The Sonos Ace Ultra is a compelling premium headphone even if you never connect it to a Sonos system: T3’s reviewer praised its sound, noise cancellation, comfort and battery life during two weeks of use. Its defining upgrade is Headphone Linking, which can move audio between the headphones and compatible Sonos speakers over Wi-Fi. That feature gives the Ace Ultra a more useful place in a Sonos home, but it is in Early Access, and the headphones cannot join a Sonos speaker group.

What is new about the Sonos Ace Ultra?

Ace Ultra is a new second-generation headphone, not a software update to the original Sonos Ace. Sonos announced it on 1 September 2026 with a redesigned Sonos-engineered 40 mm driver and Adaptive ANC using ten microphones. The company says its Headphone Engine 2 supports direct linking to a Sonos system, including playback handover without a phone in range. Sonos describes Headphone Linking as Early Access, so feature availability and compatibility may change.

Sonos also says the headphones offer customizable 3-band and 8-band EQ and Adaptive EQ, which measures the ear-cup seal and adjusts sound. These are manufacturer-described features, not independent test findings. Sonos’s announcement outlines the product and its system-linking feature.

How Headphone Linking differs from TV Audio Swap

The two Sonos handover features serve different purposes. Headphone Linking moves system audio between Ace Ultra and compatible Sonos speakers over Wi-Fi. TV Audio Swap transfers TV audio from a compatible Sonos soundbar to the headphones. Neither feature is required for ordinary Bluetooth listening.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Headphone Linking: Connects the headphones with compatible Sonos speakers on a Wi-Fi network, so playback can move between them. Sonos requires compatible hardware and setup through its app; it currently labels the feature Early Access.
  • TV Audio Swap: Sends audio from a compatible Sonos soundbar to the headphones, useful when you want to keep watching without playing sound aloud.

Sonos’s Headphone Linking guide covers setup and compatibility. What Hi-Fi? tested the handover with a Beam (Gen 2), reporting that it required the Sonos app and the same network; in its test, a roughly five-second button hold initiated the transfer. That account describes one reviewer’s setup, not a universal timing guarantee.

How the Ace Ultra performed in review

T3’s Mike Lowe tested the headphones for two weeks at home on a Sonos network and away from home, including on walks, public transport and a long-haul flight. His overall verdict was strongly positive: he found the sound, ANC, comfort and battery life highly competitive, and considered system linking a meaningful addition. Those are review judgments and observations, rather than controlled measurements.

Comfort and everyday use

Lowe reports a weight of 322 g and says he wore the headphones on a 15-hour flight, finding them very comfortable. That is useful real-world context, but it is one person’s experience rather than a standardized comfort test. He also found the case zipper finicky.

Sound and noise cancellation

Sonos specifies Adaptive ANC with ten microphones and a 40 mm driver. T3’s reviewer praised both sound and noise cancellation. What Hi-Fi? places more emphasis on differences in listening preference, so prospective buyers should treat sound quality as something to assess for themselves rather than assume every reviewer will hear the same strengths. What Hi-Fi? also reports Dolby Atmos spatial audio with head tracking on services including Tidal, Amazon Music and Apple.

Battery life

Sonos claims up to 35 hours of playback with ANC on. This is a manufacturer maximum, not an independently verified runtime measurement in the cited review coverage. Sonos says three minutes of charging can provide up to three hours of playback with ANC on, and that a power-saver mode can extend remaining battery by strategically disabling features. See the Sonos Ace support guide for the company’s feature and care information.

Setup and system limitations

Lowe encountered trouble during his initial pre-release Headphone Linking setup. After resetting the headphones and switching from Android to iOS, he got it working; a colleague’s setup worked immediately. In his everyday use, handover took a few seconds. He also found the app integration could be deeper and that the headphones could not participate in a Sonos group. These are his observations, not a promise that every setup will behave the same way.

Can you use Ace Ultra without Sonos speakers?

Yes. Sonos ownership is not a prerequisite for basic headphone use: Ace Ultra can be used as Bluetooth headphones away from home or without a Sonos system. Its most distinctive home features—Headphone Linking and TV Audio Swap—depend on compatible Sonos equipment, Wi-Fi and setup. Tom’s Guide lists Bluetooth 6.0, Wi-Fi, USB-C audio, a 3.5 mm input, multipoint, wear detection and SBC/AAC/aptX Adaptive Lossless codec support in its reported specifications. Those details are that outlet’s spec-sheet reporting; check current Sonos documentation for the configuration you plan to use.

Price, availability and care

T3 lists launch prices of £399, $449, €449 and AU$699, with sales beginning 29 September 2026. These are regional launch prices, not a guarantee of current pricing or stock. T3 lists Black, Soft White, Agave and Sand as the available colors. The Sonos product page showed ₹44,999 in India when accessed; that regional page price is time-sensitive. Check the live price and availability in your market. Sonos’s India product page is the relevant regional listing.

Sonos says the battery is replaceable by a skilled operator and the vegan-leather ear cushions can be swapped when worn. That does not establish that the battery is user-repairable, specify repair costs or verify third-party replacement parts.

Should you buy the Sonos Ace Ultra?

Ace Ultra makes the clearest case for a buyer who wants a strong standalone premium headphone and will also use Sonos speakers or a compatible soundbar at home. T3’s positive assessment of core performance means its appeal is not confined to the ecosystem, while Headphone Linking adds a useful option for Sonos households. The qualifications are equally practical: linking is Early Access, setup may take some troubleshooting, the headphones cannot join a Sonos group, and the launch price puts them against capable rivals such as Sony’s WH-1000XM6. Choose on the merits of the headphones first; treat system handover as a bonus only if your Sonos equipment supports it.
