Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →It depends on the iframe’s origin and whether you control its code. If the frame is same-origin, the parent page can listen for clicks inside its document and identify the nearest link. If it is cross-origin, the parent cannot inspect its DOM; the iframe must report the click with postMessage() or a provider-supported callback. Without either kind of cooperation, the parent cannot reliably discover the exact link.
Check the iframe’s origin and integration options
Start with three questions: Is the iframe same-origin with the parent page? Can you change the embedded page’s code? Do you need the actual link URL, or only a signal that someone interacted with the frame?
The browser’s same-origin policy determines whether parent-page JavaScript can read the iframe document. A different origin prevents ordinary DOM access; see MDN’s <iframe> reference. The available approaches are:
| Situation | Can the parent get the link? | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Same-origin frame | Yes, subject to sandbox and navigation behavior | Listen for clicks on the frame document and find the nearest link. |
| Cross-origin frame; embedded code is controllable | Yes, if the frame reports the click | Send a structured message with postMessage(); validate it in the parent. |
| Cross-origin frame; provider supplies a callback | Usually, according to that integration’s contract | Use the documented provider event. |
| Cross-origin frame; no code access or callback | No reliable exact-link access | Request a supported integration or change the embedding flow. |
For a same-origin iframe, listen inside its document
Attach a delegated click listener after the iframe loads. A capture listener on the document can find an enclosing <a href> even when the click lands on an icon or a <span> inside the link.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
const frame = document.querySelector("iframe");
frame.addEventListener("load", () => {
const frameDocument = frame.contentDocument;
if (!frameDocument) return;
frameDocument.addEventListener("click", (event) => {
const target = event.target;
if (!(target instanceof frame.contentWindow.Element)) return;
const link = target.closest("a[href]");
if (!link) return;
console.log("Clicked link:", link.href);
}, true);
});
This pattern assumes the frame document is same-origin and accessible. When the iframe navigates, its document is replaced, so attach the listener again after each load. A sandbox can affect origin and script access; check the actual sandbox configuration rather than assuming normal same-origin access applies.
The listener identifies a click event and its link target; it does not prove that navigation completed. A handler may cancel or redirect the navigation. If you only need to know that the frame surface received a click, a listener on the iframe element in the parent can sometimes provide a generic interaction signal, but it cannot identify the internal link and may not cover keyboard navigation. Use an in-frame listener when the destination matters.

For a cross-origin iframe, have it report the click
The parent cannot read a cross-origin frame’s document. If you control the embedded page, its own code can detect the link and send the relevant data to the parent with window.parent.postMessage(). MDN describes cross-origin communication with Window.postMessage().
In the iframe, send only the information the parent needs and specify the parent’s exact origin when you know it:

// Inside the iframe, after identifying clickedLink:
window.parent.postMessage(
{ type: "iframe-link-click", href: clickedLink.href },
"https://host.example"
);
In the parent, check the sender’s origin, the specific iframe window, and the message’s structure before using its contents:
const frame = document.querySelector("iframe");
const allowedFrameOrigin = "https://embed.example";
window.addEventListener("message", (event) => {
if (event.origin !== allowedFrameOrigin) return;
if (event.source !== frame.contentWindow) return;
const data = event.data;
if (!data || data.type !== "iframe-link-click" || typeof data.href !== "string") return;
console.log("Reported iframe link:", data.href);
});
These snippets illustrate the message pattern; adapt the origins and message schema to your deployment. Do not use "*" as the target origin when you can specify the exact parent origin. Validate the payload as well as the sender: a message is input from another window, not proof of a trusted click. See the MDN security guidance for postMessage() and the HTML Standard’s web messaging guidance.

If you do not control the iframe
Look for a documented callback or event from the iframe provider and follow its contract. If none exists, ask the provider to add one or redesign the flow; ordinary parent-page JavaScript cannot reliably read the exact clicked link from a cross-origin iframe’s DOM.
Also interpret a report narrowly: it means the iframe code observed a click event, not that navigation succeeded or that a human initiated it. Navigation can happen without a user click, and scripts can generate events.
