In PHP, $this refers to the object whose instance method is running, and -> accesses a member of that object. For example, $this->name reads a property, while $this->save() calls a method.
How $this-> works
It is not one special operator: $this is PHP’s pseudo-variable for the current object, and -> is the object operator. The PHP Manual describes $this as the value of the calling object. It is available inside a class method when that method is called in an object context. PHP Manual: Properties

echo $user->greeting(); // Hello, AdaWhen greeting() runs on $user, $this->name reads the name property belonging to that particular object. If another User object has a different name, its method call reads that object’s value instead.
Property access versus method calls
The member after -> can be a property or a method. Parentheses distinguish a method call from a property access:

PHP determines whether it accesses a property or invokes a method from the expression context. PHP Manual: The Basics
Why $this is unavailable in a static method
A static method is associated with the class rather than a particular object. Because it can be called without an object instance, there is no current object for $this to refer to, so $this is unavailable inside methods declared static. PHP Manual: Static Keyword

Static properties are accessed with ::, not ->. For example, self::$count refers to a static property named $count on the class. Instance properties and static properties serve different purposes: one belongs to an individual object, the other to the class.
When a receiver might be null
If a value before -> may be null, PHP 8.0.0 and later support the nullsafe operator, ?->. If the receiver is null, the expression evaluates to null and skips the remainder of the chain. For example, $user?->profile?->name safely returns null if $user or its profile is null. PHP Manual: The Basics

Use nullsafe access when null is a valid possibility and you want that result to propagate. It does not create a missing object or make every error safe; if a null receiver indicates a bug, handle or diagnose that condition instead.
Visibility still applies
Using $this does not bypass PHP’s visibility rules. A property or method declared public, protected, or private can only be accessed from the locations allowed by its visibility. PHP Manual: Visibility

Can you assign a value to $this?
No. $this represents the current object; it is not a variable you can replace with another object. The PHP variable documentation notes that indirect assignment to $this was possible before PHP 7.1.0, but that historical exception does not make it assignable in current PHP. Quick troubleshooting
- If PHP reports that
$thisis unavailable, check whether the code is inside a method declaredstaticor is otherwise outside an object-context method. - If you intended to read a value, check that you used a property name without parentheses, as in
$this->email. - If you intended to run behavior, check that you used a method name with parentheses, as in
$this->sendEmail(). - If a chained expression fails, identify which receiver may be
null; use?->only when null is an expected value.
