison material does not supply comparable, independently verified customer outcomes that would justify declaring one company objectively best.
