This guide covers the documented Paperclip AI API workflow; the official documentation does not provide steps for uploading an issue attachment through the web interface.
What you need before uploading
- The company ID and issue ID. The API also accepts a human-readable issue identifier, such as
PAP-39, on issue-scoped routes. - An API bearer token with access to the relevant company and issue.
- A non-empty file whose size and content type are permitted by the instance’s server configuration.
Paperclip documents one file per attachment request. The upload endpoint and accepted fields are described in the Issues API reference.
Upload a file to an issue
Send the file as multipart form data. Replace the placeholders with your instance’s API base URL, company and issue identifiers, token, and local file path:

Attach the upload to a comment
If the file should be associated with a particular issue comment, add the comment’s ID as another multipart field:

Find and open an uploaded attachment
List the issue’s attachments using the relevant issue API route, then use the paths returned in the attachment metadata. Paperclip distinguishes paths for inline content or opening from a path that forces a download. Add ?download=1 when you need the response treated as a download rather than displayed inline.
The content endpoint supports HTTP Range requests, including 206 Partial Content responses for supported byte-range requests. This can support media seeking or streaming, though behavior also depends on the client and any proxies between it and Paperclip.

File limits and rejected uploads
The API rejects empty files, files larger than the server’s configured limit, and content types that are not in the instance’s allowed-upload set. The reviewed issue API documentation does not give one universal maximum size; check the configuration of the Paperclip instance you are using rather than assuming a fixed limit.
The documentation lists common image formats, PDF, plain text, JSON, CSV, HTML, ZIP, and MP4, WebM, and QuickTime video as default allowed types. Administrators can configure the list with PAPERCLIP_ALLOWED_ATTACHMENT_TYPES. Confirm the deployed instance’s actual settings if an upload fails.

Paperclip can preview supported inline types, while ?download=1 requests a forced download. SVG content is served with a sandboxed content security policy. The API documentation also describes inferred video MIME types for certain extensions when a file arrives with a generic binary type; this behavior does not replace appropriate file validation or deployment-level restrictions.
Choose storage for the Paperclip deployment
Where attachments persist depends on the instance’s storage configuration. Paperclip’s storage configuration guide describes these deployment options:

Storage settings live in the instance configuration file, not in the database schema. If an attachment seems to disappear after a restart in a local or containerized installation, check whether the storage directory is on a persistent volume or bind mount.
Issue attachments versus company image uploads
The Paperclip CLI documents paperclipai asset image:upload for company images and paperclipai asset logo:upload for a company logo. These commands upload company assets, not issue attachments. Use the issue-scoped API endpoint above for attaching a file to an issue; the CLI’s asset commands do not establish a CLI workflow for issue attachments.
