An MBA can support a move into management consulting, finance, technology and product, corporate functions, or entrepreneurship—or help you advance in your current field. It is a general management degree, not a guarantee of a particular job or salary. What it can do for you depends on your experience, target role and location, and the program’s recruiting access and fit.

What jobs can I get with an MBA?

MBA graduates work across functions and industries. The categories below describe common paths, not a list of jobs reserved for degree holders; employers also hire people into these roles through other routes.

Consulting

Management consulting and strategy are prominent MBA destinations. INSEAD reported that 50% of its Class of 2025 entered consulting; MIT Sloan reported consulting as 32.3% of its Class of 2025 employment outcomes; and Harvard Business School (HBS) reported 21% among Class of 2025 graduates who actively sought and accepted full-time roles. The schools use different populations and measures, so these percentages are examples, not a universal estimate. See the INSEAD employment statistics, MIT Sloan employment report, and HBS career statistics.

Finance

Financial-services paths can include investment banking, corporate finance, asset management, and related work. HBS reported financial services at 34% of its Class of 2025 active seekers who accepted full-time roles; MIT Sloan reported finance at 20.6% of its Class of 2025 employment outcomes. Those figures reflect each school’s reporting definitions rather than the odds for an individual graduate.

Technology and product

Technology companies hire MBA graduates for product management, growth, strategy, and general management roles. MIT Sloan’s 2025 report discusses product management and AI-related pathways, and reports technology at 23.3% of its Class of 2025 outcomes. HBS lists technology at 22% for its stated reporting group.

Corporate and functional roles

Graduates may pursue corporate strategy, marketing, operations, general management, or leadership-development roles. INSEAD reported that 17% of its Class of 2025 entered corporate sectors, a broad industry category rather than a single job function.

Healthcare, manufacturing, energy, and other fields

MBA hiring also extends into healthcare, pharma and biotech, energy, retail and consumer products, automotive and aerospace, manufacturing, media, and nonprofit or government work. MIT Sloan and HBS report activity across several of these sectors, though their categories are not identical.

Entrepreneurship

Some graduates start businesses or join startups. MIT Sloan reported that 11.1% of its Class of 2025 graduates started businesses. That is a school-specific outcome, not a typical result guaranteed by earning an MBA.

Can an MBA help me change careers?

It can help with a career change by providing business coursework, access to recruiting and alumni networks, and opportunities to build evidence of relevant skills. Whether that support translates into a switch depends on the target job, your prior experience, geography and work authorization, and the program’s reach in the market you want to enter.

INSEAD reported that 65% of its MBA Class of 2025 changed sector, function, or country. The measure combines several kinds of transition, so it does not mean that 65% changed industry alone. Its employment page also reports that 81% received at least one job offer three months after graduation. The reported classes completed in December 2024 and July 2025; the survey included 929 participants, had a 98% response rate, and 902 participants were in formal recruitment. An offer is not the same as an accepted job.

Other schools publish different measures and windows. Texas McCombs reported that 80.2% of job-seeking graduates in its Full-Time MBA Class of 2025 received offers within six months, while 78.2% accepted positions. MIT Sloan reported that 91.0% of job seekers had an offer by three months after graduation and that 62.9% of offers were school facilitated; its report said 94.1% had received an offer as of publication. These school-level outcomes describe particular classes and recruiting contexts, not causal proof that an MBA produces the same result for every student. Review the definitions in the Texas McCombs career outcomes and MIT Sloan reports before comparing them.

What skills matter, and what does an MBA add?

A credential is not itself proof of competence. For a target role, look for ways to learn and demonstrate analytical decision-making, communication, leadership, teamwork, strategy, financial and operational literacy, and relevant technology fluency. Courses matter, but so do projects, internships, prior work, and recruiting preparation that let you show how you apply those skills.

AI fluency is an area to assess rather than assume. GMAC’s Corporate Recruiters Survey 2025 was conducted from January to March 2025 and received 1,108 responses from recruiters and staffing-firm recruiters in 46 countries. GMAC’s overview says employers value knowledge of how to use AI tools more than in the prior year when hiring both now and in the future. This is a survey finding, not a universal requirement for every job. Ask employers and alumni in your target field which capabilities they use and how a program helps students demonstrate them. Read the GMAC Corporate Recruiters Survey 2025 overview.

How should I interpret MBA employment and salary figures?

Check the cohort, geography, denominator, outcome definition, and measurement date before treating a published statistic as relevant to your plans. “Offer,” “accepted position,” and “employment outcome” are not interchangeable, and a salary median applies to the reported group—not to every graduate or applicant.

For example, MIT Sloan reported Class of 2025 median salaries by industry of $190,000 in consulting, $175,000 in finance, and $165,000 in technology. These are school-reported industry medians, not expected salaries for all MBA graduates. INSEAD reported an overall median annual salary of €100,000 and a mean of €102,200, alongside a median sign-on bonus of €28,900 and median performance bonus of €22,100. Salary and bonuses are separate figures, and the euro amounts should not be compared directly with dollar figures without considering currency, cohort, compensation definitions, and reporting coverage.

Texas McCombs reported an average base salary of $154,053 for its Full-Time MBA Class of 2025, in addition to its offer and acceptance figures. An average base salary is not the same measure as a median industry salary or total compensation. Use each school’s report to understand its own class, and avoid ranking programs from headline numbers alone.

How do I evaluate an MBA before enrolling?

  1. Name the outcome. Specify the role, function, and location you want. Decide whether your aim is advancement in your field, a career switch, exploration, or entrepreneurship; different goals require different recruiting support.
  2. Read recent employment reports closely. Check who is counted, whether the figure concerns offers or accepted jobs, how long after graduation it was measured, and what share of graduates reported salary. Compare like with like rather than putting different denominators side by side.
  3. Verify recruiting access for your target path. Look at employers, career advising, internships, experiential learning, alumni reach, and placement by function and geography. An overall placement rate can obscure differences among roles and markets.
  4. Match skills to curriculum and practice. Map job requirements to courses, projects, internships, and recruiting preparation. Ask whether students can demonstrate relevant analytical, leadership, operational, or technology skills.
  5. Calculate total and opportunity costs. Include tuition, fees, living costs, financing, scholarships, and earnings you may forgo while studying. Consider how likely you are to return to work in the target market. Build your own scenarios; the published figures above cannot determine an individual return on investment.
  6. Assess fit with your starting point. Prior experience, work authorization, geography, and willingness to accept a short-term step back can affect recruiting options. Ask the program and alumni how those factors have played out for people pursuing your intended path.

Is an MBA worth it?

It may be worth pursuing when a specific target role or advancement path requires capabilities, recruiting access, or a network you cannot reasonably build another way—and when the likely benefit justifies the full cost and time away from work. It is a weaker fit if the goal is vague, the program has limited access to your target market, or the financial case depends on assuming a headline salary or placement figure will apply to you.

When comparing programs, weigh target-role placement, industry and geographic access, employer participation, curriculum and experiential learning, relevant alumni and career coaching, outcome definitions, total cost and foregone earnings, and program format and time away from work. Published salaries are useful only when currency, base-versus-total compensation, cohort, and reporting coverage are clear.
