There is no single best UK streaming service: the right choice depends on what your household watches, whether you need live sport or channels, and how much you value ad-free viewing, downloads and higher picture quality. For some households, BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Channel 4 Streaming cover much of the need at no subscription cost; others may prefer a paid service such as Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+, NOW or discovery+.

Compare the whole plan rather than its starting price. Ofcom’s 2026 report says 26% of UK viewers first turn to Netflix when seeking something to watch, 25% to the BBC and 15% to ITV; broadcaster-owned on-demand viewing rose 9% year on year. Those figures show why both subscription and broadcaster services belong in the comparison, not which one you should buy. Ofcom’s 2026 media report

Which streaming service is best in the UK?

Choose by viewing habit, not by a universal ranking. Netflix and Prime Video are broad-catalogue options; Disney+ suits households looking for Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars titles; Apple TV+ concentrates on its own originals; NOW is for Sky entertainment, cinema and sport memberships; and discovery+ is relevant to viewers interested in TNT Sports. These are useful starting points, not guarantees that a particular show or event is available: catalogues and rights change.

Free broadcaster apps deserve equal consideration. Ofcom reports that 70% of people watched traditional broadcaster content for at least 15 minutes in an average week in 2025. If your viewing is mainly BBC, ITV or Channel 4 programming, you may not need a paid subscription year-round.

What is worth paying for?

Pay for a service when its included catalogue or live programming gives your household enough regular value to justify the recurring charge. If you want one paid service, start with the content you actually watch; if your interests are divided, compare a rotating subscription against keeping several services active at once.

  • Choose Netflix or Prime Video if you want a broad catalogue, then verify that the shows you care about are included rather than separately paid for.
  • Choose Disney+ if its franchises and family catalogue are a frequent draw, and decide whether an ad-supported or higher-feature plan makes sense.
  • Choose Apple TV+ when its originals are the specific reason you want another subscription.
  • Choose NOW when its Sky content, channel memberships, cinema or sport match your viewing; check the membership and add-ons for the exact content.
  • Consider discovery+ if TNT Sports is central to your choice, after checking the relevant current plan and rights.
  • Start with broadcaster apps if BBC, ITV and Channel 4 programmes meet most of your needs. Remember the BBC iPlayer licence requirement and check the live-TV rules for your viewing.

Do free UK apps replace a paid service?

They can, if the programmes you want are available through BBC iPlayer, ITVX or Channel 4 Streaming and you are comfortable with each service’s terms. Ofcom reports that broadcaster-owned on-demand viewing rose 9% year on year, reinforcing the practical value of including these players in a household comparison. It does not mean they carry every subscription-service title or replace live sport options.

BBC iPlayer has a TV Licence requirement. Watching live television can also trigger licensing requirements, including when watching through a streaming service. The cited comparisons do not set out the full current legal wording or fee, so check the official TV Licensing guidance for your exact viewing pattern.

Check device compatibility before buying hardware

Most households can start by checking the apps on their existing smart TV, streaming player, games console or set-top box. App support varies between services and devices, and a service’s advanced features may work on fewer devices than basic playback. Confirm the exact model and the individual apps you need before purchasing a player.

Apple says its Apple TV app is available on Apple devices, streaming platforms, smart TVs and game consoles, and lists services including Disney+, Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and NOW within the app. That ecosystem listing does not prove every listed service or feature is supported on every device. Apple TV app availability

How to choose for your household

  1. List what you watch. Separate broadcaster programmes, subscription originals, films, children’s content and live sport; name the specific shows or events that matter.
  2. Check free options first. Search BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Channel 4 Streaming before adding a paid service, and consider the TV Licence rules for your viewing.
  3. Match the paid service to the gap. Select the service whose included catalogue or live programming covers what the free apps do not.
  4. Compare the full plan. Check ads, picture and audio quality, simultaneous streams, downloads, add-ons, contract terms and device compatibility.
  5. Calculate total household spend. Add recurring memberships and any add-ons or separate rentals; compare direct subscriptions with relevant bundles.
  6. Review after subscribing. If a service no longer earns its place in your viewing routine, check its current cancellation terms and reconsider it at the next billing point.

Why compare both broadcaster apps and subscriptions?

Ofcom’s 2026 annual media report says 26% of UK viewers first turn to Netflix when looking for something to watch, compared with 25% who first turn to the BBC and 15% to ITV. Ofcom also reports broadcaster-owned on-demand viewing rose 9% year on year and that 70% watched traditional broadcaster content for at least 15 minutes in an average week in 2025. These measures describe viewing patterns, not the best purchase for any one household. Ofcom 2026 annual media report
