Build responsive card and page layouts without choosing a separate column count for every viewport: use CSS Grid’s intrinsic track sizing to let the available space and content determine the result. For repeated cards, a useful starting point is repeat(auto-fit, minmax(230px, 1fr)); treat 230px as an example minimum, not a universal breakpoint.
What CSS Grid does—and when to use it
CSS Grid is a two-dimensional layout system: it coordinates items across rows and columns. That makes it useful for major page regions and components whose horizontal and vertical relationships need to work together. Grid can also place items so they overlap. MDN describes these capabilities in its CSS Grid layout guide.
Flexbox is generally suited to arranging items along one direction at a time, while Grid is useful when a layout needs coordinated rows and columns. They are complementary tools, not competitors: a page can use Grid for its overall structure and Flexbox inside a component whose contents primarily flow in one direction. Make a card grid adapt to its container
For repeated items such as cards, let the browser fit as many columns as the available width allows, then share remaining space across them:

}minmax(230px, 1fr) gives each track a minimum size and allows it to grow. auto-fit repeats as many tracks as fit in the grid container; the remaining space is distributed across the tracks. The result responds to the container’s width rather than relying on a manually selected column count for each viewport. MDN demonstrates this pattern in its CSS Grid learning guide.
Choose the minimum from the content and the space the component actually receives. A card with a long heading or a wide image may need more room than a compact card. The 230px value above is an example, not a prescribed design threshold.

Let tracks grow when content needs room
Fixed track sizes can be brittle when text, translations, or other content grow: a fixed-height row may not have enough room. Use a minimum with an automatic maximum when the track should be allowed to expand. For example, minmax(100px, auto) sets a 100px minimum while allowing the track to grow to fit its content.
For rows created automatically, the same principle can be expressed with grid-auto-rows:

}Here, 50px is a minimum for automatically created rows, not a fixed height. MDN’s learning guide and Grid layout basic concepts explain flexible track sizing and show this kind of content-tolerant sizing.
Choose between nested grids and subgrid
A nested grid defines its own tracks. That is appropriate when the child component’s internal layout should be sized independently of the parent. But independently defined tracks do not automatically line up with tracks in the outer grid.

Use subgrid when a nested grid should use the parent’s row or column tracks—for example, when elements in several nested components need to align to shared columns. MDN explains track inheritance in its Subgrid guide.
MDN reports subgrid as widely available across browsers since September 2023. That is a broad baseline, not a guarantee for every browser or project configuration; verify support for the browsers and versions your users need.

Pick sizing and placement based on the layout
- Use Grid when row-and-column relationships, major page areas, or deliberate overlap matter.
- Use Flexbox when the items primarily need to flow along one direction; combine it with Grid when different parts of the design have different needs.
- Use
auto-fitwithminmax()when repeated items should fit the available container width without a separately hard-coded column count at every viewport. - Use content-tolerant track sizing when item or row content can grow beyond a nominal size.
- Use subgrid when nested content needs to align with tracks already defined by its parent; use an ordinary nested grid when it needs independent tracks.
These are choices based on layout intent, not rules that make one CSS layout system universally superior. MDN describes combining Grid and Flexbox as useful for responsive, flexible layouts in its Grid layout basic concepts.
Check support for the features you use
Compatibility depends on the specific feature and syntax, not just whether a browser supports Grid in general. MDN reports the grid shorthand as widely available since October 2017, while noting that not every part of the latest syntax is implemented in all browsers. Check the relevant feature against your project’s actual browser requirements in MDN’s grid reference.
