Inheritance lets a class specialize another class, while exceptions provide a structured way to respond to failures during execution. A reliable design keeps per-object state on instances, uses inheritance only when the subtype relationship is sound, and catches only failures the code can handle.
What are classes and objects in Python?
A class is executable code that creates a new type. Calling that class creates an instance, or object, which can hold its own state in attributes and use methods defined by the class. The Python tutorial describes the purpose directly: “Classes provide a means of bundling data and functionality together.” Python 3.14.8 tutorial: Classes
class Counter:
def __init__(self, start=0):
self.value = start
def increment(self):
self.value += 1
first = Counter()
second = Counter(10)
first.increment()
print(first.value) # 1
print(second.value) # 10
Counter is the class; first and second are separate instances. Each has its own value, so changing one does not change the other.
What is self?
When a method is called through an instance, Python supplies that instance as the method’s first argument. By convention, that parameter is named self. It is not a reserved word: another name is syntactically possible, but self is the clear, standard choice.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Conceptually, first.increment() passes first to the method before any explicitly supplied arguments. That is how the method accesses and changes the state belonging to that particular object.
Class attributes and instance attributes
An instance attribute belongs to one object; a class attribute is defined on the class and can be shared by its instances. If an instance defines an attribute with the same name as a class attribute, the instance’s value is used for that instance.
class Device:
category = "sensor" # class attribute
def __init__(self, name):
self.name = name # instance attribute
Be cautious with mutable class attributes such as lists or dictionaries. If the value is meant to be separate for each object, define it in __init__ instead; otherwise instances may unintentionally modify shared state.
Encapsulation and protecting object state
Python does not generally enforce private access to an object’s data. A leading underscore, as in _balance, signals that an attribute is intended for internal use, but it does not prevent callers from accessing it. When an object must maintain an invariant—for example, a balance that cannot fall below zero—provide methods or properties that validate changes rather than relying on callers to behave correctly.

What are the four pillars of OOP in Python?
Encapsulation, abstraction, inheritance, and polymorphism are common teaching labels for object-oriented design. They are useful ways to discuss design choices, not four special Python mechanisms that the language enforces as a formal framework.
- Encapsulation: Keep related state and behavior together, and define how callers should interact with that state. In Python, access boundaries are primarily conventions and API design.
- Abstraction: Expose the operations a caller needs while keeping implementation details behind them. A small, well-named method can provide this boundary without requiring a special declaration.
- Inheritance: Define a class in terms of one or more base classes, reusing or specializing their behavior.
- Polymorphism: Let different objects work with the same calling code because they provide compatible operations. Python code can use this style without requiring every class to inherit from a single formal interface.
These labels describe design goals; they do not guarantee a design is sound. In particular, exposing mutable state can undermine encapsulation even when it is stored inside a class.
How does inheritance work in Python?
A derived class names one or more base classes. It can use inherited methods, override them with its own implementation, or extend inherited behavior by calling super(). The Python class tutorial covers inheritance, method overriding, and method resolution order.
class Notifier:
def send(self, message):
print(f"Sending: {message}")
class EmailNotifier(Notifier):
def send(self, message):
print("Preparing email")
super().send(message)
Here, EmailNotifier specializes send and then calls the inherited implementation. super() follows Python’s method resolution order (MRO), the order in which Python searches classes for an attribute. That order matters especially with multiple inheritance; it supports cooperative calls through the inheritance chain when participating classes use super() consistently.

When inheritance fits—and when composition is clearer
Use inheritance when the derived object is genuinely a subtype of its base and can stand in for it without breaking expected behavior. Use composition when an object should use another object’s service but is not a kind of that object.
- Inheritance can make shared behavior easy to specialize, but deep or complicated hierarchies can make behavior harder to trace.
- Multiple inheritance is supported, but the MRO and cooperative use of
super()add design constraints. - Composition keeps the relationship explicit: an object holds or receives another object and delegates work to it.
Choose the relationship that best expresses the model, rather than adding inheritance only to reuse a few lines of code.
What is the difference between a syntax error and an exception?
A syntax error is found while Python parses code; the code cannot be executed as written. An exception occurs while syntactically valid code runs—for example, when a program tries to convert invalid text to an integer. Python’s Errors and Exceptions tutorial explains both categories and how exceptions are handled.
# Syntax error: the missing closing parenthesis prevents parsing
# print("hello"
# Runtime exception: valid syntax, but invalid conversion
int("not a number") # ValueError
An unhandled exception normally stops the current execution path and produces a traceback. The traceback is diagnostic context; it is not a substitute for deciding whether the program can recover.

How should you handle exceptions?
Put a try block around an operation that can fail, then catch the narrowest exception types for which that part of the program has a useful response. Handle an error where a meaningful decision can be made; otherwise let it propagate to a caller that can decide what to do.
def read_count(text):
try:
return int(text)
except ValueError as exc:
raise ValueError("count must be a whole number") from exc
This example translates a conversion failure into a more useful message while preserving the original cause with from exc. Preserve that causal chain when adding domain context so debugging does not lose the underlying failure.
Avoid handlers that hide defects
A bare except: or a broad except BaseException: in ordinary application logic may catch failures the code cannot safely recover from, turning a real problem into apparent success. Catch expected exception types, and do not silently discard them. If logging or adding context is all a handler does, re-raise the exception so callers retain control.
Use exception types or structured data to choose a response, not the wording of an exception message. Message text is not a stable API and can change between Python versions.

Use finally or a context manager for cleanup
A finally block runs as control leaves the associated try statement, whether execution succeeded or raised an exception. It is for cleanup; it does not by itself handle or suppress the exception. For resources with documented context-manager support, prefer with, which makes the resource’s cleanup behavior explicit.
with open("notes.txt", encoding="utf-8") as file:
contents = file.read()
The file is managed by the context manager when the block exits, including when reading raises an exception.
When should you create a custom exception?
Create one when callers need a stable, meaningful way to distinguish a failure in your application’s domain. In ordinary cases, derive it from Exception and keep it focused on information a handler needs.
class InvalidOrderError(Exception):
pass
def submit_order(order):
if not order.items:
raise InvalidOrderError("an order must contain at least one item")
Prefer inheriting from one exception type at a time. The built-in exceptions reference notes that implementation details of built-in exceptions can make multiple inheritance problematic.

When do ExceptionGroup and except* help?
Most operations report one failure at a time, for which ordinary try and except are clearer. If concurrent or batch work needs to report several independent failures together, Python provides ExceptionGroup to hold exceptions and except* to handle matching members while unmatched members continue to propagate. See the Python errors and exceptions tutorial for the documented behavior.
Which Python documentation should you use?
The linked tutorial and reference pages are Python 3.14 documentation: the class and errors tutorials are labeled Python 3.14.8, while the built-in exceptions reference is labeled Python 3.14.7. Language behavior and examples can evolve, so check the documentation version you target when details matter. The execution model reference provides further context on how Python handles execution and exceptions.
