Canon’s manuals describe support code 5200 as “Printer error has occurred,” but the fix depends on your printer model. First identify the exact model—usually printed on the front or top of the printer, or shown in its settings—then follow the matching Canon manual. Do not apply one model’s button sequence or printhead procedure to another.
What does Canon printer error code 5200 mean?
Canon’s model-specific support pages label code 5200 as a printer error; they do not give one cause that applies to every Canon printer. The recommended recovery differs by series: some ink-tank models require ink checks and printhead maintenance, while several PIXMA and imagePROGRAF examples begin with a restart and direct users to service if the error persists.
Identify your printer model before trying a fix
Check the model name on the printer’s front or top, or in its settings. Then locate that exact model’s Canon manual and use its instructions for support code 5200. The procedures below are examples from specific series, not a complete compatibility list.
Canon 5200 fixes by model series
G3030 series
- Check the remaining ink and refill if needed.
- Turn the printer off and unplug it.
- Reconnect the power and turn the printer on.
- Run Replace Ink in Print Head.
Canon says to complete the steps in order. Its manual warns, “Changing the order or omitting steps may cause other problems.” If the error returns after these steps, Canon says printhead replacement may resolve it; if 5200 returns after replacement, request repair from a Canon service center. Do not tilt the printer when transporting it, because ink may leak. Canon G3030 series instructions.

G500 and G2010 series
- Check the ink and refill if needed.
- Turn the printer off and unplug it, then reconnect it and restart.
- Run printhead Cleaning.
- Run Ink Flush.
Canon’s instructions for these models say Deep Cleaning is not required. If the code returns after the prescribed steps, printhead replacement may help; if it recurs after replacement, contact a Canon service center. Avoid tilting the printer while moving it. Follow the instructions for your exact series: G500 series or G2010 series.
TS5500 series
- Turn the printer off and unplug it.
- Reconnect it and restart the printer.

TR4500 series
- Turn the printer off and unplug it.
- Reconnect it and restart the printer.
If the error remains, contact Canon service. Be aware that unplugging the TR4500 can delete faxes stored in the printer’s memory. Canon TR4500 series instructions.
PRO-541 imagePROGRAF
- Turn the printer off and unplug it.
- Wait a moment, then reconnect it and restart.
- If 5200 returns, record the detailed ECxx-xxxx code on the display.
- Contact Canon customer service and provide that detailed code.

When to replace a printhead or request service
Printhead replacement is a possible later step in Canon’s cited G3030, G500, and G2010 instructions—not a universal fix for code 5200. Confirm your exact model and compatible printhead before buying a part. If the code returns after replacement, Canon directs users to a service center. For the cited TS5500, TR4500, and PRO-541 procedures, Canon instead recommends service escalation when a restart does not clear the error.
