Hard disk specifications describe a drive’s capacity, physical size, connection, recording format, performance and intended workload. They are not a single measure of quality. To choose or replace a drive, first confirm that it fits the device and that the device supports its interface and sector format; then compare capacity and workload-relevant performance.
What hard disk specifications tell you
A hard disk listing combines physical details, compatibility requirements and performance or usage ratings. A drive with ample capacity can still be incompatible with a computer, NAS, server or enclosure. Read each figure in the context of the exact model and the host device.
Physical fit and compatibility
Capacity
Capacity is the maker’s stated storage size for a model. The device may have a supported-capacity limit, so check its documentation before buying. Advertised capacity, formatted capacity and the space reported by an operating system may differ; there is no single usable-capacity conversion that applies to every drive and system.
Form factor and dimensions
Form factor describes the drive’s physical size category, not its connection type. Product listings commonly distinguish 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drives; enterprise listings may use the terms small form factor (SFF) and large form factor (LFF). Check the drive bay, dimensions, mounting points and any required carrier against the device documentation. See HPE’s HDD portfolio and Toshiba’s MG09 Series specifications for examples.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Interface
The interface is how the drive connects to the system. SATA and SAS are distinct interfaces; a bay or controller must support the drive’s interface. For example, Toshiba specifies MG09 models with either SATA 6.0 Gbit/s or SAS 12.0 Gbit/s. Those interface options do not mean every host supports both. Confirm the exact drive and host combination rather than assuming that a matching capacity or connector shape is enough.
Sector format
Sector format describes how the drive organizes data at the sector level. Listings may specify 512-byte sectors, 512e or 4Kn. Toshiba’s MG09 models are available with 512e or 4Kn, while its DT02 Series lists 512e. Check the exact drive’s format against the host operating system, controller and other software; older systems may not support every format. See the Toshiba DT02 Series specifications.

Performance specifications
RPM
RPM means revolutions per minute: the spindle’s rotational speed in a mechanical hard drive. Manufacturer listings include drives at different speeds—for instance, HPE portfolio examples include 7,200 RPM and 10,000 RPM, while Toshiba examples include 5,400 RPM for DT02 and 7,200 RPM for MG09 and X300. RPM is one part of performance, not a complete prediction of how quickly a drive will handle a particular task.
Throughput, IOPS and latency
Throughput describes data transferred over time, often for sequential operations such as copying a large file. IOPS means input/output operations per second and is more relevant to patterns involving many smaller, scattered requests. Latency concerns the time taken to respond to an operation. Compare the metric that reflects your workload, and use figures only for the exact model and stated conditions. HPE’s QuickSpecs provide examples of sequential throughput and random IOPS for particular SKUs; they are not a uniform cross-brand benchmark. An interface’s signaling rate is not the drive’s sustained media throughput.

Cache or buffer
Cache, sometimes called buffer, is temporary onboard memory. Some product listings, including Seagate’s Desktop HDD specifications, state a cache size. Cache capacity alone does not establish a drive’s overall speed.
Recording technology and intended workload
CMR and SMR
CMR and SMR are different magnetic recording methods. The distinction can matter for workloads with frequent writes or drive rebuilds. Toshiba identifies MG09 as CMR and DT02 as drive-managed SMR; these are model-specific facts, not labels that can be applied to every drive from either maker. Check the recording method for the exact model you are considering.

Workload rating and product class
A workload rating or product class helps describe the use a manufacturer intends or rates a drive for. HPE’s portfolio groups products as mission-critical, business-critical and entry, with differences in stated workloads and other specifications. Toshiba lists a workload rating of 550 total terabytes transferred per year for MG09. Treat such ratings as manufacturer- and model-specific limits or guidance, not a universal measure of reliability.
Match the drive to its maker’s stated use case—such as desktop, surveillance, NAS, backup or enterprise use—rather than choosing on capacity alone. Recording method and workload rating can be especially relevant when a drive will see repeated writes or rebuild activity.

Other specifications that may matter
- Power: Check power requirements where energy use, heat or the host’s power budget is important. Manufacturer figures apply to particular models and conditions.
- Noise and temperature: These can matter in a quiet desktop, a densely packed server or an environment with limited cooling. Compare model-specific figures if the manufacturer provides them.
- Warranty: Warranty terms vary by model and seller or region. Read the applicable terms rather than assuming a category-wide duration.
- Reliability metrics: If a manufacturer states an MTBF or MTTF figure, treat it as a model-specific statistical metric, not a promise that an individual drive will last that number of hours.
How to compare two hard drives
- Confirm compatibility: Check the device’s bay dimensions and form factor, supported interface, sector format, capacity limit and any carrier or mounting requirements. Use documentation for the exact computer, NAS, server or enclosure.
- Match the workload: Check the manufacturer’s intended use and workload rating. Consider recording technology if the drive will handle frequent writes or rebuilds.
- Choose capacity: Allow for the space your use requires and verify that the host supports the drive’s stated capacity. Do not assume the full advertised figure will appear as usable space.
- Compare relevant performance measures: For large-file transfers, look for sequential throughput; for mixed or scattered access, look for random IOPS and latency where available. Do not use RPM or cache size as a standalone speed verdict.
- Check operating constraints: Compare power, noise, temperature, warranty and reliability figures when they matter to the installation, keeping each figure tied to its model and stated conditions.
Portfolio categories and capacities are not universal industry limits. For example, HPE’s cited QuickSpecs list business-critical models up to 26 TB, but that is a detail of its portfolio, not a maximum capacity for all hard drives.
