PDF export is typically built from a Drupal module and a rendering library—or, in some setups, a separately installed executable. Start by checking your Drupal core version, then choose a path that fits the document’s HTML/CSS, font and language requirements, and your server’s deployment constraints.
Choose the Drupal module and renderer together
A Drupal module supplies the integration or authoring controls; the renderer produces the PDF. Those are related but separate choices. A module’s compatibility does not by itself establish that a particular rendering engine, stylesheet, or deployment setup will work for your site.
For Drupal 10 or 11, Drupal.org describes PDF using mPDF as an HTML-to-PDF module, with its 3.x branch described as compatible with those core versions. For a developer building PDF creation into a custom module, the TCPDF integration lists Drupal 9, 10, and 11 compatibility for its 2.x branch. Verify the exact release requirements and installation instructions on each project page before selecting a version.
Entity Print is another route for PDF export through print engines. The legacy Print project identifies Entity Print as its replacement, but Entity Print’s engine support is version-specific: its documentation says Dompdf is supported there only for Drupal 8, while its wkhtmltopdf setup requires an installed executable and a configured binary path. Check the documentation for the precise Entity Print release you intend to use rather than assuming an engine listed in older instructions remains available for your core version.

Match the route to your document and server
How closely must the PDF match your site?
If the PDF should resemble a rendered Drupal page, prioritize a route that converts HTML and test it with the actual templates and CSS used for export. A module’s ability to accept HTML does not guarantee that every browser-oriented CSS rule will render identically in a PDF. If the document is generated from application data with tightly controlled structure, a developer-focused API may offer a more suitable integration approach.
What layout, fonts, and languages do you need?
Make a representative test document before committing to an engine. Include the longest tables, page breaks, headers and footers, special characters, and any required scripts or font files. Verify the rendered output rather than assuming that fonts or complex page layouts will behave like they do in a browser. The project descriptions do not establish a universal fidelity ranking.

What can your deployment support?
Check whether your environment can install and maintain a Composer-managed PHP library or whether a separate executable is acceptable. For executable-based rendering, account for the operating system, binary installation and configured path, as well as your organization’s dependency and security policies. For either approach, test in the same deployment environment used for production.
Do editors need controls or do developers need an API?
PDF using mPDF’s project page lists features such as custom CSS and templates, headers and footers, watermarks, password protection, and controls by content type. Treat these as features listed by the module project, not as a guarantee that every option is present or configured identically in every release; confirm them in the documentation for the version you install. TCPDF is presented for module developers, so do not assume its integration is a ready-made editorial interface.

The PDF generator API is another building block: its project page says Printable uses it and lists a stable release compatible with Drupal 8.8 through 11. That makes it relevant when evaluating an API or another module’s dependency, but does not by itself mean it provides a complete editor-facing PDF workflow.
Verify compatibility and install from current instructions
- Identify your Drupal core version. Use the module’s current project page to confirm that the specific release you plan to install supports your core version.
- Choose the workflow. Decide whether you need HTML-to-PDF export, engine-based printing, or a developer API for custom generation.
- Read both sets of requirements. Follow the selected Drupal module’s installation instructions and the renderer’s own requirements. Do not copy dependency paths or version advice from old Print documentation into a current deployment.
- Install and configure the selected release. Use its current Composer guidance where applicable; for wkhtmltopdf with Entity Print, install the executable and configure its binary location as required by the matching engine documentation.
- Test a representative document in the target environment. Inspect page breaks, fonts, special characters, headers, footers, and any access or content-type controls your workflow needs.
- Recheck project status when upgrading. Compatibility, maintenance labels, and releases can change; consult the linked project page before changing Drupal core or renderer versions.
What the published project information does—and does not—establish
Drupal.org’s PDF using mPDF page describes the module as: “Convert HTML pages to PDF documents using mPDF Library.” The TCPDF project describes its module as offering a way to create PDF documents with Drupal and TCPDF, and presents module developers as its target audience. These descriptions clarify intended use; they are not independent comparative tests.

The project pages do not provide a controlled comparison that establishes one option as universally fastest, most faithful, or best for every Drupal site. Select based on the current core compatibility, document requirements, and what your deployment can support, then validate the actual output in your own environment.
