To improve your chances of being considered for a developer role, make your relevant skills easy to find, show concrete evidence of your work, build useful professional connections, and prepare for the specific employer’s interview process. These are recruiter recommendations, not a guaranteed formula: hiring practices differ by company, role, and career stage.
Make your application easy to find and assess
Atlassian senior tech recruiters Matt Langan and Christian Macolino advise candidates to keep current, relevant information visible in the online profiles recruiters search. Macolino put it this way: “A recruiter’s ability to find the talent is largely based on the data that we can search.” The practical implication is to surface the technologies and experience that match the opening, rather than relying on a generic profile or polished presentation that obscures fit. SitePoint’s interview with the recruiters was published in 2015 and updated in November 2024.
- Put the most relevant skills and experience where a recruiter can locate them quickly.
- Tailor the evidence you emphasize to the role’s stated needs, and be ready to discuss it honestly.
- Make portfolio or project links easy to reach and check that they work.
There is no single resume format or personal website that the recruiters establish as mandatory. A portfolio is useful when it helps an employer evaluate work; it is not automatically better than a conventional resume.
Choose evidence that fits your career stage and target role
If you are early in your career
When professional experience is limited, projects and community work can make learning and initiative more visible. Langan recommends side projects, blogging, forums, Stack Overflow or GitHub participation, coding competitions, and tech meetups. These activities can give you material to discuss and demonstrate, but they do not replace professional experience in every hiring context.

If you have professional experience
Use work examples to show the scope of your contribution, the skills relevant to the opening, and how you collaborated or solved problems. Focus on what a reviewer needs to understand about your fit, rather than listing every tool you have encountered.
Decide whether a portfolio is worth the effort
A portfolio can be especially helpful when it gives a reviewer direct evidence that is otherwise difficult to assess. The SitePoint recruiters suggest it may be more valuable at smaller firms with fewer ways to evaluate candidates. That is a context-dependent observation, not a rule about company size. Match the portfolio’s depth to the target role and the employer’s assessment process.

Build visibility through useful relationships
Professional visibility can come from contributing to developer communities, open-source projects, forums, or meetups, as well as from conversations with people familiar with a target team. Microsoft recruiters recommend contacting people connected to the organization to learn about its team and role; a contact may also help route an application to the relevant recruiter or hiring manager. This is one way to gain information and visibility, not a shortcut or promise of an interview.
When you contact someone or a recruiter, explain clearly how your experience relates to the opening. Microsoft recruiter Amy Ala advises that communication with recruiters or hiring managers should make the candidate’s fit clear. Ask focused questions about the team or process, and represent your skills accurately. Microsoft talent sourcer Kameron Swinton summarizes the value of honesty: “Knowledge can be learned, but trust must be earned.” These recommendations reflect Microsoft recruiting advice published in 2015, so follow the current instructions for the role you are pursuing. Prepare for the interview the employer will actually conduct
Interview formats vary. Before practicing, check the employer’s instructions and find out whether the process includes coding, system design, behavioral questions, or another assessment. The company-specific guidance below illustrates useful preparation, not a universal interview script.
Practice explaining and testing your code
Amazon’s recruiter guidance for software development engineer interviews emphasizes writing scalable, robust, well-tested code. It recommends syntactically correct code, considering edge cases, asking clarifying questions, and explaining your reasoning. Prepare examples of collaboration and problem-solving
Have specific examples ready that show how you worked with others, handled a difficult problem, or contributed to an outcome. Explain your part clearly and accurately. Prepare questions for the interviewer, and keep your recruiter informed about other interview processes or deadlines when that affects your timing. These points appear in Microsoft’s recruiter advice, which dates to 2015; use the current employer’s guidance as the authority for its process.

The same report found year-over-year growth in 2024 hiring activity on HackerRank’s platform of 22% for lead developers, 19% for senior developers, 9% for junior developers, and 7% for entry-level hiring. These are platform activity signals, not a universal count of vacancies or a measure of how likely any one applicant is to be hired. Taken together, the figures support a practical response: target openings carefully and make relevant evidence easy for each employer to evaluate.
Use interview resources as one part of preparation
