IEEE does not accredit engineering programs. It participates in ABET’s accreditation system as a member society, contributing technical expertise and volunteer program evaluators. ABET’s accreditation commissions review programs and make accreditation decisions.
Does IEEE accredit engineering programs?
No. ABET is the accreditor, and its accreditation applies to academic programs—not to individual degrees, departments, colleges, institutions, or people. ABET describes accreditation as quality assurance and states that it is not a ranking system. ABET’s explanation of accreditation spells out that distinction.
IEEE is one of the professional and technical societies in ABET’s federation. It contributes expertise and people to the system, but society participation does not give IEEE authority to grant accreditation.
Who makes ABET accreditation decisions?
ABET’s four accreditation commissions conduct accreditation activities and decide accreditation actions, except appeals. The relevant commission depends on the kind of program and the degree level:

These roles and decision procedures are described in ABET’s 2026–2027 Accreditation Policy and Procedure Manual. For the applicable standards, use the current 2026–2027 engineering criteria or 2026–2027 engineering technology criteria. The criteria are separate, and program title and commission determine which requirements apply.
What does IEEE contribute?
Volunteer program evaluators
IEEE supplies volunteer program evaluators who assess programs against ABET criteria. Evaluators take part in program reviews and visits; they provide professional judgment and evidence-based findings for the accreditation process, rather than independently awarding accreditation. IEEE Spectrum’s account of IEEE’s role also describes a volunteer path through IEEE committees that can lead to possible service on an ABET commission.

Society and committee participation
IEEE participates in accreditation-related society and committee work. Along with other ABET member societies, it contributes discipline-specific knowledge that can inform criteria. That input helps make requirements relevant to particular fields, while the commissions retain accreditation decision authority.
How do societies help shape ABET criteria?
ABET’s policy manual sets a formal process for proposing new or revised Program Criteria. Member societies and commissions develop criteria; proposals can involve consultation with affected communities and other assigned societies, commission review, and approval by the relevant Area Delegation. A society can therefore contribute subject-matter expertise without owning the final criteria approval or the accreditation decision.

For engineering programs, the EAC criteria combine general requirements with Program Criteria where applicable. The 2026–2027 general criteria address students, program educational objectives, student outcomes, continuous improvement, curriculum, faculty, facilities, and institutional support. They require documented assessment and evaluation, with results used to inform improvement; they do not prescribe one universal course list.
The engineering technology criteria likewise distinguish General Criteria from Program Criteria. The official program title determines whether particular Program Criteria apply. Because criteria and policies may change between accreditation cycles, consult the edition for the cycle in question rather than relying on an older summary.

What ABET accreditation does—and does not—mean
- It applies to a program. Accreditation is not a certification of an individual engineer or a blanket accreditation of the institution.
- It is quality assurance, not a ranking. An accredited program has been evaluated against applicable ABET criteria; accreditation should not be read as a ranking of schools.
- It reflects shared participation with distinct authority. IEEE and other societies contribute expertise and volunteers; ABET commissions make accreditation decisions.
How extensive is IEEE’s participation?
IEEE Spectrum reported in 2025 that ABET accredited more than 4,770 programs at 930 colleges and universities across 42 countries and regions, and that IEEE served as lead society for 877 programs. The same article reported about 380 IEEE evaluators and 26 IEEE commissioners serving on ABET’s EAC and ETAC. These are figures reported by IEEE Spectrum, not independently verified current ABET totals; counts can change.
