eBPF is a Linux kernel instruction set and runtime that lets the kernel load small programs at supported attachment points, such as networking and tracing hooks. Linux’s verifier checks a program before it can be loaded, analyzing its control flow, memory access, and use of permitted functions. That constrains how it can execute—but does not prove that its purpose is harmless.

What eBPF is—and what it is not

eBPF is a kernel facility, not a single application. A userspace program can submit eBPF instructions to Linux with the bpf(2) system call. After validation, a program can be attached to a supported kernel hook and run in that hook’s context. The program type and attachment point determine what context it receives and which operations are available.

The name reflects eBPF’s relationship to the original Berkeley Packet Filter, but modern eBPF is used beyond packet filtering. Linux documents program types for networking, tracing, and other kernel interfaces. The kernel’s BPF documentation describes the facility and its program types; its kernel-side documentation is a work in progress, so details should be checked for the target kernel.

How Linux checks an eBPF program

Before a program is loaded, the verifier analyzes whether its instructions meet the rules for that program type. Linux describes safety analysis in two broad stages: control-flow validation, followed by analysis of instruction paths and changes to program state. The verifier tracks registers and stack slots, including whether values are scalars or pointers and what range of values they may contain. See the kernel verifier documentation.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Control flow and execution paths

The verifier examines the program’s control flow and reasons about possible instruction paths rather than relying on one sample execution. While tracing those paths, it updates its understanding of register and stack state. A program that cannot satisfy the verifier’s rules is rejected rather than loaded.

Pointer use and memory bounds

Memory operations must use pointer types allowed in the program’s context, and accesses must stay within permitted bounds and meet applicable alignment requirements. Context pointers are subject to the rules for the specific program type. Stack data must be initialized before it is read, so a program cannot safely load an arbitrary, uninitialized stack value.

For example, a valid access to data exposed through a program’s permitted context is different from an access that steps beyond the allowed region. The verifier tracks pointer information and rejects accesses it cannot establish as valid.

Helper calls and permitted operations

eBPF programs can call kernel-provided helper functions, but they cannot call arbitrary kernel functions. Available helpers vary by program type and use case. The verifier checks call arguments against the helper’s allowed prototype, including the required types and constraints.

What eBPF safety does—and does not—mean

Verification is a form of constrained execution backed by static analysis. It helps prevent classes of hazards such as invalid pointer use, out-of-bounds memory access, and reads from uninitialized stack data. It does not establish that a program’s goal is benign, that its policy is correct, or that every kernel will accept the same program.

A valid program can still have consequential behavior within its permitted scope. For example, an eBPF program attached through Linux Security Module (LSM) hooks can deny an operation or write audit information. Networking programs can filter traffic or take other actions allowed by their type and hook. The LSM BPF documentation describes these security-hook uses.

Where eBPF programs run, and why types matter

Networking and tracing are common examples, but they are not interchangeable interfaces. A program’s type determines its input context, eligible attachment points, and available helpers. When assessing a particular program, identify those details first; “an eBPF program” alone does not specify what it can see or do.

  • Networking: BPF programs can filter or process network-related data at supported hooks. The networking documentation describes relevant program behavior and JIT support.
  • Tracing: Supported tracing program types can run in tracing contexts and expose the operations allowed for those contexts.
  • LSM security hooks: LSM BPF programs can implement access-control decisions or auditing at supported security hooks.

Linux’s classic BPF versus eBPF overview explains the distinction between the older filter and extended BPF facilities. For an actual implementation, consult the documentation for its program type and attachment point rather than assuming that details carry over across types.

Interpreting, JIT compilation, and performance

Once accepted, an eBPF program can run through the interpreter or through just-in-time (JIT) compilation when supported and enabled. JIT availability depends on architecture and kernel configuration; Linux lists support for several architectures in its networking filter documentation. This does not mean every distribution enables JIT or supports every feature identically. JIT support by itself also does not establish a universal performance improvement.

Testing a program is not always the same as running it live

Linux provides a BPF_PROG_RUN facility to test supported program types by supplying an appropriate context and, for network programs, packet data. In ordinary test mode, the system returns the program’s result without carrying out packet redirects or drops. A separate live XDP mode processes packets according to the program’s action, so it should not be treated as an equivalent side-effect-free test. The BPF program test-run documentation explains the distinction.

What to check before using eBPF

  • Kernel and configuration: Program types, helpers, BTF data, and JIT support vary with kernel version, configuration, and architecture. Check the documentation and capabilities of the actual target system.
  • Privileges and loading context: Loading requirements depend on the operation and system. Confirm that the loader has the required privileges and that the intended program type is supported.
  • Effects of the hook: Determine what context the program can access and what actions it can take, particularly when it filters traffic or enforces security policy.
  • Licensing checks: Linux applies licensing checks when loading BPF programs. GPL-only helpers can require GPL-compatible licensing, and the kernel documentation notes additional restrictions for LSM and TCP congestion-control struct_ops cases. Consult the BPF licensing documentation; it is technical guidance, not case-specific legal advice.
