A digital purchase does not always mean you own a permanent, platform-independent copy. Depending on the service’s terms, the type of file, and the law where you live, a shutdown or removal can affect access, downloads, or playback. The key distinction is whether a title is merely no longer for sale or whether the service has also withdrawn access from people who already bought it.
What happens to digital purchases when a service shuts down?
When a platform closes, you may lose some or all of the services that made a purchase usable. Depending on how the content works, those can include redownloading it, account authentication, cloud synchronization, updates, or playback on a particular device. A file already stored on your device may continue to work, but that is not guaranteed if it relies on the platform or a compatible device.
There is no universal outcome: the service’s terms, the content’s technical protections, third-party rights, and applicable consumer law all matter. A closure does not automatically mean every local file stops working, and keeping a file does not necessarily preserve the right or ability to use it.
Can a store remove movies, games, or other content I bought?
Yes, a platform’s terms may allow content to become unavailable after purchase, but the terms do not settle every consumer-law question. Apple’s Media Services terms say that purchased content will generally remain available to download, redownload, or otherwise access, while also warning that content may later be removed and become unavailable for further download or access. PlayStation’s US terms likewise make access subject to applicable agreements and note that some purchased licensed content can depend on device compatibility and continued availability from third-party licensors. Removal from sale is not the same as losing access
A title disappearing from a store’s catalog may only mean new customers cannot buy it. Existing buyers may still be able to download or use it. By contrast, withdrawal of existing access can prevent redownloads or playback. Check the notice and your library rather than assuming that one event means the other.
A downloaded file may still depend on the platform
Local storage is helpful only when the service permits a download or export and the file remains usable. DRM protection, account sign-in, server checks, a compatible device, or third-party licensing can still control access. An external drive can preserve an authorized local file; it cannot preserve a cloud license or replace a service required to authenticate or play the content. Apple’s terms distinguish DRM-free and DRM-protected content; PlayStation’s terms describe compatibility and third-party availability conditions.

Do I own a digital copy after I buy it?
The word “buy” by itself does not establish that you own a permanent copy independent of the seller. A transaction may provide a limited license or account-based right to access content under the service’s terms. Review the terms that applied to the specific item and transaction, including any stated limits, account requirements, or conditions on downloads and offline use.

- How it is protected: a DRM-free file or one that requires platform software, authentication, or a supported device.
- Who controls availability: the platform itself or a third-party rights holder whose license may affect continued access.
- What changed: the item was removed from sale, existing access was withdrawn, or the whole service closed.
- What the terms and local law say: including any notice or limitation presented when you bought the item.
What remedies might apply if access is withdrawn?
There is no single worldwide remedy, and a platform’s terms do not override mandatory consumer protections. In the European Union, Directive (EU) 2019/770 covers contracts for the supply of digital content and digital services; Member States applied its rules from 1 January 2022. For covered lack-of-conformity cases, Article 14 provides for bringing the content or service into conformity, a proportionate price reduction, or termination when the directive’s conditions are met. A restriction arising from third-party rights may also be relevant to conformity. Whether a particular removal qualifies depends on the facts and the national rules implementing the directive; it does not automatically make every catalog change a refund case. Directive (EU) 2019/770.
Before relying on a remedy, identify your country, the type of transaction, the purchase date, the terms disclosed at purchase, and the platform’s stated reason for removal. For an individual dispute, consult the consumer authority or advice service in your jurisdiction.

What to do if you have lost access
- Verify the purchase. Sign in to the account used for the transaction, check the relevant library, and locate the receipt.
- Establish what changed. Read any email or in-app notice and check whether the title is unavailable for new buyers or whether existing access was withdrawn.
- Check the file and playback conditions. Look for download or export options, DRM restrictions, online authentication requirements, and device-compatibility limits.
- Keep records. Save the receipt, relevant terms, removal notice, and support correspondence.
- Contact the seller or platform. Give the title, transaction date, and country, and request a clear explanation and an appropriate remedy, such as restored access, an alternative, or a refund.
- Escalate locally if needed. If the response does not resolve the issue, contact a consumer authority or advice service where you live. In the EU, assess the facts under the applicable national rules implementing Directive 2019/770 rather than assuming every removal guarantees a refund.
