There is no evidence-based ranking of the eight most-used Android Studio plugins. This shortlist instead matches useful options to specific needs—from Git visibility and keyboard habits to cross-platform projects and learning—and explains what to verify before installing them.

Android Studio is Google’s official IDE for Android development and is based on IntelliJ IDEA. Kotlin support is already included: the Kotlin plugin ships with every Android Studio release, so it is not an optional plugin you need to add. Kotlin’s Android overview explains the relationship.

How to choose an Android Studio plugin

Start with a task you want to improve, rather than installing a long list because it appears in a roundup. Plugins can add visual cues, expose Git information, change how you edit, or support a particular project type. A theme changes appearance; a learning plugin serves a different purpose from a development tool.

Compatibility is version-specific. Rainbow Brackets and Kotlin Multiplatform are explicitly described as supporting Android Studio in their current Marketplace results. For the other recommendations below, the cited descriptions do not establish compatibility with every current Android Studio release. Check the plugin’s Marketplace listing against your installed IDE version before installing it.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

8 plugins to consider by workflow

1. Rainbow Brackets: see code structure

Rainbow Brackets colors matching brackets and adds visual cues that can help distinguish nested blocks. It is worth considering if you often trace deeply nested code or lose track of matching delimiters. The Marketplace identifies Android Studio as compatible. Some features require a paid subscription, so check the listing for current feature access and terms rather than assuming every feature is free. Rainbow Brackets on JetBrains Marketplace.

2. GitToolBox: see Git status and inline blame

GitToolBox is aimed at developers who want Git information closer to the code they are editing. JetBrains’ description reports features including inline blame, status display, automatic fetching, and notifications when a branch is behind. These are reported plugin features, not a guarantee that every feature or behavior is available in every Android Studio version. Check the current Marketplace listing for compatibility and its freemium terms. GitToolBox on JetBrains Marketplace.

Rank #2
Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

3. Key Promoter X: learn IDE shortcuts

Key Promoter X displays shortcut prompts when you use IDE buttons. It may help if you want to learn keyboard equivalents for actions you currently perform with the mouse; it does not guarantee faster work. Confirm that the listing supports your Android Studio release before installing. Key Promoter X on JetBrains Marketplace.

4. IdeaVim: use Vim-style editing

IdeaVim emulates Vim in JetBrains IDEs. Consider it if you already prefer Vim motions or want to learn that editing style. It changes the way you interact with the editor, so it is not a universal improvement or a necessary Android development tool. Check the Marketplace entry for compatibility with your IDE version. 5. Kotlin Multiplatform: work across targets

This is a specialized choice for Kotlin Multiplatform projects, not a default requirement for Android-only apps. The Marketplace says the plugin supports Android Studio and IntelliJ IDEA and enables development for Android, iOS, desktop, web, and server targets. Recheck the current listing for compatibility and project details before adding it. Kotlin Multiplatform on JetBrains Marketplace.

6. One Dark Theme: change the editor’s appearance

One Dark Theme provides an alternative editor theme. Choose it for personal readability or preference, not for Android-specific development features. A JetBrains roundup included it among plugins for IntelliJ-based IDEs, but that does not establish current Android Studio compatibility; verify the Marketplace listing for your version. The cited description does not establish current Android Studio compatibility, so check the Marketplace listing before relying on it. .env files support on JetBrains Marketplace.

8. EduTools: learn or teach programming

EduTools has been described as bringing programming courses and exercises into the IDE. It may suit learners who want guided exercises or educators building an in-IDE learning workflow. The description comes from JetBrains’ 2021 roundup and does not establish current Android Studio compatibility; verify availability and compatibility in the Marketplace before installing. Install, disable, or remove a plugin

JetBrains’ IntelliJ IDEA documentation describes the general plugin workflow. Android Studio is based on IntelliJ IDEA, but exact labels or steps can vary by Android Studio release.

  1. Open the IDE’s settings or preferences and select Plugins.
  2. Open the Marketplace tab, search for the plugin, and open its listing.
  3. Check the listing’s supported IDE versions, dependencies, features, and current pricing or subscription terms.
  4. Select Install and follow any prompt to restart the IDE.
  5. To stop using a plugin, return to Plugins and disable or uninstall it. Review plugins you no longer need; JetBrains notes that disabling unnecessary plugins can improve performance.

See JetBrains’ plugin-management documentation for the IntelliJ IDEA workflow.

Which one should you try first?

  • For clearer bracket matching, consider Rainbow Brackets.
  • For Git information in the editor, investigate GitToolBox.
  • To learn keyboard alternatives to mouse actions, try Key Promoter X.
  • For Vim-style editing or a Kotlin Multiplatform project, choose IdeaVim or Kotlin Multiplatform only if that workflow fits you.
  • For appearance, environment-file configuration, or guided learning, evaluate One Dark Theme, .env files support, or EduTools—and verify compatibility especially carefully.

These are workflow-based suggestions, not a measured popularity ranking. JetBrains’ plugin roundups cover IntelliJ-based IDEs rather than Android Studio-specific usage, and Marketplace result order does not establish a ranking by current Android Studio downloads or ratings.
