You can add an email countdown without writing code by choosing a deadline, using your email platform’s timer block or a third-party timer generator, inserting the provided content, and testing the message. The exact steps depend on your email service provider (ESP), and a timer may not update or display identically in every inbox.
Step 1: Set the deadline and timezone
Decide when the offer or event actually ends before you create the timer. Use the same deadline in the email copy, timer, and destination page so readers do not encounter conflicting information. Check which timezone the timer uses and make sure it is the one you intend to communicate.
For example, Omnisend’s native countdown block uses the timezone configured in Store settings and applies one fixed end date and time to all recipients. It does not calculate a separate deadline from each person’s send or open time. Omnisend documents these native timer settings.
Step 2: Choose a native timer or a generator
Check your email editor and plan before choosing a setup route. Some platforms provide a built-in countdown block; others require content made by a third-party timer service. Feature availability can change, so verify current eligibility in your account before building the campaign.

| Third-party generator | Klaviyo documents a workflow using a third-party generator such as MailTimers: create the timer, copy its embed code, add an HTML block, and paste the code. Choose a native block for a simpler editor-based setup when its fixed deadline and plan requirements fit your campaign. Consider a generator when your platform lacks a native option or you need a feature such as personalized deadlines, but check the provider’s current controls and expiration options. The documentation cited here does not establish a universally best provider.
Step 3: Add the timer to the email
With a native Omnisend timer
In Omnisend’s Email Builder, add the countdown timer block, configure its deadline and appearance, and set the expired-state fallback if appropriate. The precise interface may change; follow the current block controls in your account. See Omnisend’s countdown setup instructions.

With a third-party timer in Klaviyo
- Open a timer generator and create a countdown with the intended date, time, timezone, and style.
- Copy the embed code the generator provides for email use.
- In the Klaviyo email editor, add an HTML block and paste the code into it.
- Save the message and preview it before sending. Klaviyo’s example workflow is documented in its countdown-timer instructions.
With custom HTML in Omnisend
Omnisend documents adding a custom third-party timer through an HTML item in the email builder. Use the generator’s email-specific embed or image content, not a web-page script copied at random: email clients and editors do not support every web technology. Omnisend explains how to add and configure a custom HTML item.
The block name and insertion path differ by platform. A timer that looks live in the editor is not proof that it will animate or keep accurate time in every recipient’s inbox.

Step 4: Test rendering and what happens at expiry
Send a test to the inboxes and devices your audience actually uses. Check the timer’s appearance, whether images load, whether any linked call to action reaches the right page, and what recipients see after the deadline passes.
- Confirm the displayed deadline and timezone agree with the offer copy and destination page.
- Inspect the email in relevant clients. Klaviyo specifically warns about Apple Mail preloading and older Outlook versions displaying only the first GIF frame; these examples show why client behavior should not be assumed to be universal. See Klaviyo’s documented compatibility cautions.
- Check the message with images disabled or delayed, so the email remains understandable if the timer image does not appear immediately.
- Verify the expired state. Omnisend documents a fallback image for its native timer; if your setup has no equivalent, make sure the email does not leave a stale offer or misleading countdown as its only message. See Omnisend’s fallback-image details.
Do not treat a countdown as a guarantee of identical real-time behavior across email clients. Its display depends on the platform, timer configuration, image loading, and the recipient’s inbox.
