The Dell PowerEdge XR7620 is a configurable 2U, two-socket server for running compute- and GPU-intensive workloads near their data source. Its edge-oriented design offers substantial GPU and storage options, but CPU and memory details differ across Dell’s surfaced product information, and the chassis must be configured for the site’s airflow, power, rack and accelerator requirements. StorageReview’s 2024 benchmarks show what one L4-equipped system achieved—not what every XR7620 will deliver.
What is the Dell PowerEdge XR7620 for?
Dell positions the XR7620 as a ruggedized edge server for machine aggregation, AI inference, industrial automation, machine learning and analytics. StorageReview also identifies video and point-of-sale analytics, retail, warehouses, robotics, and field or remote-office aggregation as candidate uses. These are workload categories, not a guarantee that a particular application will fit: buyers need to size CPU, memory, storage, networking and acceleration for their software and operating conditions.
Processing data at its source can avoid sending every input to a remote environment before taking action. That is a general rationale for edge computing, not a measured latency, bandwidth, cost or safety benefit established by StorageReview’s XR7620 test.
How much GPU acceleration can it support?
Dell lists capacity for up to four 150 W single-width, full-height/half-length low-profile GPUs, or up to two 300 W double-width, full-height/full-length GPUs. Its US configurator lists the NVIDIA L4 24 GB as a single-width option. StorageReview tested one NVIDIA L4, described in its review as a 24 GB, 70 W card.

Those figures describe different things: Dell’s stated maximum platform configurations and one specific card tested in one system. They do not establish that every card with a compatible-looking form factor will work. Dell’s manual cautions against using GPUs, network cards and other PCIe hardware that it has not validated and tested for the system.
- Confirm the exact GPU part number and system SKU with Dell or the integrator.
- Verify card dimensions, power draw, riser, airflow and the selected power supply together.
- Match the accelerator to the workload; card count alone does not establish application performance.
Which CPU and memory configuration should buyers specify?
Dell’s detailed specification section lists two 4th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, up to 32 cores per processor, and 16 DDR5 RDIMM slots at speeds up to 4800 MT/s, with a maximum of 1 TB. StorageReview’s tested unit used two Intel Xeon Gold 6426Y processors, identified as 4th Generation Xeon Scalable.
Dell’s Australia product-page summary conflicts with its detailed table: the summary says “2 x 5th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors” and “16 x 128 GB DDR5 (2 TB),” while the detailed section lists 4th Generation processors and a 1 TB maximum. StorageReview’s 2024 specifications also identify 4th Generation processors. Treat the displayed information as inconsistent rather than assuming either ceiling applies to every configuration. Before ordering, get the CPU generation and SKU, supported DIMMs, slot population and maximum memory confirmed for the exact system in a current quote or technical guide.

| Drive arrangement | Dell-listed maximum | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Up to eight direct-attached E3.S NVMe drives | 51.2 TB | Backplane, drive qualification and controller for the chosen configuration |
| Up to four 2.5-inch SAS, SATA or NVMe SSDs | 61.44 TB | Drive interface, controller and selected 2.5-inch backplane |
Listed storage-controller options include PERC H965i, PERC H755, PERC H355 and HBA355i, as well as software RAID S160. BOSS-N1 boot storage supports two M.2 SSDs in RAID 1. These are options, not components included in every system. StorageReview’s unit had 480 GB Dell BOSS RAID 1 boot storage and four Solidigm SSDs; the review separately mentions a 60 TB drive used to move data between locations. That test setup is not Dell’s maximum-capacity configuration.
Dell lists two 1GbE LOM ports, optional OCP 3.0 and up to five PCIe slots in a two-CPU setup. Product materials name iDRAC9, iDRAC Direct, Redfish API and OpenManage integrations. StorageReview’s test system also had Broadcom and Intel 10Gb network cards, so its networking configuration went beyond the base LOM ports.

Will it fit the site, rack and power environment?
Physical access and airflow are configuration decisions, not interchangeable installation details. Dell offers front-access reverse-airflow and rear-access normal-airflow versions; its manual says one type cannot be converted into the other. Select the orientation to match the rack layout and facility airflow before purchase.
- Chassis and depth: Dell lists the chassis as 3.41 inches high and 19 inches wide. Rear-access depth is 17.6 inches from ear to rear wall, 19.53 inches with bezel or 18.57 inches without. Front-access depth is 22.51 inches with bezel or 18.57 inches without.
- Rails and transit cases: Dell lists sliding rails for standard racks and a rugged transit-case rail option with a cited MIL 901E-certified Pelican case pairing. That does not mean the standalone XR7620 itself carries the case certification.
- Power: Listed redundant hot-swap PSU options are 1800 W Titanium (200–240 VAC or 240 HVDC), 1400 W Platinum (100–240 VAC or 240 HVDC), 1100 W Titanium (100–240 VAC or 240 HVDC), and 1100 W DC (-48 to -60 VDC). Check the feed available at the deployment site and the demands of the selected GPU and other components.
- Temperature and cooling: Dell’s US product information gives continuous operation from 23°F to 131°F and a minimum cold boot temperature of 41°F. The system is air-cooled with six cold-swap fans. Validate inlet conditions, airflow direction and dust filtering for the actual location and configuration.
“Rugged” is not a substitute for environmental validation. StorageReview explicitly says it did not test ruggedized-server survivability under the described conditions, so its results do not establish long-term field reliability or full-system environmental survivability.

StorageReview also reported that the XR7620 was 45 percent faster for image classification than a Dell XR12 with a single 300 W GPU accelerator. That is the review’s specific comparison; it should not be generalized to other workloads, configurations or systems. The review does not establish fleet-wide reliability or a controlled, universal buying comparison.

As a dated US storefront snapshot, Dell’s configurator displayed a starting price of $37,004.61 and “Sold Out” on October 5, 2026. The page also showed a financing offer through July 29, 2026, a date that had already passed. These are time- and region-specific listings, not a current universal quote; check availability and pricing through Dell’s regional business channel.
Verdict
The XR7620 is most compelling when an edge site needs a configurable 2U server with substantial local compute, GPU acceleration, storage choices and remote-management options. Its fit depends on details that cannot be inferred from the model name: validated accelerator, confirmed CPU and memory support, selected drive arrangement, access orientation, airflow, power and site conditions. StorageReview’s L4-equipped test provides a useful performance reference for one build, while Dell’s configuration-specific quote and validation should determine what a buyer can actually deploy.
