It may accept, route, store, or distribute messages through queues, topics, or other channels. The term describes a role in a system—not one specific product or protocol.
How an asynchronous communications server works
A sender submits a message or event to a server-side channel. The server makes it available to the intended receiver or receivers under the system’s delivery rules. The sender can often continue after the service accepts the message, while the receiver processes it later.
An acceptance acknowledgement means the service has accepted or received a message; it does not necessarily mean that the receiver has finished processing it. If the sender needs the final result, the application must arrange a way to obtain it, such as a status endpoint, callback, or response queue. AWS guidance on asynchronous communication describes this separation between sending work and completing it.
Queues and publish-subscribe are different patterns
Point-to-point queue
A producer places a message in a queue for a consumer. In a competing-consumer setup, one consumer processes a given message. The consumer typically acknowledges it after processing; if it crashes before acknowledging, the message may become available again. Apache ActiveMQ Artemis documents this acknowledgement and redelivery behavior, which means consumers should be prepared for a message to arrive more than once. Apache ActiveMQ Artemis address model

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Publish-subscribe
A publisher sends a message to a topic or channel, and a broker routes it to interested subscriptions. The publisher does not need to know each subscriber. Whether a subscriber can receive messages after being offline, replay earlier events, or rely on a particular delivery guarantee depends on the service and subscription configuration. Amazon SNS publish-subscribe overview
These patterns are not interchangeable: a queue commonly distributes work among consumers, while publish-subscribe can fan an event out to multiple subscriptions. For a specific implementation, check who receives each message, whether it persists, when it is acknowledged or removed, and whether old events can be replayed.

What the term does—and does not—specify
There is no single protocol that makes a server asynchronous. AsyncAPI 3.0.0 describes servers that may be message brokers or services exposing message-driven APIs, including WebSocket APIs. Its examples span AMQP, HTTP, JMS, Kafka, MQTT, STOMP, WebSocket, Google Pub/Sub, and Pulsar. AsyncAPI defines a channel as an addressable part of a server through which senders and receivers exchange messages. AsyncAPI 3.0.0 specification
Asynchronous describes the application interaction, not necessarily every network exchange beneath it. For example, Kafka supports asynchronous messaging use cases, but its documented wire protocol uses client-initiated request-response exchanges over TCP. Kafka topics are divided into partitions, a detail relevant to message distribution and ordering. Apache Kafka protocol guide

Google describes Pub/Sub as a managed asynchronous service for decoupling message producers from processors, with uses such as streaming analytics, data integration, service integration, and parallel task processing. That is one implementation category, not a universal recommendation. Google Cloud Pub/Sub overview
When asynchronous communication is useful
Asynchronous messaging can let services work at different rates, absorb traffic bursts, support parallel processing, and reduce the need for an immediate response. Government of Canada guidance describes messaging in which a sender does not need an immediate response before processing occurs. Government of Canada: What is asynchronous messaging?

The flexibility adds design and operational work. If processing is delayed or fails, teams need a way to inspect message status and trace work across services. Retries can produce duplicate deliveries, so consumers often need idempotent processing: handling the same message again without applying its effect twice. Ordering, eventual consistency, retry policies, dead-letter handling, monitoring, and security also need deliberate decisions. Microsoft Azure event-driven architecture guidance
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Questions to ask when choosing an implementation
- Who receives each message? Determine whether one consumer handles a queued message or whether an event fans out to multiple subscribers.
- Does the system retain messages? Check whether messages survive receiver downtime and whether consumers can replay earlier events.
- What does acknowledgement mean? Establish when the service considers a message handled, how retries work, and whether failed messages go to a dead-letter destination.
- Does order matter? Find out what ordering guarantees exist and how routing or partitioning affects them.
- Can the team operate it? Consider deployment and maintenance, monitoring, security, scaling, and integration with existing systems.
The answers vary by service and configuration; the label “asynchronous communications server” alone does not promise persistence, replay, ordering, or a particular delivery guarantee.
