A small VPS can run a static site, a modest web application, or a reverse proxy—but the right configuration depends on what the software actually needs. Choose a supported Linux release, secure SSH and firewall access, install only the required services, and arrange a tested recovery path before relying on the server.

Choose a VPS for the workload, not just the price

Start by listing what you plan to host and what it requires. A static site, a small dynamic application, a reverse proxy, and a database-backed service have different software, memory, storage, and maintenance needs. Compare the plan’s CPU allocation, RAM, storage capacity and type, transfer allowance, and upgrade path against those requirements; a low introductory price alone does not establish that a plan is suitable.

Also check billing term and renewal price, transfer overage policy, IPv4 and IPv6 availability, root and SSH access, whether the service is managed or self-managed, backup and snapshot terms, support, and server location relative to your users. Namecheap’s VPS setup guide publishes two configurations as provider examples: Spark has 1 CPU core, 1 GB RAM, 20 GB SSD storage, and 1 TB bandwidth; Pulsar has 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM, 40 GB SSD storage, and 1 TB bandwidth. These are plan details published by Namecheap in 2026, not universal minimums or independent performance results. Verify current specifications and commercial terms before purchasing. Neither configuration establishes a visitor-per-month capacity.

Choose a supported operating system

Use a currently supported distribution release and follow documentation for that specific release. Ubuntu’s Server documentation covers getting started, networking, security, software updates, storage, web services, and virtualization. It targets the latest LTS release and notes that instructions can differ on older LTS versions. If you choose another distribution, use its current official server documentation instead.

Prepare access and update the server

At deployment, configure or obtain the SSH credentials offered by your host. Keep a way to reach the provider’s recovery console in case a change to SSH or firewall rules cuts off remote access. Use a separate administrative account for routine work rather than logging in as root for everyday tasks.

  1. Connect: Use SSH with the credentials and address supplied by your host. Follow the target distribution’s current instructions for account and authentication setup.
  2. Update packages: Apply available system updates before exposing a new service to the public internet. Package commands and update procedures vary by distribution and release; consult the matching official documentation.
  3. Confirm recovery access: Locate and test how to open the hosting provider’s console before changing remote-access settings.

Namecheap’s guide describes this general setup sequence, but its commands should not be treated as universal across operating systems.

Allow only the network traffic the server needs

Use a minimal firewall policy: permit the services required for the chosen workload and keep other inbound ports closed. A public website typically needs web traffic to reach the server; SSH should be available only as needed for administration. Before enabling restrictive rules, confirm the actual SSH port and that your intended access path will remain permitted. After installing software, review firewall rules so a new service has not opened an unnecessary port.

Install the web stack your application needs

For a basic web-serving role, Nginx is one reasonable option. Namecheap’s setup guide describes it as “lightweight, fast, and widely used”; that is the provider’s characterization, not an independent benchmark. The official Nginx documentation is the reference for configuring it. Apache is another common web-server option. A dynamic application may also need a language runtime and possibly a database.

Install only the components required by your application. Check the selected distribution’s documentation for current package names and instructions, and do not assume one web server or application stack is right for every workload.

Point a domain to the VPS and verify the configuration

For a public site, create or update the appropriate DNS record at the authoritative DNS provider so the hostname resolves to the VPS address. Namecheap’s walkthrough illustrates an A record, but the correct records depend on your address setup and DNS provider; their control panels and procedures differ. Configure the web server for the intended hostname, validate its configuration before applying changes, and then test the site from outside the server. Use the web server’s current documentation for the exact validation and reload procedure.

Set up backups and ongoing maintenance

Arrange backups before placing valuable data on the server. A backup is a recoverable copy intended to preserve data; an on-demand snapshot captures a server state at a point in time. Their behavior and usefulness depend on how the provider implements them, so check retention, storage location, what is included, and how restoration works. Know the restore procedure before you need it.

Keep the operating system patched and periodically review exposed ports, resource use, and whether backups can be restored. Ubuntu’s server documentation includes guidance on security and automatic updates. Provider backup, snapshot, and restore terms vary, so verify the details for the service you choose.
