Separately, the “Run as 32-bit process on 64-bit clients” option controls the execution view used by a deployment command or custom detection script. It does not select or convert the software’s 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
SCCM package vs. application: what is the difference?
A package defines one or more programs to run. An application requires at least one deployment type, and its deployment tells the Configuration Manager client how and when to install or uninstall the software. Applications also support controls such as detection, requirements, dependencies, and deployment simulation. See Microsoft’s packages and programs documentation and application deployment documentation.
| If you need to… | Start with… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Run a defined command or administrative task | Package and program | Programs capture command-execution behavior and requirements. |
| Install software with detection, applicability rules, dependencies, or managed uninstall and repair behavior | Application | Deployment types and application deployment settings provide those controls. |
| Check whether a required deployment applies without installing it | Application simulation | Simulation evaluates applicability, including detection, requirements, and dependencies. Microsoft says required application deployments can be simulated; packages cannot. |
Use the model that supplies the controls your task needs. A package is not simply a 32-bit or legacy form of an application; the distinction is the deployment and lifecycle model.
What does “run as 32-bit process on 64-bit clients” mean?
The option makes the deployment command or custom detection script run with a 32-bit process view on a 64-bit Windows client. That view affects which file-system and registry locations the process sees. It does not change the installer’s own architecture: selecting 32-bit context does not turn a 64-bit installer into a 32-bit installer or determine which product version it installs.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
On 64-bit Windows, 64-bit applications typically install under Program Files, while 32-bit applications typically use Program Files (x86). Microsoft’s MDT guidance describes this path distinction. An installer or script that checks a path or registry location must use the view that matches where the software writes its data.
Should you use 32-bit context for installation or detection?
For the install or uninstall command
Enable 32-bit execution when the command needs the 32-bit file-system or registry view. Use native 64-bit execution when it needs the 64-bit view. Check the vendor’s installer instructions and verify the actual behavior; the setting is about the process view, not a universal rule about which context every installer needs.

For custom detection
Consider detection separately from installation. Configuration Manager provides a distinct setting for running custom detection scripts as 32-bit processes on 64-bit clients. Align the script’s context with the location or registry data it checks. Do not assume that a correct install context automatically makes a custom detection method correct.
For validation
- Review the vendor’s instructions and identify where the installer writes its files and registry data.
- Set the deployment command’s process context to match the view it needs.
- Configure custom detection independently, so it checks the correct location in the correct view.
- Test installation, detection, and uninstall on a representative 64-bit client before deploying broadly.
Microsoft documents the execution and detection controls in the ConfigurationManager PowerShell reference. Check the reference for the ConfigurationManager module version you use if configuring deployment types through PowerShell.

How do application deployments affect user experience and safety?
An application deployment can be Available, letting users install it on demand, or Required, directing automatic installation according to the deployment’s settings. Applications also provide a simulation option for evaluating a required deployment without carrying out the installation.
Pay attention to installation behavior and user interaction when configuring an application. Microsoft warns in its application authoring documentation: “Installing in system context and allowing users to interact with the installation isn’t a secure configuration.”
