“Copy data virtualization” is not a consistently standardized term. It may mean data virtualization—querying data through a unified access layer while it remains in its source systems—or refer to virtual-copy techniques in copy data management (CDM). Those are different approaches to different problems: one unifies access across data sources; the other manages operational copies of production data.

What is data virtualization?

Data virtualization provides an abstracted way to access data held in different systems. Instead of first building a separate integrated copy, a consumer queries a virtual layer that connects to the underlying sources. The layer can present a common view while concealing some differences in source location and technical interface. This is the usual meaning when someone says “data virtualization.” See TechTarget’s definition, SAP’s documentation and IBM’s documentation.

How data virtualization works

A consumer sends a query to the virtual interface. The service uses metadata and connector details to identify relevant sources, then translates or splits the query into requests those sources can handle. It combines the returned results for the consumer. Depending on the implementation, operations such as filters may be pushed down to a source, so that system processes some of the work near its own data. AWS, SAP and Salesforce describe versions of this pattern; their descriptions are implementation examples, not a guarantee that every product follows an identical sequence.

For example, AWS describes a metadata layer and query decomposition in its data virtualization explainer. SAP documents federation and pushdown in its data virtualization guidance. Salesforce describes runtime queries in which filters, sort orders and limits from SOQL are translated into requests to an external system in its architecture guide.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A virtual view does not necessarily store a copy of the underlying rows. IBM describes a semantic layer across physical sources without moving or copying their data. In Salesforce’s external-data pattern, an External Object describes an external schema and Salesforce sends queries to the source at runtime. These examples illustrate federation, but do not establish that every product is strictly zero-copy: caching, replication or materialization may be part of a broader design. Azure SQL Database documents another, narrower case: a Preview capability for querying certain external files in place, in read-only mode. See Microsoft Learn.

How is copy data virtualization different from copy data management?

Copy data management (CDM) is about managing multiple operational copies of production data, not providing a federated access layer across unrelated source systems. A CDM approach may keep a virtual full copy and represent later unique changes as incremental, block-level snapshots. The aim is to reduce redundant full copies while making point-in-time copies available for reuse or recovery. See TechTarget’s CDM definition.

The terms are easier to distinguish by asking what is being unified and where the data resides:

Approach What is unified or virtualized? Where data lives Typical goal
Data virtualization Access to data across source systems Usually remains in source systems for federated queries Provide a unified view without a separate replicated integration copy
Copy data management Operational copies of production data In a managed copy or snapshot environment Reduce redundant full copies while enabling reuse or recovery
Data replication or ETL A destination dataset assembled from source data A destination receives a copy Build a dataset for analytics, integration or another workload

This is a conceptual distinction, not a claim that all vendors implement each category identically. SAP contrasts remote federation without physical movement with replication patterns in its integration use-case patterns.

What to check before choosing a virtualization approach

Data virtualization can avoid creating a new persistent integration copy in a federated design, but it does not remove the operational dependencies of querying source systems. The right fit depends on the workload and product capabilities, not on an assumption that virtualization is always faster, cheaper or fresher.

  • Access model: Determine whether queries are live and federated, served from a cache, or backed by replicated or materialized data.
  • Sources and connectors: Check that the product supports the systems and data formats you need, and understand what each connector can do.
  • Query behavior: Confirm which operations can be pushed down and how the design behaves under your workload. The cited sources do not provide a comparable performance benchmark.
  • Read and write support: Verify whether the specific integration is read-only or supports writes. The Azure SQL Database external-file capability cited above is read-only and in Preview; that is not a general rule for all virtualization products.
  • Security and governance: Review permissions across the virtualization layer and source systems, along with data-residency and governance requirements.
  • Source dependency: Consider what happens to query access if a source or connector is unavailable, and whether its response time suits the workload.

Examples show why capability must be checked per implementation: SAP documents federation and connectors; Salesforce describes runtime external queries; and Azure documents a specific read-only Preview feature. None alone establishes a universal capability for every product in its category.

Which meaning should you use?

If the question is how to present and query data across systems without first consolidating it into a new store, say data virtualization or, when accurate, data federation. If it concerns reducing redundant production copies and maintaining point-in-time snapshots, say copy data management. Use “copy data virtualization” only when the speaker or product defines what it means; without that context, the phrase can refer to either concept.
