OpenAI acknowledged a launch-day autoswitcher failure and later restored GPT-4o to the picker for paid users. Those events show a rough product transition—not proof that GPT-5 was universally worse than GPT-4o or that AI as a whole has entered a lasting downturn.
Why were people unhappy with GPT-5?
The reaction reflected several concerns at once: whether answers performed as expected, whether users could still choose a familiar model, and whether GPT-5 felt like the assistant they wanted. OpenAI had announced GPT-5 as the default for signed-in ChatGPT users, replacing GPT-4o and several other models in that experience. Its plan was to simplify the product with a unified system that could answer quickly or spend longer reasoning. For users accustomed to choosing a model, that transition also meant less direct control at first. OpenAI’s August 7, 2025 announcement describes the launch plan.
Some users reported errors and a loss of choice
Contemporaneous coverage described complaints about simple-task mistakes and the removal of GPT-4o from the model picker. These reports establish that users raised those concerns, but they are not a representative survey of all ChatGPT users. Axios covered the complaints and the subsequent explanation of a routing issue; TechCrunch reported on the rollout, requests for GPT-4o’s return, and an inaccurate chart shown during the launch presentation.
The assistant’s tone also changed
Some people found the initial GPT-5 experience too reserved and professional. OpenAI’s release notes say the default personality was made warmer on August 15, 2025, after user feedback. The note distinguishes a warmer style from sycophancy—excessively agreeing with or flattering the user. OpenAI’s ChatGPT release notes record this change.

What went wrong with the launch-day model routing?
GPT-5 was presented as one system that could route requests to a fast response or more deliberate reasoning. That depended on an autoswitcher deciding which approach fit a query. On August 8, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged that the autoswitcher had been out of commission for part of launch day. Axios quoted him saying, “The autoswitcher broke and was out of commission for a chunk of the day, and the result was GPT-5 seemed way dumber.”
A broken router offers a specific explanation for why some people may have received answers that seemed poorly matched to their requests. It does not establish how much of the overall criticism the problem explains, nor does it account for objections to the changed model picker or conversational style. Axios’s account of the bumpy launch and TechCrunch’s coverage of Altman’s remarks describe the incident.

Why did OpenAI bring GPT-4o back?
Users asked to keep access to GPT-4o rather than have the new default replace it outright. OpenAI’s release notes say GPT-4o returned to the model picker for paid users on August 12, 2025, alongside selection controls and changes to usage limits. This was a response to requests for choice, not an admission that GPT-4o was better at every task. The dated entry is documented in OpenAI’s release notes.
The sequence matters: the initial launch emphasized automatic switching, while the follow-up restored a way for eligible users to select GPT-4o. The launch announcement and dated notes describe what OpenAI planned and changed in August 2025; they do not establish which models are available to every user now.

Was GPT-5 worse than GPT-4o?
There is no single answer that applies to every task or user. A person who valued GPT-4o’s familiar tone, predictable access, or performance on everyday prompts could reasonably prefer it. GPT-5’s unified system and reasoning approach were intended to help with a wider range of requests, and contemporaneous reporting identified coding as one of its more visible strengths. A preference for one model on particular tasks is not the same as evidence that it is universally superior.
OpenAI’s launch post reported its own evaluation results, which should be read as company-published findings rather than independent measures of typical user satisfaction. For example, OpenAI said external experts preferred GPT-5 pro over GPT-5 thinking on 67.8% of more than 1,000 economically valuable reasoning prompts; on that same evaluation, it said GPT-5 pro made 22% fewer major errors than GPT-5 thinking. Those figures compare two GPT-5 modes in a defined evaluation, not GPT-5 with GPT-4o in ordinary ChatGPT use. The launch announcement provides OpenAI’s evaluation context. The Associated Press quoted Cornell computer science professor John Thickstun describing the benchmark improvements as “modest but significant.” AP’s launch coverage offers an outside expert perspective.

| What matters to you | How to think about the comparison |
|---|---|
| Complex reasoning or coding | OpenAI presented reasoning as part of GPT-5’s unified system, and Axios reported coding among its more visible use cases. That is not a guarantee of better results on every coding or reasoning task. |
| Quick everyday questions | The launch-day routing failure could make some responses seem poorly matched. A particular answer or early rollout experience does not by itself establish a general model ranking. |
| Choosing a model yourself | The launch plan emphasized automatic switching; OpenAI’s August 12 notes later recorded GPT-4o’s return to the picker for paid users and selection controls. |
| Conversational tone | OpenAI said the initial default felt too reserved to some users and made it warmer on August 15. Style preference is subjective and can affect which model feels more useful. |
Does GPT-5’s launch mean AI is in the “trough of disillusionment”?
It is reasonable to use the phrase as an interpretation of the gap between AI expectations and an imperfect product experience, but this launch cannot establish an industry-wide downturn. Gartner’s Hype Cycle framework describes a trough as a period after inflated expectations fade, when reports of performance problems and low returns on investment become more prominent. That framework is a way to discuss technology expectations; it is not a measurement proving that all AI has reached the same stage.
IEEE Spectrum placed GPT-5’s reception in a wider discussion of AI disappointment. It quoted Neurologyca CEO Juan Graña saying, “AI burst onto the scene with intense buzz, but is now sliding into what Gartner calls the ‘trough of disillusionment.’” That is Graña’s interpretation, not an official Gartner diagnosis of the entire AI field. IEEE Spectrum’s analysis makes the broader argument; Gartner’s Hype Cycle for Generative AI, 2025 explains the framework.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: GPT-5’s launch was rough, some users objected to the experience, and OpenAI made visible adjustments. It does not show that most users considered GPT-5 a downgrade, that dissatisfaction lasted, or that AI as a whole entered Gartner’s trough.
