There is no universal rule that the first object submitted to a game engine appears behind everything else. The engine prepares visible work, organizes it into rendering passes or queues, and uses depth testing and sorting rules to determine which pixels end up on screen. Opaque objects and blended transparency follow different rules, and the exact controls depend on the engine and render pipeline.

What “draw order” means

Draw order is the sequence in which an engine submits rendering work to the GPU. It is not always a simple list of objects, and submission order does not by itself determine the final image. The engine may first remove objects that cannot contribute to the camera’s view, group remaining work by rendering needs, and use depth information to decide which surfaces are visible.

That distinction matters because rendering has two goals: produce the correct image and do so efficiently. An opaque object can often be submitted before another object without appearing on top of it, because depth testing rejects hidden pixels. Blended transparency is different: its color is combined with what has already been drawn, so its position in the sequence usually matters.

How a frame becomes draw calls

1. Cull work the camera cannot use

Before rendering, engines can remove objects outside the camera view, beyond a distance limit, or hidden behind other geometry. Unreal Engine 5.8 documents scene preparation that includes distance and camera-visibility culling as well as occlusion testing before remaining work proceeds to rendering (Epic Games’ Unreal Engine rendering overview).

2. Organize visible work into passes

Rendering is commonly split into passes or queues for different kinds of work. A pass may establish depth, draw opaque geometry, render a skybox, or handle transparency. Grouping work with shared properties, such as a mesh and material, can also reduce the cost of submitting it.

Unreal’s overview describes an early depth pass intended to reduce repeated pixel work, known as overdraw, followed by GPU draw calls for geometry. These are examples of pipeline decisions, not a fixed sequence shared by every engine.

3. Test depth for opaque surfaces

A depth buffer, also called a Z-buffer, keeps depth information for pixels as geometry is drawn. When a new opaque fragment is tested, the GPU can reject it if a closer surface already occupies that pixel. The visible image therefore depends on depth as well as submission order.

Why opaque objects do not need painter’s order

For opaque geometry, the engine can commonly use depth testing to determine which surface wins at each pixel. Godot’s GPU optimization documentation explains that opaque 3D objects can essentially be rendered in any order because the Z-buffer ensures that only the foremost objects are shaded (Godot’s GPU optimization guide).

Order still matters for performance. Drawing nearer opaque geometry earlier can let the GPU reject pixels from farther geometry before spending as much work shading them. Unity’s built-in rendering pipeline, for example, uses front-to-back opaque sorting by default for render queue indices through 2500. This is a pipeline optimization, not a rule that nearer objects must always be submitted first in all engines.

Why transparent objects usually need back-to-front sorting

Blending combines a transparent surface with the color already behind it. If a nearer blended surface is drawn first, a farther one drawn afterward may blend over it, producing the wrong result. The usual approximation is therefore to draw farther transparent objects before nearer ones, often called painter’s order.

This approach has limits. Sorting an entire object by one representative position cannot always correctly order intersecting or overlapping pieces of geometry. Godot’s documentation says transparent objects are drawn after opaque ones and sorted back-to-front using each Node3D position rather than every vertex position. Overlapping objects can consequently appear in an unexpected order. Godot offers material Render Priority and VisualInstance3D Sorting Offset as adjustments, but notes that they may not resolve every case (Godot’s 3D rendering limitations).

Transparency also has a performance cost: overlapping transparent surfaces can cause the same screen pixels to be processed repeatedly. Godot’s GPU optimization guidance discusses this fill-rate cost, so adding blended layers can affect performance as well as sorting (Godot’s GPU optimization guide).

Unity built-in pipeline: queues and their order

Unity’s Unity 6.0 manual for the built-in render pipeline documents named render queues. Queue membership determines broad ordering, while sorting inside a queue determines order among objects in that queue. These values should not be assumed to describe every Unity render pipeline or other engines.

The Unity manual places the skybox after opaque geometry and before transparent geometry. By default, queue indices through 2500 use front-to-back opaque sorting; from 2501 upward, Unity uses the camera’s transparency sort mode by default. Cameras can change applicable sorting behavior. See Unity’s built-in rendering-order documentation for the documented queue and sorting behavior.

Unity 2D: control which sprite appears on top

In Unity 2D, Sorting Layer groups renderers into priority layers, and Order in Layer determines priority within a layer. Unity’s 2023.3 manual lists the general sorting considerations in this order:

  1. Sorting Layer and Order in Layer
  2. Render queue
  3. Distance to the camera, which can depend on projection, a custom axis, or the sprite sort point
  4. Sorting Group
  5. Material or shader
  6. An internal tiebreaker

A Sorting Group makes renderers under a shared root act together for sorting purposes. For isometric tilemaps, Unity documents a custom-axis sort mode. The internal tiebreaker cannot be controlled, so assign distinct layer or order priorities wherever a particular overlap is important. These controls and their priority are described in Unity’s 2D Sorting manual.

Diagnose the kind of ordering problem

A transparent object appears in front of the wrong one

This is usually a transparency-sorting problem. Check whether the material uses blending and how the engine determines the object’s sort position. If geometry overlaps or intersects, object-level sorting may be incapable of producing a correct order for every pixel. In Godot, render priority or sorting offset may help, but the documented limitation means they are not guaranteed fixes.

Two nearly coplanar surfaces flicker

This is likely Z-fighting, not transparency sorting. It happens when distinct surfaces map to the same depth-buffer value; the depth buffer has finite precision, and the visible winner can flicker as the camera moves. Godot’s documentation identifies near and far clipping distances as factors to adjust, with the near plane having more effect on depth precision. Separating the surfaces can also avoid assigning them the same depth (Godot’s 3D rendering limitations).

A cutout texture sorts like a glass surface

If a texture is mostly fully opaque or fully transparent, blending may be unnecessary. Godot recommends considering alpha scissor for this cutout-like case; its documentation says this mode is faster and avoids transparency-sorting issues. It is not suitable for genuinely semi-transparent regions. For those, a depth pre-pass or alpha hash can sometimes help, with trade-offs (Godot’s 3D rendering limitations).

The image is correct, but rendering is slow

Look for overdraw: multiple layers may be processed for the same screen pixels, especially with overlapping transparent surfaces. Culling can avoid work for objects that cannot affect the view, while depth passes and front-to-back opaque sorting can reduce unnecessary shading. These are performance strategies; they do not replace correct material and sorting settings.

So, who gets drawn first?

The answer depends on what is being rendered and which engine pipeline is in use. The engine first filters and organizes work; opaque visibility is commonly resolved per pixel by depth testing, while blended transparency is generally sorted back-to-front and remains vulnerable to overlap limitations. For a specific scene, identify whether the issue is opaque depth, blended transparency, a 2D sorting priority, or Z-fighting before changing draw order.
