Not literally—and not in every job. In a September 16, 2026 opinion article for InfoWorld, Nick Hodges argues that coding agents are making supervisory work a more visible part of software development: assigning tasks, supplying context, monitoring progress, reviewing code, and deciding when a result is ready. His headline is a thesis about how the work may shift, not an empirical finding that developers have become people managers.

Why does Hodges say developers are becoming managers?

Software development has long had a career-ladder tension: individual contributors could find advancement or higher pay limited unless they moved toward management. Technical paths such as architect, staff developer, and chief scientist offered alternatives, though senior technical roles could also mean less time programming and more time in meetings.

That shift toward coordination is not wholly new. Senior developers already work more closely with colleagues, and tech leads commonly oversee work and assess code quality without necessarily managing people’s careers or performance. Hodges’s argument is that coding agents extend this supervisory dimension: a developer increasingly delegates work to a system, gives it the conditions to succeed, and judges what it produces.

What does managing a coding agent involve?

Hodges describes a practical cycle of direction and oversight. Jim Bourke, identified by InfoWorld as founder and CEO of Zide Software, puts the analogy this way: “A coding agent is most useful when you treat it more like an employee than an autocomplete tool,” and, “It needs a clear assignment, the right context, a safe place to work, checkpoints, and a way to evaluate the result.” These are Bourke’s views as quoted in Hodges’s opinion article.

  1. Assign the task. Define what the agent should do rather than relying on an open-ended request.
  2. Supply context. Provide the relevant requirements and background the agent needs to work effectively.
  3. Choose the working environment. Set an appropriate place for the work, with suitable boundaries.
  4. Monitor progress. Use checkpoints to see how the task is going and intervene when needed.
  5. Review the output. Assess the code rather than assuming it is correct because an agent produced it.
  6. Decide when it is ready. Determine whether the work meets the bar to check in.

Is directing an agent the same as managing a person?

No. The responsibilities overlap, especially around assigning work, providing context, checking progress, and evaluating results. But people managers may also be accountable for an employee’s performance and career—responsibilities not established as part of supervising a coding agent. Hodges explicitly says the skills involved in leading agents and managing people overlap but are not congruent.

Responsibility Directing a coding agent Managing a human colleague
Assign work and provide context Part of the agent-supervision practices described by Hodges. Also relevant to coordinating a colleague’s work.
Monitor progress and review output Part of checking agent work and deciding whether it is ready. Senior technical roles may supervise work and assess code quality.
Account for a person’s career or performance Not described as an agent-supervision responsibility. Can be part of people management.

Will coding agents change the software developer career ladder?

Hodges raises the possibility that agent supervision will affect what developers do and how technical careers develop, but he does not establish which skills employers will reward or how career ladders will change. The article offers no adoption, productivity, displacement, or workforce-share figures, so its broad claim should be read as an argument about emerging work—not a measured description of all developers.

For a developer, the useful takeaway is narrower: technical judgment may increasingly include framing work for agents and evaluating their output, alongside writing and reviewing code. Whether that creates a distinct career path, changes promotion criteria, or simply adds responsibilities to existing roles remains unsettled.
