If XAMPP will not install on Linux Mint, run its downloaded Linux installer from a terminal with execute permission. If it installs but Apache or MySQL will not start, check for an already-running system service and read XAMPP’s Apache error log. The exact cause depends on the error and your Mint setup; the checks below separate the common stages.
Install XAMPP on Linux Mint
Apache Friends documents a Linux installer workflow that applies to Linux generally. Its FAQ does not provide a compatibility guarantee for every Linux Mint release. A Mint-specific tutorial demonstrates an older example—Mint 20.2 with XAMPP 7.2.4—but that historical version is not a current download recommendation. - In a browser, download the Linux installer from Apache Friends. In the commands below, replace the wildcard pattern with the installer’s actual filename.
- Open a terminal in the directory containing the downloaded file. Grant it execute permission:
chmod 755 xampp-linux-*-installer.run - Run the installer with administrator privileges:
sudo ./xampp-linux-*-installer.runEnter your password if prompted, then follow the installer windows. The documented installation location is
/opt/lampp.
If a double-click does nothing, launching the file from a terminal can expose an error message that is otherwise hidden. Confirm that the filename and current directory match the downloaded installer before retrying.
Start XAMPP and check localhost
After installation, start the stack from a terminal:

sudo /opt/lampp/lampp startThen open http://localhost in your regular browser. A working local web server should display the XAMPP start page. Opening localhost in the browser is a separate check from launching XAMPP’s graphical manager.
If Apache or MySQL will not start
Check for an existing service conflict
A system Apache or MySQL daemon that is already running can prevent XAMPP from starting its corresponding service. Check the status of services and processes on your machine, and determine what is using the relevant service or port. Do not stop or disable an existing service until you know whether another project depends on it. Apache Friends discusses this conflict in its Linux troubleshooting FAQ.

Read Apache’s error log
If Apache fails and the terminal output does not explain why, Apache Friends recommends checking the last two lines of its log:
tail -2 /opt/lampp/logs/error_logUse the actual message to guide the next diagnostic step; there is no single fix for every startup failure. The FAQ also describes a specific “Cannot restore segment prot after reloc: Permission denied?” error in relation to some distributions. That message alone is not a reason to disable a security control on Linux Mint; investigate the exact system and use a distribution-appropriate solution.

When the graphical manager or browser behaves differently
The XAMPP FAQ documents a graphical manager under /opt/lampp, but a recent Linux Mint XFCE user report describes a browser-opening problem when launching the manager with elevated privileges and also mentions a system Apache conflict. It is one user’s report, not evidence of a general Mint defect. If the manager fails to open a browser, try checking http://localhost directly in your normal browser; the manager’s browser action and the local web server are distinct. Keep XAMPP for local development
Apache Friends says XAMPP is intended for development, not production, and warns that its default settings have security weaknesses. Its FAQ documents a security check you can run with:

sudo /opt/lampp/lampp securityDo not expose phpMyAdmin to outside access as a way to solve an installation or startup problem: Apache Friends warns that allowing external access creates significant risk. XAMPP is a bundled stack; using individually installed distribution packages is another approach, but the right choice depends on your existing services and project needs. The available evidence does not establish that one approach is best for every Mint user.

To narrow down a failure, note the Linux Mint release and desktop edition, the XAMPP installer filename, the exact error text, and the output of the start command. For an Apache startup failure, include the relevant output from /opt/lampp/logs/error_log. Those details distinguish an installer launch problem from a service conflict or a later Apache error.
