You can research competitors’ public app-store listings without paying for an intelligence API: search public catalog results, inspect each listing, and keep dated, storefront-specific notes. That gives you evidence about positioning, visible monetization cues, ratings, reviews, and listing changes—not competitors’ verified downloads, revenue, or market share.
What app-store intelligence can you collect for free?
Public listings let you record what a potential customer can see in a particular storefront at a particular time. Useful observations include an app’s name and publisher, category, description, screenshots or video, displayed price and in-app purchase or subscription language, rating and review count, and any visible version or update information.
These are listing facts, not performance metrics. A high rating or a polished listing does not establish installs, revenue, conversion, retention, customer acquisition cost, or market share. Apple describes sales and developer analytics as App Store Connect resources; Google’s reviewed developer APIs are likewise account-oriented rather than a documented, free competitor-performance feed. How to build a no-subscription research workflow
1. Define a consistent market slice
Before searching, write down the country or storefront, the category or user problem, the search terms, and the date. Keep storefront, language, and query consistent when comparing apps; results and localized metadata can vary by market. 2. Find candidate apps
For Apple catalog discovery, the archived iTunes Search API documents public App Store search and ID-based lookup. Search construction uses parameters including term, country, entity, and limit; results are JSON, and software-related entities can return app listings. Retain the store ID and listing URL so you can verify observations on the product page. Apple’s overview says the API lets websites search content in the App Store and other Apple storefronts. Apple also documents a Search Apps API in its Apple Ads materials for finding public apps by name or content provider and retrieving localized metadata. For Google Play, inspect public listings in a browser and record the package name and listing URL. 3. Record comparable fields
Use one row or record per app. Note the storefront and observation date alongside the listing details; write “not shown” when a field is absent rather than guessing.

- Rating and review count as displayed, plus a few representative review themes.
- Visible version or release/update information.
Apple says ratings and reviews appear on product pages and in search results and may influence search rank. Search experiences can also include categories, editorial content, in-app events, and custom product pages, so the standard listing is not necessarily the only presentation a user encounters. 4. Compare what the listings actually show
Look for differences in intended audience and problem, the promise made in the first lines of copy, feature framing, visual presentation, monetization cues, recurring review themes, and apparent listing freshness. Keep interpretation separate from observation: for example, record that a subscription is mentioned, but do not infer how many users subscribe.

5. Repeat the same observations over time
Re-run the same queries weekly or monthly and save dated snapshots. Comparing descriptions, screenshots, ratings, review counts, and visible release information creates a qualitative change log. It cannot reconstruct past downloads, historical rankings, or revenue.
Apple’s archived iTunes Search API documentation advises caching for large websites and gives an approximate rate of 20 calls per minute, explicitly subject to change. Treat that as a provisional implementation detail, not a guaranteed current limit; check the current documentation, applicable terms, and actual service behavior before automating collection. Can you see competitors’ downloads for free?
The official sources cited here do not provide a free, broad feed of competitors’ downloads or revenue. Apple documents sales and analytics through App Store Connect, and the reviewed Google Play API material describes authorized developer-account operations. That is a limit of these official sources; it does not establish that no third-party data source exists. Do not convert visible ratings, review counts, search results, or listing changes into download or revenue estimates without separate evidence.
Use owner analytics for your own app
If the question is how your app is performing, use the developer tools tied to your own account rather than public listing snapshots. App Store Connect provides app management, analytics, sales reporting, and customer-review resources. Google Play’s developer APIs support authorized workflows for an owner’s apps and reviews.
